In June 2013, a number of pupils from Dunoon Grammar School joined together to create a short film to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking. The film was called ‘The Last Cigarette’ and was made by passionate drama students along with the help of David Hayman’s film company, Shooters and NHS Highland. The film originally came about because the NHS had asked the Charity Spirit Aid, also operated by David Hayman, to come up with ideas for an anti-smoking video that would be aimed at young people and would encourage them to not only stop smoking but not to start in the first place. Barcaldine Pupils help fell the Oban Christmas Tree
Last week pupils from Barcaldine Primary School were in Sutherland’s Grove setting up their Sgoil na Coilltean (School in the Woods). While they were surveying the woodland with Rory MacLean (Forestry Commission Scotland) for trees that could be felled, they were invited to assist with the Health and Safety operations for the felling of the Oban Christmas tree with Rory and Argyll and Bute Council.

PINK FRIDAY
October is Breast Cancer awareness month and one of the suggestions to raise money is to hold a Pink Friday. The staff in Argyll House rose to the challenge, and paid a pound to wear something pink. The staff baked and contributed prizes to help support the day. As well as a bake sale, there was a raffle and lots of other prizes to be won, including a large food hamper. The amount raised was over £500. A fun day had by all while an incredible amount was raised for this worthy cause.
‘Colgrain’s Cosmic Landing’
Colgrain P1 and nursery pupils have been learning all about how to be safe when crossing the road. We have learned all about the importance of looking, listening and holding hands. We have also learned about the safest places to cross. Ziggy heard about all our hard work and he flew down in his rocket to visit us. We shared our learning with him and asked him lots of questions. What a cosmic time we had!
Strone Primary Schools pupils receive Sports Prize
Active Schools Co-Ordinator Lindsay Mitchell presented Strone Primary School pupils with a bag of sports equipment for having the highest percentage of pupils taking part in the Commonwealth Passports scheme last year, which rewarded pupils participating in extra-curricular sports activities both in and out of school.

Jump Rope for Heart challenge at Strone Primary School
As part of an action packed Health Week at Strone Primary, pupils took on the British Heart Foundation’s Jump Rope for Heart sponsored skipping challenge and raised a fantastic £260!
The week long programme also included taster sessions in yoga, karate and zumba, wildfire cooking and outdoor learning activities.

Former SPL Star Visits DGS
It’s not every day that DGS pupils can boast of being part of a football training session with a national cup winning manager – but that is exactly what happened last week, when Dylan Kerr visited the school.
Dylan enjoyed a very long and distinguished playing career, including successful spells with Leeds United and Kilmarnock.
Road Safety at Rothesay Joint Campus
The Eco Committee has been working with PC Heather Simpson on the 20 mph speed limit area outside the school. Heather told the pupils that when the lights flash it means that drivers are reminded to be aware of pupils traveling to or from school and to slow down.

Primary 7 of Dalintober Primary School have had a very busy start to session 2014-2015.
During September and October they have been involved in a “Smoke Free Me” presentation by Raenbow Productions, organised a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support which raised £286.73 and visited a First World War Exhibition in Campbeltown’s Heritage Centre.

Marvellous Macmillan Coffee Morning at DGS
DGS Staff and invited visitors enjoyed a fantastic coffee morning organised by pupils from the school’s learning centre on Thursday, 2 October – all in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
What a load of rubbish!
As a conclusion to their IDL (Inter disciplinary Learning) of Eco, the children of Clachan and Skipness Primary Schools put on a show stopping performance. As part of their learning the children had completed either a beach clean or a litter walk around their village.
One Planet Picnic at Strath of Appin Primary School.
The One Planet Picnic initiative is part of the Keep Scotland Beautiful Eco-Schools programme and Clean and Green Legacy 2014. It is designed to raise awareness of where food comes from, and how it is produced.
Strath of Appin Primary School’s picnic took the form of a Harvest lunch where all the children and staff in the school were invited to enjoy fabulous foods that had been freshly prepared in the school kitchen.

Stand Up To Cancer
At a request from our local Charity shop Cancer Research UK, we agreed to take part in ‘Stand Up To Cancer’ National Fundraiser. The children paid a donation in exchange for wearing clothes other than school uniform.
We raised a incredible £130.00
Inspired by the Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup wasn’t the only closely contested golf match this week, as twenty three pupils from some of the smaller Cowal Primary schools took part in their very own golf challenge at Blairmore and Strone Golf Course. As part of Strone Primary’s Health Week, they hosted a golf festival for teams of players from; Innellan, Toward, Tighnabruaich, Strone, Strachur and Sandbank Primaries, in conjunction with Blairmore and Strone Golf Club and Active Schools.

Primary 1 and 2’s Health Day
In our class we work hard at keeping healthy. So we were delighted to take part in the primary Health Day.
We prepared a selection of fruit and then chose pieces to create our very own Fruit Kebab. Everyone enjoyed the Bhangra dancing in the hall and we had great fun trying new moves.
Active Girls Day at Dalintober PS
Dance Leaders from Campbeltown Grammar School came along to Dalintober Primary on Friday 3rd October to teach some energetic routines to P1-7 girls as part of the celebration of Active Girls Day. Everyone had a fantastic time and Dalintober would like to thank Morgan, Kathryn, Chloe and Hannah for giving up their time and showing us some new moves!
Food to Fork Adventure for Rothesay Primary
Rothesay Primary Eco Committee visited Tesco in Greenock this week to learn more about where their food comes from. Ruth Sharkey set us our first task – to find a rainbow of fruit and veg, name them and find their country of origin. Robin was amazed to find his bananas came all the way from the Cameroons! Next we ventured into the deep freeze! At -12 degrees we had to dress up very warmly. Ruth told us that it is important to keep the food very cold and that the freezers usually run at minus 20 brrrrrr!

Achaleven investigates life on a fish farm.
As part of their topic on the sea Achaleven Primary asked Scottish Sea Farms if they could visit. The staff were fantastic organising all the health & safety involved (including buying in special child lifejackets) and arranged for a trip out to one of their farms at Shuna.
They were taken to the workboat, ‘Endeavour’ and headed out to the farm. It amazed them that amount of technology there is in the middle of the sea – all the computers and cameras!

Campbeltown Grammar School golfers get up close to the Ryder Cup Pupils from Campbeltown Grammar School welcomed the Ryder Cup to Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club in Kintyre on a tour of Scotland before the Gleneagles event tees off on 26th September. On that date Europe’s top golfers will take on those of the USA for the 2014 Ryder Cup – from 26th to 28th September. Richard Hills, Europe’s Ryder Cup director, says: ‘This is about sharing the magic of the Ryder Cup. ‘Piloxing’ Comes to Dalintober P
P4, 5, 6 and 7 girls enjoyed some taster ‘Piloxing’ sessions from local instructor, Mairi McKillop. Mairi will now deliver after-school sessions as part of the ‘Dalintober PS/Active Schools Partnership’ to promote activities and clubs in the local community.
