Port Ellen Primary 3&4 and 6&7 have been learning about India. In the topic we have had Glow Meets with teachers and students at Arwachin Bharti Bhawan School in Delhi in India. We got the chance to ask them questions about life in India. It was surprising that we have so much in common; they like TV like The Simpsons and Family Guy, music like Taylor Swift and films like James Bond, and their English was much better than our Hindi! We wanted to look at the differences in the festivals we celebrate. Continue reading INDIA CONNECTIONS

‘Message in a Bottle’
Primary 4 at Dunoon Primary could not believe their eyes when Jake a member of their class came into school carrying a bottle with a message inside, because they had been discussing messages in bottles in class. At first they thought Jake was playing a joke. The bottle had to be cut open to get the message out and to everyones surprise it really was a message in a bottle! It had come from a P4/5 class in Gourock and even more surprisingly they had been studying weather just as Primary 4 had! Continue reading ‘Message in a Bottle’
St. Joseph’s Help Clean up the Local Community!
The children of St. Joseph’s Eco Committee were out in force last week assisting the community by helping to make the streets a little more clean. They donned the relevant protective clothing and litter pickers and went off in search of their target….LITTER! The area of Kirkmichael benefited greatly with the children returning with happy smiles and reporting they’d cleaned up the area! En route the children and staff were met with some very happy residents who came out of their houses to say thanks!….That made the children smile even more!

Very exciting day at Kilmartin P.S. Here’s what Rowan in P.7 says:
Today, 29th May, our class were invited through to the nursery by Mrs MacCallum to have a look at the amazing newborn chicks. Fortunately, we managed to go through just in time as we were able to watch the fourth chick hatch. The eggs have been in the incubator for 21 days, meaning that they were put in on the 9th of May.
Car Boot Sale at Dalmally Mart
“Dalmally, Taynuilt and Kilchrenan Primary Schools held a wonderful Car Boot Sale on Saturday at Dalmally Mart, raising over £1118 for their annual p6/7 trip to Lcohgoilhead. The sun shone on the ‘car boots’ and the stalls (causing some of the icing to slip off the cakes on the baking stall!) and a great time was had by all. The local fire brigade came along to help with the Car Wash, there was a Bottle Stall, Raffle and Baking stall as well as activities such as ‘Throw the Wet Sponge’ and a Duck Race.”

Well done to the football teams from St. Joseph’s, Hermitage, Cardross and Rhu for their efforts in the Challenge Cup competition. St. Joseph’s ran out worthy winners in the end and a great day was enjoyed by everyone involved. Thanks to the teachers and helpers for organising the teams and thanks to all the parents who turned up to cheer on the children. We are hoping to run the competition again next year and welcome any more schools from the area who wish to enter.

Well done girls and boys!!
Glassary Primary Sponsored Cycle
Children, staff and parents from Glassary Primary School took part in a 10 mile sponsored cycle in Kilmichael Glen. The cycle was to raise money for the Lauren Currie Foundation who fund research into Vasculitis, a lung disease which affects a relative of a child in the school. After the cycle the whole school community had a soup and sandwich picnic in the sunshine. The soup had been made by the children from the school the day before. A great day out!

JUNIOR SALTIRE AWARDS FINALISTS
Primary 6/7 at Port Ellen were learning about renewable energy and wave power and decided that we would make wave power devices for the Junior Saltire Awards. These awards are open to schools around Scotland who want to design and build their own wave powered electricity generating devices. As we already have lots of Marine renewables on Islay, with the Limpet in Portnahaven and the new tidal generator planned for the sound of Jura, we thought we should have a go.
St Joseph’s lift the Challenge Cup!
Excitement ran high on Thursday 24 May when a number of local schools put forward a team to play for the local ‘Challenge Cup’ with the P6 & P7 boys of St. Joseph’s Primary School bringing home the trophy. Ulva School make Flowers in the Forest
The children and staff from Ulva Primary School had a brilliant time making big flowers and ‘planting’ them in the woodland at Calgary Art in Nature.
We were pleased to see the sun was shining on Friday as we headed off to Calgary with our waterproofs packed in our bags. When we arrived we met Symon and Kim from Vision Mechanics who were going to show us how to make the flowers. We had a lovely walk around the woodland looking at the Giant Heads and the other sculptures in the Forest.
Samba at St. Joseph’s
Friday 17 May was a fantastic day at St. Joseph’s with P6 having their first of three lessons on ‘Samba Drumming’. So good was P6 on their first day of lessons that Ms England (drumming teacher) commented on the speed of their progress. It was such a beautiful day that Ms England took the children outside to practise their drumming. That, in turn, brought out the whole school as Ms Collins invited everyone to enjoy the session and join in with some dancing.

iCycle training at St Joseph’s Primary
Parents are leading the way at St. Joseph’s in iCycle training. A group of parents: Mrs O’Hara, Mrs Russell, Mrs Moy and Mrs Greig have been involved in ably instructing the P6 children in the practical aspects of the programme whilst staff have looked on and learned. The teaching staff have approached the theory of iCycle training in class sessions with a fine balance of practical skills being taught mainly by previously trained parents.
Victoria Postcard Project
This project is part of the Rothesay Town Heritage Initiative, celebrating Rothesay’s Victorian past. Argyll and Bute Primary children from Kilmodan, St Mun’s, Toward, North Bute and St Andrew’s have already been participating during May. This has involved interdisciplinary activities such as using traditional, Victorian style dip pens and ink, drawing and writing postcards, and, some ‘pop up history’ from a Victorian visitor from Rothesay in the year 1887.
