Primary 5 recently applied to the Royal Horticultural Society to take part in a very special experiment. British astronaut Tim Peake sent down a bag of seeds from outer space in April and asked the boys and girls to grow the seeds to see if being in an area of zero gravity affected the way that the seeds grow! After many weeks of watering, measuring and following Tim’s journey, Mr Henry sent the collected data to be entered into the ‘Rocket Science Database’, with some very interesting results! There certainly could be life on Mars in the very near future!

Solar Ovens for use on the Moon!
Primary 5/4 pupils at Kilcreggan Primary have been creating Solar Ovens from everyday materials. Pupils had been looking at how technology has developed over the past 90 years and thinking about designing some technology for the future. Their discussions led them to think about how people might cook in the future.
JUNIOR SALTIRE WINNERS!
Last week Joe, Bronagh, Kaya and Murray traveled with Mrs Clark and Mrs Leask to Glasgow and Edinburgh to take part in the Celebration of Science and Engineering run by @scdiYESC at the Glasgow Science Centre. They were finalists in the Junior Saltire Awards with their Wave Islay design, made with help from Bronagh’s dad Gus, an excellent boat builder. They tested their devices at the Flowave facility in Edinburgh along with 6 other primary schools and 5 secondary schools, before attending the event and presenting to the judges.
ECO SCHOOLS POCKET GARDEN WINNERS
On Thursday 2nd June Mirren and Rebecca traveled to Edinburgh to set up their One Planet Picnic Pocket Pallet Garden after winning an Eco Schools Scotland garden design competition. When they arrived, they set up their Hogwarts Buzzing garden for the next morning when the show would be held. The garden was designed to attract bees. The Garden Show was held in Ingliston. They next morning Mirren and Rebecca and their families went to the show. There were lots of really good gardens from other sections and the section Mirren and Rebecca’s garden was in. They looked around all of the gardens and then they went back to theirs because a politician,Roseanna Cunningham, came to look at our garden and asked us questions about it. Then we got our picture taken by a photographer. After that we all went to look at other gardens and got ice-cream before we traveled back down the road to the ferry.

SANDBANK PUPILS HELP TO ‘SEND MY FRIEND TO SCHOOL’
The pupils of Sandbank Primary School and the Early Learning and Childcare Unit are very aware of how lucky they are to have access to a safe and stable school environment where they can learn and have fun together with their friends. They, along with their teachers, know that this is unfortunately not the case for all children around the world and the school regularly has participated in the “Send My Friend to School Project”

International Education at St. Joseph’s!
St. Joseph’s was delighted to host an information afternoon for some Dutch teaching colleagues this week. A total of nine colleagues from Holland joined us to find out a bit more about the Scottish Education System. We had been approached by Strathclyde University as the Dutch teachers were their visitors and were in Scotland to look at Science and Technology in particular. Having previously been involved with Strathclyde University in developing their VIP approach to Science (for which they won an award), we were happy to help.

Rothesay Primary School Eco Day
Rothesay Primary School held their first ever Eco day on Monday 9th May. It was a huge success. The Eco committee worked with teachers to organise lots of different activities and all 255 pupils took part. Some of the favourite things were making (and eating) fruit kebabs, making bird feeders, parachute games, Eco art, making Earth mobiles, and singing Eco songs. ‘World of Work’ Week at Dalintober PS and ELCC
Pupils at Dalintober & ELCC embarked on a journey of discovery through the world of work.
The week involved a range of visits to places of work in the local area and the school also welcomed a wide variety of visitors through its doors to work with classes.
ELCC had a visit from our School Crossing Patroller and the children loved taking turns to hold the lollipop.

Science with Skipness, Clachan and Tarbert
Day 1: In space base we looked at all the planets. We found out about what people thought the solar system looked like before telescopes. Then when telescopes were invented we were able to see the solar system like it is today.
In fizz bang boom we had to make a fizzy, cool, colourful chemical reaction. We also created a huge party popper which made a ball of fire (but only a quick one) and we made a very messy experiment which was basically a volcano.

Rockfield Primary 7 donates 57 Backpacks to Mary’s Meals!
In February 2016 Bill Clifford, a guest speaker from Mary’s Meals, came and spoke to the Primary 7class about the ways in which the Mary’s Meals charity helps children. After the visit the Primary 7 pupils asked if they could take part in the Mary’s Meals Backpack Project.

Walk a Mile for Malawi!
On Wednesday 30th March, all of the boys and girls from Colgrain Pre-5 Unit right up to P7 took part in a special event to raise money for the Nora Docherty Foundation that has built schools and supports children in the Dedza region of Malawi. We had to walk a mile round the African village that had been set up in our school grounds.
Park Primary Fairtrade Fortnight
Over the last ten days Park Primary School has gone Fairtrade crazy! Fairtrade Fortnight was kicked off with a Fairtrade themed assembly hosted by the Eco Group. All children wore their pyjamas as the assembly, which followed this year’s theme of ‘Sit down for breakfast, stand up for farmers!’ Then on Friday 4th March there was a Fairtrade snack day where all children and staff were encouraged to bring or purchase a Fairtrade snack at the Fairtrade themed tuck shop, opened and run by the Primary 7s over the fortnight!
Fair-trade Big Breakfast at Rhunahaorine
Children at Rhunahaorine celebrated Fair Trade Fortnight with a Big Breakfast on Friday 4th March.
Parents, pupils and staff enjoyed wearing our onesies and tucking in to hot chocolate, fruit and cereals to raise awareness of the plight of the farmers who produce our breakfasts. We learned that millions of farmers in developing countries work hard to grow the food we eat yet many don’t even get enough to eat. We are trying to help them by making sure that our healthy breakfasts are also Fair Trade.

Strachur Early Level Class Forest School
Our early level class have had two very exciting sessions of Forest School led by our P1-2 teacher, Mrs Leyland. Our Pre-5, Primary 1 and Primary 2 pupils have enjoyed getting muddy whilst developing various skills in outdoor education.

On Friday the 18th December, the pupils of Dunoon Grammar School took part in a whole school debate on ‘should the UK government renew Trident?’ This was the culmination of three weeks of preparation, research and speech writing for everyone involved.

Christmas Spirit at St. Joseph’s
The children and parents of St. Joseph’s were recently asked to donate luxury food items to school during the season of advent to assist those in need in the community. As a tradition St Joseph’s has always made food bags and given them to the senior citizens in the area. However, this year we decided to spread the Christmas cheer even further. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of parents and pupils and were not only able to give food bags to the senior citizens but also made healthy donations of food to the Food bank in Helensburgh. Donation to Raven Trust
Strachur Primary P6-7 have donated proceeds from selling a school newspaper to a local charity that supports communities in Malawi. They also sold second hand school uniforms, making their total donation up to £70. The money will be used to purchase jotters and pens for school children across Malawi. Mr Challis from the Raven Trust was very thankful for the donation and promised to come back with photographs from his trip next year. Annie and Tommi (house captains) are pictured presenting the cheque to Mr Challis.
Dunoon Primary School Nepal Appeal
When last year’s p4 in Dunoon Primary heard of the shocking devastation following the earthquakes in Nepal, they were determined to do something to help the people, who had suffered such losses in the tragedy. They searched online for information about the country and its people and then looked for ways to help. Their initial concern was the lack of clean water, so they organised a raffle and sent £81.15 to UNICEF, who were providing water in the region. However, the help did not stop there.
