Holly Smith, first year student of Lochgilphead High School, was selected out of 74,000 entries to take part in the next stage of the Chris Evans’ 500 Word Short Story competition.
The nationwide competition held by the Radio 2 breakfast show was open to any pupil under the age of 14 that could invent an imaginative storyline. Holly came up with the concept of her story whilst doing a class exercise in English, and her piece was specially chosen to be included in the shortlist of the top 50 entrants.

Death and the Afterlife
S1/2 in Tobermory completed their RME conferences for this year with a day on the theme of Death and the Afterlife. This could have been a particularly difficult theme to work on but S1/2 participated in the day in a sensitive and thoughtful manner. The group started the morning together discussing why we have funeral services and went to the church where Mr Paton talked through some of the ways in which people deal with loss and how a funeral might look in the Church of Scotland and how funerals have changed over the years. S2 History pupils get the chance to dig up the past!
On Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd May a return visit of around forty S2 Lochgilphead High School History pupils took place at Dun Muirich medieval fort at Tayvallich to take part in an actual archaeological dig, thanks again to the generosity of Kate Moody of Kilmartin House Museum and Roddy Reagan, the archaeologist in charge . The weather was good over the two days, and the minibus swiftly took four runs back and forth to the site, accompanied again by either Mr Wire or Mr Kemp of the Social Subjects Department.

Duke of Edinburgh
Three pupils from Campbeltown Grammar School recently completed an overnight camp in preparation for the completion of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) Award. Jo Chinn, Liam MacCallum and Alice Morton hiked part of the Kintyre Way and camped overnight at Bordadubh. They experienced every kind of weather – snow, sun and gales on their hike!

‘Expert Tuition from Dunoon Grammar Schools Pupils’
Dunoon Primary School were assisted by 4 DGS pupils and Mr Shaw to get the Skillsbook programme up and running. The four students Steven, Keith, Heather and Ben worked really diligently and enthusiastically with our P6 and P5 pupils. The children loved learning this new exciting project and can’t wait to do more with the programme. The comments from our pupils were ‘Terrific, Cool, Can’t wait to get started!’

Christian Aid Football Tournament
On Monday 13th May the annual Christian Aid football tournament took place at Hermitage Academy. Schools from Helensburgh and the local area took place in, what was to be, a very wet football tournament. The Hermitage football team were competing for the first time since the National Finals in which they managed to come 3rd in the whole of Scotland. Their first game was against Cardross which Hermitage won 3-1. They followed this with another two impressive results against Lomond and JLB winning 5-0 and 7-0.

“Magic at Tarbert Academy”
Tarbert Academy nursery and P1/2 children have been working together on a “Fairyland” topic. This is being used as transition for the nursery children as they have been spending Wednesday mornings with their new teacher and her class.
They have all been very busy helping the dragon to build Fairyland. The dragon sent some magic beans which the children planted. The beans grew and grew and the beanstalks are quite tall now.

New Band on the Block
A brand new after school Wind Band ”Ceol Na Cloinne”(Music of the Children) for Primary 3 & 4 children has been formed on the Isle of Islay; they meet every Friday at 4.00 pm at Islay High School and they are already making some great sounds. The young musicians come from every Primary School on the island and they really enjoy making music together.
Loghilphead Joint Campus – Fundraiser for Rainbow Valley
ON the 4th May a group of senior students and one of their teachers from Lochgilphead High School, bravely shaved their heads for charity.
The event which took place in front of the public at the Argyll Inn on Sunday was in aid of the local cancer charity, Rainbow Valley. The group of fundraisers included fifth year student Lee MacLean, fourth years Coll MacCallum and Patrick Feeney, as well as English teacher Ronnie Cameron. On Thursday the 2nd May, John Shearer of Badminton Scotland came to the Joint Campus to present the High School with the ‘School of the Month’ award for April 2013. Jillian Gibson, Active Schools Co-ordinator, nominated the High School largely due to the success of the after school club which ‘is the most popular club currently running at the school, with over 30 pupils attending each week.’

Over the last year, Lochgilphead High School’s Young Enterprise team has created T-shirts designed by themselves, and have excelled in selling the product to fellow school pupils and peers. The team was automatically entered in the area finals which took place on the 23 of April at Inveraray, directly competing against other schools.

Tarbert Academy Drama Club
Tarbert Academy drama club recently took part in the Argyll Drama Festival which took place in Ardrishaig village hall. The club has at present 18 members, 14 from P6 and 7, 2 from first year and one each from second and third years. The play they performed was “A Thirty Minute Dream” which is an abridged form of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
AB Awards- celebrating youth achievement.
We are pleased to announce that the first Argyll and Bute Celebrating Youth Achievement event the AB Awards will take place on Thursday 19th September 2013. Based in Oban’s refurbished Phoenix Cinema, the authority wide event will celebrate young people aged 11 to 25 through eight categories as well as those who have achieved Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards and Youth Achievement Awards. The AB Awards, is a partnership project between Argyll and Bute Youth Forum and Argyll and Bute Council’s Youth Services and has been made possible by the generous support of sponsors.
