Science Week Dinosaur Shadows

The Daises are enjoying this terms theme all about dinosaurs. We have been exploring how shadows are created. We used a torch to shine on a variety of different types of dinosaur to see how their shadows look. Some of the boys loved experimenting with the direction of the light to show how the shadows changed. They moved the torch closer and further away from the dinosaur and we saw how the shadows shrunk and grew.

Confident Individuals – SQA Cooking

There was a lot of focus in the cookery room this week. The Transition class were Confident Individuals when they tried to make the neatest sandwich. The class worked on their motor skills by spreading, slicing, grating, squeezing and finally cutting before enjoying a cheese and ham sandwich. The sandwiches would be too dry on their own, cups of tea had to be made!

Effective Contributors – African Safari Yoga

During our Health and Wellbeing time the Transition class took the time to take a break from Science Week prep. We took part in an African Safari Yoga. Everyone used their special binoculars to look at their class mates doing a yoga pose. They had to guess which part of our safari it represented. We had lions, zebra, snakes, elephants and mountains to name a few.

Stars New Dinosaur Theme

*Successful Learners        *Effective Contributors

We started our dinosaur theme by creating handprint dinosaur pictures for our wall display. At science, we did a floating dinosaur experiment where we saved the dinosaur by adding stones to the jug to raise the water level by displacement. We had fun lighting up glow dinosaurs with a torch and making dinosaur shadows. Mrs Gilchrist used a ‘green’ screen for pupils to act out being a dinosaur and superimposed this on to their chosen background. This was a very exciting use of technology. We used a switch to activate the microwave where we made yummy ‘smores’ by melting marshmallows.

IDL/THEME – THE ICE AGES

*Successful Learners* *Effective Contributors*

As part of our new topic ‘The Ice Ages’ we have been looking at different animals that are now extinct. We worked in pairs to research four different animals and then presented the information back to our peers. This was also a good way to practice our listening and talking skills in a group.

We then had some sensory fun to create a piece of art work with coloured ice cubes.
