S1/2 in Tobermory completed their RME conferences for this year with a day on the theme of Death and the Afterlife. This could have been a particularly difficult theme to work on but S1/2 participated in the day in a sensitive and thoughtful manner. The group started the morning together discussing why we have funeral services and went to the church where Mr Paton talked through some of the ways in which people deal with loss and how a funeral might look in the Church of Scotland and how funerals have changed over the years.
The group then split into smaller groups and researched how those from different religions and Humanists deal with death and what their beliefs may be regarding the afterlife. They created information boards to show what they had learned. In the afternoon the group took a more creative approach – some worked with Mrs MacNeilage to take apart the meaning of Psalm 23; a group worked with Ms Abrahams creating tattoos based on Dante’s vision of Hell; some created a Drama around the story of Orpheus and Eurydice; others worked on making a TV programme on the theme. Special mention must go to the Dance group who had to work alone but created a moving piece of dance to “Without You”.
