Reading Awards 📚

This week saw the first winners of our new Reading Certificates at assembly. These are being awarded to someone who has completed Bug Club questions to a high standard either at home or in school. This is part of our Reading Schools accreditation process, so congratulations to this group – who will it be next week…?

Book Fair Rewards

Following on from the success of the school Book Fair, we thought you would like to see all the fabulous books we have been able to buy through the rewards system.

Thanks again for your amazing response – what a lot of lovely new resources we have for across the whole school!

The Masked Reader has been such a popular daily puzzle this week as well – we hope you’ve been playing along at home too!

Please enjoy looking at some of our photos from today. More to follow ……

Writing Competition

To promote writing and celebrate the great work being created in Gargieston and across the SWEIC (South West Education Improvement Collaborative), entries are invited for a writing competition. Alongside prizes for the winners and runners-up in each category, pupils will have their writing shared on the SWEIC blog.

The theme of the competition is ‘The Gift’ and work submitted can be linked to this idea in any way. You may wish to link it to Christmas, but you might also want to think about the idea of gifts and giving in a different way.

Early Years’ Entries Pupils can share their mark-making or dictated ideas. Entries should be within one A4 page and may be pictures, photographs or in any other appropriate form.

P1-3 Entries Entries can take any form that they choose. The entry must be no longer than one side of A4 and can be illustrated. Typed or handwritten entries will be accepted.

P4-7 Entries Entries from this age group should be broadly creative: poetry, story or drama. They may be up to two sides of A4 and can include illustrations.

We know how many talented writers we have in school and would love to see as many entries from Gargieston as possible.

Please email or hand entries to Mrs Lawson no later than Monday 13th December

‘Letters To My Teacher’ writing competition P4-7

An interesting writing competition has come into the school which may be of interest to P4-7s with a love of history.

Poppy Scotland has given the competition the title Letters To My Teacher:

Imagine you are a soldier or stationed in a Field Hospital in the trenches during WW1. Write a letter back to your teacher describing your experiences, hopes and fears.

Good luck with your entries; please let Mrs Lawson know if you decide to enter. More details can be found on the following link:

Book Titles

At school we often get asked for suggestions of good authors or book titles, so I thought I’d draw your attention to this website. Every month a book is chosen as ‘Book of the Month’ and some may be of interest to you. This is the link for September, a book set in WW1, and includes an interview with the author and what inspires her writing.
This term, we have a focus on Writing in school and often see the best readers are the best writers too, so we hope this will be of interest to many of you.

Captain Conker Visit

Follow the link below to see some fantastic footage of Captain Conker’s visit to Gargieston last week to launch his writing competition with Kilmarnock FC and Nae Bother books 🙂
