The Sungazers have been busy celebrating and learning about St. Andrews Day. We enjoyed a Scottish food tasting session where we tried Porridge, Tattie scones, Shortbread & Irn Bru, and shared our opinions with each other. We had some strong favourites within the class & some foods that we disliked too. I’m sure you will be able to tell from our photos which ones we liked/disliked!
The Asteroids have been successful learners finding out about the life of St. Andrew.
We showed great confidence celebrating Scotland by taking part in different Scottish activities.
We learned about the Scottish flag and the sign for Scotland/Scottish and made our very own saltire using tissue paper. We used this knowledge to hunt for Scottish food produce. When we found the foods with the Scottish flag, we had our own wee Scottish snack. We were very confident and tried some food we’d never had before – well done!
We also enjoyed listening to Scottish music and ‘burlin’ each other around when we did some ceilidh dancing. We also took part in singing/signing some Scottish songs – some words were funny!
The Daisies have enjoyed learning about St Andrews Day. We have been successful learners listening to Scottish music and using a talker to select what instrument we think we heard. Some of the children even tried some Scottish dancing. We were responsible citizens working together to find visuals and match them to a picture on our St Andrews treasure hunt. We made the national flower of Scotland during art – thistles. We finished the day with following a recipe to make porridge for our afternoon snack and loved choosing our own tasty toppings.

The Snowdrops have enjoyed learning about the story of St Andrew and creating lots of lovely Scottish crafts. We made Scottish flags by tearing, scrunching and sticking white and blue tissue paper onto our templates.
We also had great fun dipping toy cars into different coloured paints and rolling them in different directions to create our own tartan pictures!
There was a hive of activity in the Transition class when everyone was working on their ILP targets and showing that they were Successful Learners. We had a group setting the clock to show when programmes start on the BBC. Mr Nicoll thought he could pick awkward times but everyone successfully demonstrated them on their clock faces. We had success with lace tying, fine motor skills and writing motor skills. We even had some great vocalisation from our resident Tenor. Well done everyone, a superb effort by all.
It was Potato Salad Take 2 this week, as the second group had their opportunity to cook. Skills on show were, research before cooking, microwaving, cutting and mixing as they made potato salad with low-fat, free from mayonnaise. A tasty treat was the payoff for such hard work.
For our writing skills activity this week we thought we’d get a head start on St Andrew’s Day. The class were Successful Learners when competing their shape skills and addition skills with a Scottish twist.
This week we have had lots of fun exploring letters and sounds. We have been doing lots of “n” crafts this week. We stuck lots of numbers in a big N and made a nurse. They enjoyed using crayons to give her hair, eyes and a mouth. We also enjoyed completing various letter jigsaws and playing a fishing game catching letters with the magnetic rod.

The Stars class have created wonderful craft work to decorate the Willowbank atrium. We have made a colourful snowman wall display and lampshade angel. We have also decorated a wooden snowman as directed by the Transition class. We made tasty cheese and ham toasties at HE and learnt how to make an egg float at science time. We have also been practising hard for the Willowbank virtual Christmas showcase but these photo’s are ‘secret’ for the moment!
