Oliver’ Performance at Park Primary

Staff, pupils, and parents were treated to a very enjoyable musical performance by Mrs Lind’s P5 class during their recent production of “Oliver’. The class had been studying ‘The Victorians’, and had spent several weeks working very hard to learn their songs and lines. Several children sang solo parts and were highly praised for their lovely singing voices – some stars of the future we think!

Owl Magic

On Wednesday the 7th May Sandbank Primary School, Nursery, Gaelic Medium Unit and Sgoil Araich were visited by Owl Magic from Kilmarnock. Nine different owls from all over the world spent the day with us, as each class learned about birds of prey and how to handle them carefully and safely. The owls ranged from a large eagle owl from Afghanistan called Bailey down to a pygmy owl called Titch.

National Fairtrade Snack Attack Competition 2014

Lismore Primary School children were delighted to hear that they have been awarded first place in the National Fairtrade Snack Attack Competition 2014. Schools from all over the United Kingdom and further afield competed to design a fun Fairtrade snack, together with its packaging, a marketing campaign and a report about their activities. Led by Classroom Assistant, Hazel MacCormick, the Lismore children worked together as a company, brainstorming and presenting ideas before splitting into groups to take on the different responsibilities of graphic design, marketing and logistics.

P2 Pupils from Castlehill visit local Co-op

Primary 2 from Castlehill Primary School enjoyed a visit from the Co-op who talked about the environment and Fairtrade Products and the children entered a Green schools Competition. Their Eco pictures were displayed in the foyer of the Co-op during the Easter holidays.
The children then visited the Co-op and would like to thank the staff for their kind donation of seeds and compost for their school garden and also for the Easter treats.

Garelochhead Primary, Helensburgh Art Club

All classes have participated in an Art Liaison with Helensburgh Art Club. P7/6 were fortunate to work alongside Mrs Mary Duncan, a retired Art Teacher, to make Panda Puppets to be used with script work. We also created a scroll to highlight the need to keep pandas in their natural habitats – bamboo heaven!

Rhu Primary School, Primary 3 ? Roman Day

Primary 3 in Rhu Primary School have been learning all about the Romans this term. They looked at the Roman Empire, how Rome was founded, what their lives were like and how they have influenced our lives today. As a celebration of their learning the children took part in a Roman Day. They dressed up as Romans, joined in with different games and activities, such as playing merels, making a bulla, making a scroll, designing a laurel leaf crown and even ate like Romans.

Rockfield Gaelic classes launch books

Before the Easter break, children in Rockfield’s Gaelic classes hosted an open afternoon to celebrate the launch of their very own books. The event was a really enjoyable way to end a very productive term and to involve parents, carers and peers in the children’s learning.
P2/1G based their books on their topic ‘Air an Tuathanas’ (On the Farm) and P4/3G created imaginative stories about ‘Na Lochlannaich’ (The Vikings). The children were really inspired by the book-writing project and produced some excellent work.

P2 Viking Open Afternoon

Primary Two at Rhu Primary recently held an Open Afternoon with parents, to celebrate the completion of their Viking topic. Pupils enjoyed showcasing their learning, which included literacy, art and technology work. They also displayed their musical talents, performing Thor the Thunderer and Odin’s Daughters! Parents joined in with various activities including food tasting, internet research, interactive games, map work and decoding Viking runes. It was a very exciting end to a very successful topic!

Sponsored cycle at Small Isles

In the Easter holidays almost all the children from Small Isles Primary on Jura took part in a sponsored cycle ride from Craighouse to Lagg. It’s a seven and a half mile cycle with some challenging hills, and everyone managed to do it, even our Primary One person. It took two hours for everyone to get there.

Rockfield’s Got Talent

Over the last eight weeks pupils of Rockfield Primary School have been organising a spectacular show. Primary7/6/5G and Primary 6 have put on an amazing school talent show for the community. The acts wowed the judges (Mr Degnan, Miss McKerrell and Mrs MacIntyre) with their huge amount of talent. We had a brilliant host from Oban High School and his name was Mr McKenna. We filled in application forms, stating which group we would like to be in.

