Bunessan War Memorial

The P5,6,7 class in Bunessan Primary have worked hard to raise money to refurbish the War Memorial which stands just outside their playground. The children have been completely overwhelmed by the support they received for this project and last week stage one of the refurbishment was completed when Oban Memorials were able to clean the stone and repaint the letters. Ross Kirsop kindly donated the scaffolding and the Fire Brigade made sure that there was enough water for the pressure washer.

Bunessan Easter Fun Run

Children in the P5,6,7 class of Bunessan Primary School have been busy raising money to restore the local war memorial which stands just outside the playground. They decided to take part in the local Easter Fun Run and raised money by collecting from spectators. The children have been quite overwhelmed by the support they have received for this project and are well on the way to eventually exceeding their target. Their hard work and dedication will ensure that the memorial survives into the next century.

Bunessan Primary PTS Burns Supper

‘A fantastic evening was had by all at the Bunessan Primary PTA Burns Supper held on Friday 25th January. The haggis was piped in by Neil MacCallam and Bob Lawson provided a rousing rendition of ‘Address to the Haggis’. Once Mrs. MacCallum, our P5/6/7 teacher, had said the ‘Selkirk Grace’ we all tucked into a delicious three course feast prepared and served by PTA members. After dinner the children provided some Scottish entertainment for the guests. Continue reading Bunessan Primary PTS Burns Supper

Bunessan choir and chanters.

Bunessan Primary School P6/7 choir and chanter players entertained the local community at the Christmas Community Cafe held in December 2012. The choir, The Gracenotes, sang a variety of popular Christmas carols including verses that they composed themselves while the chanter group played Amazing Grace. Whilst there, the P5’s were resposible for selling Christmas cards that the children had designed to raise money for school funds. All present had a great time and the children were praised for representing their school within the local community. Continue reading Bunessan choir and chanters.

Community Christmas Tree Festival

The P1/2 class from Bunessan Primary School had an excellent time decorating a tree for the Ross of Mull and Iona Community Christmas Tree Festival held in Bunessan Hall on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th December. The theme this year was a ‘special event’, so the P5/6/7 class decided that we should decorate our tree in a forest theme as they’d all very much enjoyed forest workshops with An Tobar artist in residence, Emma. Oban Auction Market visit.

Bunessan Primary 5,6 & 7 classes recently enjoyed an excellent day at Oban Market. This was the culmination of their recent crofting topic. The auctioneer, Raymond, took the children on a tour of the market and the children learned about the different breeds of sheep and Raymond explained how he decided what price to start the auction at. The children then had an opportunity to be the auctioneer and the buyers. The most exciting part was watching the auction and trying to spot who was bidding. Bunessan Primary Pre5 Sponsored Walk

On Friday 21st September 2012 Bunessan Primary Pre-5 Unit did a sponsored walk to support Yorkhill Children’s Foundation.  We walked from school to the bridge in Bunessan and back again.  The children also brought their favourite toys to play with and enjoyed a celebratory cake and juice after the walk.  The children thoroughly enjoyed this event and were well supported by family and friends.  We raised the grand total of £183.50.

Croft visit

As part of their crofting topic P5,6,7 pupils from Bunessan Primary enjoyed a very informative visit to two local crofts.  On the croft they learned about cutting peat and how to look after different kinds of animals.

They especially enjoyed comparing crofting methods from the past with the present eg the horse with the quad and the scythe with the binder.

LOCAL MOD & FOREST PARTNERS

On Friday, 7th September Bunessan Primary went to Tobermory to the local mod.  Some people sang a solo and some people were in the choir which came second.   Byron came first in the chanter.  Everyone got a certificate.  We liked seeing other people singing and everyone had a good time.

At An Tobar we looked at leaves which we had made at school as part of the Forest Partners project.  They were made from clay, glass and bronze.  There was a film that the P5, 6, 7 class were in.  We wrote our names on leaves and they were put on the floor of the exhibition.  The whole exhibition looked really cool and amazing.  There were lots of leaves hanging down with fairy lights shining.  It looked like an enchanted forest.  We had lots of fun and got goody bags.  By Claire, Iain & Amy – P4

Archaeological dig

Pupils from P5,6,7 Bunessan Primary took part in an archaeological dig on Iona with archaeologist Bob Will.  The dig is taking place all this week on land owned by the Iona Housing trust who are currently developing proposals for 5 new affordable houses on the Glebe Field site for the community of Iona.  The children enjoyed learning new skills and eagerly quizzed Bob about what had been found and what they might hope to find.
