A feast of Local Foods at Salen Primary Health Day

Health Day Salen PS2Primary 6 pupils from Salen, Lochdonhead and Ulva Primary schools treated all staff and pupils to a lunch of locally produced food as the highlight of Health Day where the theme was Healthy Eating. They took over the school kitchen for the morning and, under the guidance of sous chef Michael Shannon from the Western Isles Hotel, assisted by Iona, and Eilidh and Debbie from the school kitchen, they prepared and served a feast of wonderful Mull produce which had been kindly donated by local producers.

Health Week at Rosneath

Last week, 24th – 28th November, Rosneath Primary School enjoyed an action packed Health Week. Pupils experienced a range of activities and workshops, including: Stramash, Heartstart, SOS Fitness, Community Police and Community Lollipop Lady. The health week coincided with the free school lunch pilot for P1-3 and we were delighted to see a large number of pupils tucking into healthy school lunches, yum yum! P1-7 parents were also invited to join their children for a school lunch.

Strone Primary Schools pupils receive Sports Prize

Active Schools Co-Ordinator Lindsay Mitchell presented Strone Primary School pupils with a bag of sports equipment for having the highest percentage of pupils taking part in the Commonwealth Passports scheme last year, which rewarded pupils participating in extra-curricular sports activities both in and out of school.

Jump Rope for Heart challenge at Strone Primary School

As part of an action packed Health Week at Strone Primary, pupils took on the British Heart Foundation’s Jump Rope for Heart sponsored skipping challenge and raised a fantastic £260!

The week long programme also included taster sessions in yoga, karate and zumba, wildfire cooking and outdoor learning activities.

It’s not every day that DGS pupils can boast of being part of a football training session with a national cup winning manager – but that is exactly what happened last week, when Dylan Kerr visited the school.
Dylan enjoyed a very long and distinguished playing career, including successful spells with Leeds United and Kilmarnock.

Inspired by the Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup wasn’t the only closely contested golf match this week, as twenty three pupils from some of the smaller Cowal Primary schools took part in their very own golf challenge at Blairmore and Strone Golf Course. As part of Strone Primary’s Health Week, they hosted a golf festival for teams of players from; Innellan, Toward, Tighnabruaich, Strone, Strachur and Sandbank Primaries, in conjunction with Blairmore and Strone Golf Club and Active Schools.

Primary 1 and 2’s Health Day

In our class we work hard at keeping healthy. So we were delighted to take part in the primary Health Day.

We prepared a selection of fruit and then chose pieces to create our very own Fruit Kebab. Everyone enjoyed the Bhangra dancing in the hall and we had great fun trying new moves.

Stramash visit Barcaldine Primary

Stramash visited us again last week however this time we got to stay in our own playground. We were joined by Achaleven primary School pupils and Rob from Stramash delivered a PE session with all the children. We certainly had a beautiful day for it and we actually had to take shelter because it was so hot.

Last week the children from Barcaldine Primary School had two excursions with Stramash. On Tuesday the children enjoyed a hiking adventure and went along to Ben Lora in Benderloch. The weather wasn’t kind to us but we managed to reach the viewpoint without too much mud on our wellies. On Thursday we were taken along to Loch Creran where we went canoeing. The children had a ball and we even found a starfish! Thanks very much to Stramash for two amazing days.

The Rolls Royce Science Project, ‘If You Go Down In The Woods Today’, has definitely inspired a number of children in the school. None more so than 3 Primary 7s, Leonie Cuddahy, Ewan McIntosh and Scott Stewart, who decided to write to Blue Peter and tell them what they had been up to over the course of the last year.

Club Golf at Kilmartin P.S.

All of the children in the school had the most wonderful time recently when they got the chance through Active Schools to learn some golfing skills. Over four weeks the children learned to putt and chip turning the school’s beautiful grounds into their own golf course! All of the wonderful golf equipment is now ours to keep and we plan to start a golf after school club in August. You never know – maybe some of our Kilmartin children will play in the Ryder Cup in the future.

Salen Success

Pupils and staff at Salen Primary were delighted to hear we have been awarded a Sport Scotland Gold Award for achieving excellence in physical education and school sport. The staff found out on Friday but we decided to keep it a secret so we could announce it at the start of our Commonwealth Games Week.

Park Primary gains SportScotland Gold School Award

After a lot of hard work from both staff and children, Park School have just been awarded Gold in the School Sport Awards. We are the first school in Scotland to achieve this status.

This was a pilot award which was open to schools in Argyll and Bute and East Renfrewshire. As Park has a very strong record of promoting and encouraging Health and Wellbeing, and participation in a wide range of sports, we are delighted to have this work recognised.

Kidz Fit at DPS!!

Today Dunoon Primary was treated to a day with Kidz Fit! The gym hall was filled with smiling faces and the skilful instructor Carl put the pupils through their paces! Kidz Fit sessions educate children about how to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle, how the human body works, as well as the importance of giving one hundred percent and being the best we can be! The ultimate goal is to improve Every Child’s self esteem, physical and mental well-being, confidence, and motivation, all combining For A Better Future.

Sponsored cycle at Small Isles

In the Easter holidays almost all the children from Small Isles Primary on Jura took part in a sponsored cycle ride from Craighouse to Lagg. It’s a seven and a half mile cycle with some challenging hills, and everyone managed to do it, even our Primary One person. It took two hours for everyone to get there.

Bunessan Easter Fun Run

Children in the P5,6,7 class of Bunessan Primary School have been busy raising money to restore the local war memorial which stands just outside the playground. They decided to take part in the local Easter Fun Run and raised money by collecting from spectators. The children have been quite overwhelmed by the support they have received for this project and are well on the way to eventually exceeding their target. Their hard work and dedication will ensure that the memorial survives into the next century.

Stramash Easter and Summer Youth Programme 2014

Stramash’s Youth Programme this year is one of the best yet, with loads of fantastic outdoor opportunities for young people aged 3-17, throughout the Easter and Summer holidays. All our courses allow children and young people to learn and develop, discover new places, build confidence, have fun, make new friends and be active outdoors! As well as our surf camp, yacht expedition and kayak residentials, we have lots of great additions including dinghy sailing courses, British Canoe Union courses, and lots, lots more!
