Commonwealth Games on Lismore

The North Lorn Primary Schools – Lismore, Strath of Appin, Ardchattan, Barcaldine along with Achaleven and Kilchrenan from further afield, held their own Commonwealth Games on Lismore on Thursday 5th June. Calmac very kindly ran two special ferries to accommodate the 70 visiting children together with staff and parents. The Games began with an Opening Ceremony where each school representing a different Commonwealth country paraded with a flag and a banner before performing a dance or song from their chosen nation.

Rockfield Primary Kodu competition

Rockfield’s Budding Computer Programmers
Congratulations to all the children in P7/6/5G who participated in the recent Argyll and Bute Kodu Competition. P7/6G took part in the competition last year and very willingly shared their expertise with the children in P5G. The children worked individually or in small groups within their age category to produce some fabulous games with very interesting titles like Litter, Pollution and Disco Heaven.

Rothesay Primary were delighted to be asked to send another 50 pieces of art for the Commonwealth Games Athlete’s Village. Initially, we sent 10, as the winners of an art competition, but Game On Scotland were so impressed with our entries that they asked for more – a lot more!

Christian Aid Netball/Football

Cardross Primary were the winners at the recent Christian Aid Netball Tournament organised by Mrs Clark from Garelochhead Primary. The standard of play was amazing with St Joseph’s, Rhu, Colgrain and Cardross in the semi-final stages. Cardross were given a tough match against Colgrain Primary in the final. It was a great event and many thanks to all of the players, coaches and volunteers at the event.
Cardross haven’t lifted the trophy since 2001 and we were delighted!

What a coup for St Joseph’s!

What a result for the netball team of St Joseph’s at the recent Christain Aid Netball Tournament. Under the excellent tuition of Geraldine Wilkie of G84 the team have climbed the ranks from 10th last year to 4th – phenomenal leap which was widely commented upon on the night! The whole school was delighted to hear the news and celebrated the team’s success. It’s onwards and upwards now for St. Joseph’s team!

Oban Musical Success for Rockfield Pupils

Children from Oban’s Rockfield Primary had a fantastic time at the recent Highlands and Islands Music and Dance Festival, taking part in a range of competitions involving over 100 children from pre-school to P7.

The Festival’s Action Song class is an event in itself. Rockfield’s Gaelic pre-school and P2/1 Gaelic class performed Seo a’ Chroit aig Calum Ruadh, a Gaelic version of ‘Old MacDonald Had a Farm’, while the P2 classes performed The Fireman.

Oban Pupils Present Prize-winning Gaelic Drama

Pupils from Rockfield Primary School’s P1-4 Gaelic classes performed a prize-winning play at the recent Argyll and Lochaber Gaelic Drama Festival, held in Oban’s Corran Halls.

The children presented ‘An t-Each Acrach’ about a very hungry horse, and were delighted that their performance was awarded the prize for best costumes and props.

Salen Success

Pupils and staff at Salen Primary were delighted to hear we have been awarded a Sport Scotland Gold Award for achieving excellence in physical education and school sport. The staff found out on Friday but we decided to keep it a secret so we could announce it at the start of our Commonwealth Games Week.

Blythswood Enterprise Challenge

Primary 7 at Park School recently took part in the Blythswood Enterprise competition. For this, they were given £20 to start a business in order to raise money to provide fire engines in Eastern Europe. The class had 4 weeks to make this money grow so they decided to create a moustache themed stationery shop.

Proud Kodu Competition Winner!

Aidan, a P6 pupil of Dunoon Primary School was delighted last week to hear that he had come joint first in a Kodu Competition for primary schools across Argyll & Bute. Using Kodu, Aidan designed an online game with the Commonwealth Games theme. He was thrilled to receive a prize of a Raspberry Pi donated by local businessman and entrepreneur Sam Coley of Samteq. Aidan now intends to submit his game into the national Scottish Kodu Competition.

Dalintober PS Pupils Encourage MOKRUNNERS

P2, P4 and P6 pupils from Dalintober PS designed posters to motivate and inspire participants in Campbeltown’s MOKRUN 10k route. MOKRUN – a 10k and half marathon – is an annual highlight in the town, and was voted the world’s number one event by ‘Running World’. All at Dalintober PS wish the competitors all the best in their endeavours, with a special mention for the staff members, parents and family members who are participating. Good Luck!

Shadowing the Kate Greenaway Award for Illustrations at Kirn Primary

P3 have been taking part in the Kate Greenaway Awards by ‘Shadowing’ the judges on this very prestigious prize for book illustration. Kirn’s PTA generously funded the purchase of the seven shortlisted books, and P3 are reading them, commenting and discussing each one then posting their thoughts on the national website, along with thousands of others.

Onesies and Cake……The Perfect Day!

On Friday 16th May Rosneath Primary School held a Onesie and Cake Sale Day to raise money for the Sunday Mail Centenary Fund. This fund supports many worthy charities, such as: Breast Cancer Care, CHAS, Childline, Erskine, Shelter and many more.
All children arrived to school in their colourful onesies and laden with yummy cakes to sell. In class each all pupils took part in a ‘Design a Onesie’ competition, in which the winning designer from each class received a certificate and prize.

Easdale Art Award!

Congratulations to Aaron MacLarty from P3 Easdale Primary who was awarded a Special Merit in the Tesco Bank Art Competition.
There were over 7,000 entries from all over Scotland so to be amongst the winners was a major achievement.
His winning entry, a collage of a soldier drumming, will be displayed at the Scottish National Gallery Edinburgh from 7th June – 28th October.

ARGYLL AND BUTE YOUNG ENTERPRISE

The annual Presentation Evening for Argyll and Bute Young Enterprise Companies was held on 1 May at the Argyll Hotel, Inveraray. Five companies were involved this year – 2 from Oban High School, one from Lochgilphead and 2 from Dunoon Grammar School. The judges – Donald Melville, Adviser from Business Gateway and Alex Emslie, retired Business Adviser had previously received copies of Company Reports to allow time to look them over and allocate marks for this part of the process.

National Fairtrade Snack Attack Competition 2014

Lismore Primary School children were delighted to hear that they have been awarded first place in the National Fairtrade Snack Attack Competition 2014. Schools from all over the United Kingdom and further afield competed to design a fun Fairtrade snack, together with its packaging, a marketing campaign and a report about their activities. Led by Classroom Assistant, Hazel MacCormick, the Lismore children worked together as a company, brainstorming and presenting ideas before splitting into groups to take on the different responsibilities of graphic design, marketing and logistics.

WORTHY MEDAL WINNERS

Rosneath Primary School were delighted to take part in the Inter Schools Cross Country Run at Helensburgh Rugby Club today.
For a small school, we were absolutely delighted and SO proud to come away with the Gold medal for P6 Girls (Eva Campbell) and the Bronze medal for P7 Boys (Marcus Frame).
A GREAT BIG WELL DONE to all of our runners and to everyone who took part and crossed that Finish Line.

P2 Pupils from Castlehill visit local Co-op

Primary 2 from Castlehill Primary School enjoyed a visit from the Co-op who talked about the environment and Fairtrade Products and the children entered a Green schools Competition. Their Eco pictures were displayed in the foyer of the Co-op during the Easter holidays.
The children then visited the Co-op and would like to thank the staff for their kind donation of seeds and compost for their school garden and also for the Easter treats.
