The Giant Egg Discovery

THE GIANT EGG INVESTIGATION

P1 and P2 at Rhu made an ‘eggxciting’ discovery in the playground earlier this term. Imagine our surprise when we found a giant nest with an enormous egg inside! On researching eggs, taking advice from our resident palaeontologist, dissecting droppings and reading lots of books, we thought it could be a dinosaur.

‘Father of the iPod’ surprises DGS Pupils with Words of Support

A class of S3 Business pupils at Dunoon Grammar school received a pleasant surprise last week when Tony Fadell – dubbed the Father of the iPod – tweeted words of encouragement for a learning experience the pupils were working on.

The pupils studying Business were working on a creative team exercise – tasked to rebrand Apple’s iconic iPod and devise an effective marketing-mix to breathe new life into the flagging sales of the once all conquering multimedia player.

P4/5 Football Tournment

On Friday 10th March Strachur Primary participated in a football tournament organised by Active Schools, at Strachurmore Pitch. Primary 4 and 5 pupils took part from 10am until 2pm and played really well. All the small schools from the Cowal area were invited and Strachur came second, Tighnabruaich Primary won the tournament.

Kirn’s P6 Digital Leaders click with Cowal Elderly Befrienders

The Digital Leaders from Kirn’s Primary 6 spent a morning being teachers for members of our community who felt they wanted to come back to school and find out more about the online world.

Using the school iPads P6 pupils began with the basics – turning the iPads on and and finding out what an app is. Then they were off! Soon holidays were being browsed and online shopping was being investigated.

Fourth Green Flag for Dalintober Primary

Dalintober Primary School are delighted to have been awarded a fourth Green Flag from Keep Scotland Beautiful as part of the Eco School programme of study.
Our photograph shows the Eco Committee displaying the Green Flag in our school grounds.
Our next steps include creating a new Action Plan, organising a Green Day and investigating new ways to explore the Eco principles within our curriculum.

Junior Chef training at the Isle of Coll Hotel

Arinagour Primary Schools P4, P6 and P7 pupils enjoyed four trips to the Coll Hotel to participate in Junior Chef training sessions.

With the guidance of owner and chef Julie Oliphant, chef Graham Griffiths and hotel manager Laura Oliphant the pupils developed skills in food preparation. They identified ingredients, units of measure and equipment used in the cooking process.

They also learned about cleanliness, hygiene and safety

P1 and P2 pupils joined the senior pupils as guests to sample the meals that had been prepared.

St Andrew’s Primary Eco Schools Green Flag Award

Eco-Schools is the largest sustainable schools programme in the world and is designed to encourage whole-school action on sustainable development education issues. The Green Flag Award is an internationally-recognised symbol of excellence in sustainable development education.

WHSmith donates book vouchers to help St. Columba’s Primary boost their library resources.
The store manager from WHSmith enjoyed a visit to St. Columba’s Primary recently as part of the WHSmith Trust’s Scottish ‘Encouraging Reading’ programme. As part of the ‘Encouraging Reading’ programme, the WHSmith Trust is donating vouchers to twenty four schools across Scotland to help boost the schools’ library with “Books for Reluctant Readers” for the new academic year.

Kirn’s P4 get Food for Thought at Season’s Cafe

kirn-p4-cafe-visitKirn Primary’s P4 class visited Seasons Café in Dunoon as part of their Food for Thought topic. The class were given a tour of the kitchen to see how food is prepared, investigated how the food is presented to customers, how the café is arranged and paid extra special interest to the décor as Kirn Primary have been asked to contribute ideas for the refurbishment of Dunoon’s historic Burgh Hall.
The children rounded off their visit with a delicious Italian biscotti – many thanks to Seasons Café.

Taynuilt Primary School Charles Rennie Mackintosh

taynuilt-charles-rennie-mackiintosh-project-dec-2016Taynuilt Primary 6 and 7 enjoyed a visit from Mr Bruce Jamieson of Greenspace. He came to discuss our recent project on Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Ms Burger hosted the event with a question and answer session followed by presentations by the children in pairs to Mr Jamieson. The children learned about the current renovation of a Mackintosh property in Helensburgh and were so interested in the project they have formed a School Trip Focus Group to plan and organise a visit to Helensburgh to both the new project and the Hill House. Kirn’s Christmas of Kindness

kirn-christmas-kindnessKirn Primary School have been in a whirl of activity lately, celebrating Christmas with our community. Our annual Community Tea with Christmas Concert for elderly members of our community was a great success. All our guests enjoyed their tea, scones and mince pies, served up by Primary 6 children while watching each class perform a beautiful Christmas song.

Kirn P3-2 visit Benmore Cafe : Food for Thought

kirn-benmore-cafe-1As part of our Food for Thought topic Primary 4/3 from Kirn Primary visited Benmore Cafe with Miss Campbell. We were allowed to go behind the counter and into the kitchens to see where all the delicious food is prepared. Then we sat in the cafe, looked at the menus and had our lunch. The lovely people at the Cafe gave us some tasters to experiment with different flavours.

5th Green Flag!

rhu-5th-green-flagRhu Primary School remain ‘Evergreen’, as we celebrate our 5th Green Flag. Christmas came early as the pupils received the joyous news. We were congratulated on our achievements in the topics of Biodiversity and Food in the Environment. We were also commended on our on-going beach cleans, which we have extended to the play park and Ardenconnel Woods. Eco Scotland were particularly impressed by our work on anti-dog fouling which was greatly appreciated by our local residents. The pupils are busily making plans to celebrate this great achievement in the New Year and we look forward to sharing this soon.

Tarbert Food Bank

tarbery-ac-food-bank-dec-2016This advent the children of Tarbert Academy have been encouraged to “think of others” by bringing food in for the Kintyre Food Bank. We did this because there are people around us who may not be able to afford a Christmas dinner.
