St. Mun’s Pupils Awarded Blue Peter Green Badge
The Rolls Royce Science Project, ‘If You Go Down In The Woods Today’, has definitely inspired a number of children in the school. None more so than 3 Primary 7s, Leonie Cuddahy, Ewan McIntosh and Scott Stewart, who decided to write to Blue Peter and tell them what they had been up to over the course of the last year.
The children sent photos of themselves in the garden and showed them an idea they had for re-cycling old crisps packets to brighten up ‘boring’ fencing around the school.
Ewan Vinnicombe, Blue Peter’s editor, wrote to the trio to congratulate them on their interesting project and presented them with their Green Badge and Blue Peter Badge Card, which allows them free access to many attractions. Green Badges are presented to Blue Peter viewers who care about the environment and nature.
St. Mun’s Visit Morag’s Fairy Glen
Thursday 5th June saw Morag’s Fairy Glen in Dunoon infested with a few dozen extra ‘little people’, as the children from Primary 1 at St. Mun’s along with their Primary 7 Buddies took to the muddy tracks of the Glen in search of ‘creepy crawlies’. Earlier in the week the Primary 7s had made pitfall traps with the Primary 1s before planting them in the Glen before the big visit.
The school is one of nine National Finalists in the Rolls Royce Science Awards and have been involved in the planning and research of various biodiversity projects under the umbrella of the main project ‘If You Go Down In The Wood Today’, which aimed to make children more aware of the consequences of not looking after the planet and in particular the importance invertabrates play in keeping our varied eco-systems alive and healthy.
Primary 1 and 7 were involved in the filming of the introductory video, which can be found on the school website or by clicking HERE The project has provide a progressive range of sustainable outdoor learning experiences, maximising the use of local contexts, using repeat visits to add depth to the experiences, which the children have helped to plan.
After exploring the rich variety of plants and trees in the Glen and checking the pitfall traps, the children then made ‘Journey Sticks’, which mapped their journey through the Glen using items they had collected. After a well earned picnic in the West Bay the children then worked together to make beautiful pieces of beach art.
A great day was had by all.
Success At Cowal Police Sports
The annual gathering of competitors at the Cowal Police Sports, from schools in and around the Cowal area, took place on Friday 6th June. The sun shone as each school, resplendent in their school colours, took to the field in the 5-a-side football and athletics competitions.
As each school was introduced to the crowd of competitors and spectators, a tremendous roar went up filling the stand with a cacophony of noise, which carried on throughout the day as the children shouted their support.
Primary 4 – 7 (and Carla from P.3) displayed great athleticism and showed that even if you don’t win, it’s the fact you challenged yourself to do something you never thought you could that’s the greatest achievement. Many of the children competing in the athletics returned with a medal of some kind, while the boys football team retained their title after a very hotly contested final with Dunoon Primary.
A big thank you to the organisers of the event and an even bigger well done to all those who took part.