Ardrishaig School Shout!

Lots of news from Ardrishaig Primary……….
Skipping for the British Heart Foundation
On Friday 21st March, staff and pupils took part in a sponsored skip-athon to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. Children had practised skipping as part of their P.E. lessons in the run up to the event and then took part in a variety of skipping events during the day itself, culminating in a whole school mass skip at lunchtime. Southend goes back in time

Pupils in the P5-7 class have been studying the Highland Clearances and Scottish Emigration through the novel, The Desperate Journey by Kathleen Fiddler. This inter-disciplinary project has brought together drama, art, music and literacy as well as learning about the lives of the Highland people 150 – 200 years ago. Model crofts were made of clay then thatched using dried grass and rashes from the fields.

In Primary Five at Kirn we have been reading ‘Really Weird Removals.com’ as our novel study this term, and have used the story as the inspiration for creating film adverts, life size characters, emails and much more. So, how exciting to be able to meet the author, Daniela Sacerdoti, in person in our own classroom!

The Luss Powan Blog

The children of Luss Primary School in class P5-7 have gone blogging mad!

They decided that this year they would write a blog, in order to detail the development of their very special powan fish eggs. This means that the local and wider community can follow the various steps involved in caring for this endangered ice age fish. The children are delighted, as their blog has had views from as far afield as the USA and Australia.

Visions, Values, Aims Day at Barcaldine PS

Barcaldine Primary School hosted a Visions, Values and Aims Day whilst tying it in with Fairtrade.
We invited parents and guardians of the children as well as members of the local community so that they could come together and discuss the visions, values and aims of Barcaldine Primary School. The children partnered up with adults and voiced their opinions alongside their parents. ‘The Viking’s Apprentice’ ~ AUTHOR VISIT

Kevin McLeod, author of The Viking’s Apprentice, paid a visit to Strath of Appin Primary School last week. The children have been reading his novel in class and were delighted when he agreed to visit the school to talk about his work. The children enjoyed a question and answer session with Kevin who then read some more of his story to the children. Three lucky pupils received special art work from Kevin’s second book and he kindly donated two copies of his book to the school library. The children are now eager to read the sequeal to The Viking’s Apprentice and find out how the plot develops in this fast-moving adventure story. Grandparents Tea Party at Kirn Primary

The P1 children were so excited to welcome Grannies and Grandas to their classrooms for a wonderful Tea Party this afternoon as part of their ‘Katie Morag’ topic.

Over 50 Grandparents were treated to some fabulous singing of well known Scottish Songs, including Ally Bally, Katie Bairdie and Ma Maw’s a Millionaire.

READATHON & WORLD BOOK DAY AT STRATH OF APPIN PRIMARY

Pupils and staff at Strath of Appin dressed in their pyjamas and brought in bedtime stories and cuddly toys to celebrate World Book Day. The classroom had a specially created ‘reading den’ and pupils brought in sleeping bags, cushions, pillows and beanbags. The day was filled with book-themed activities and quiet reading time. World Book Day at Kirn Primary

The children (and teachers) at Kirn Primary were missing on World Book Day! Instead, the school was filled with Little Red Riding Hood, The Big Bad Wolf, Cruella de Ville (and a dalmatian), The Cat in the Hat, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Wally, Nanny McPhee, even Willy Wonka and an Oompah Loompah! Everyone had a great time as they visited other classes to read and be read to. Back in class there was story writing, bookmark making, and of course, lots of reading for pleasure. The Literacy Group Plan an Amazing World Book Day

Colgrain Primary P5 Literacy Group planned an exciting day of celebrations for World Book Day. They worked alongside Mrs Neil ( a parent helper) and Mrs Candlish (P6/7 teacher.) Children were invited to dress up as their favourite book character. They were also asked to bring their favourite books to school as a stimulus for quality conversations. We held a whole school assembly, including the nursery, where we learned all about the history of World Book Day and how wide spread the celebrations are.
