‘Groundforce Day – Port Charlotte Pre 5’…

Groundforce day Port CharlotteParents, children, staff and members of the local community have been hard at work this weekend developing our Pre 5 outdoor area. There was a great turnout and we are looking forward to day 2! The children and parents have planned the different areas they would like to have, these include a ‘Dig pit’, ‘Magical den’, ‘Story stage’ and ‘Mud kitchen’. Here’s to a great start to outdoor learning!

Dunoon Primary win UK Kodu Kup 2015!!

DPS Win table kodu 2015Hands up – which Scottish primary school took on 300 schools from all over the UK and won hands down?

Dunoon Primary School, who fought off the cream of game designers from Scotland, England and Wales to bring home the Kodu Kup, Microsoft UK’s computer programming competition- bringing the prize to Scotland for the first time.

Dunoon Primary wins prizes at Strathclyde University

DPS reallysmallscience verion 3Pupils from Dunoon Primary School were invited to the reallysmallscience on tour celebration event, at the University of Strathclyde, on the 17th of June. Primary 7 pupils, Siobhan Simpson and Leagha Campbell lifted the trophy for the best 3D entry for the ‘science in everyday life’ image competition. P7 pupil, Lucia Westwood-Phillips also received a medal for her drawing entry to the competition.

Sandbank Primary’s GM6/7 ended their topic on local history by setting up an exhibition in the Glenbranter Visitor Centre and Forestry Offices.

Health Week @ John Logie Baird

JLB Health Week 4 FunkyJohn Logie Baird Primary School children and staff took part in a variety of fun activities, to celebrate Health Week. The children’s activities included a presentation from SSPCA, Tae Kwon Do, Fruit demonstration and tasting by Waitrose, Big Pedal Cycling and Scooter event, the school sports day and nursery sports day, cardio tennis, rugby, mini kickers. Julie Smith of Funky Fitness put both children and staff through their paces with an energetic and fun filled day of fitness on the Friday to end the week in style.

Life’s a Beach at Rhunahaorine

Rhunahaorine Life's a Beach 2Children at Rhunahaorine have taken to the beach this term. With the help of funding from the GRAB trust we set up our Crocodile Camp where we learned how to make a campfire safely and cook damper bread and marshmallows. We learned how to tie knots which helped us to set up our seating area and make shelters.We learned about some of the creatures that live on the shore and played the limpet game to help us remember how they survive.

‘Boswell and Johnson’

Lochgilphead HS K Cockburn Art and Poet 1Lochgilphead High School senior Art and PDA students working with the poet Ken Cockburn and Graphic artists Nicole Heidtke and Stefan Baumberger on a ‘Boswell and Johnson’ project through Creative Arts Scotland.

The project will continue during the Summer holidays and finished result uploaded in August…………….

Furnace pupil wins a national art competition!

Furnace Abbie wins national art competitionEveryone at Furnace are delighted that our P7 pupil, Abbie Wallace, took the top prize in the nationwide TECHBOT Competition, after her artwork was selected from more than 4,000 entries. Abbie has won for her school a brand new ClassBuddy(tm) ‘Charge and Sync’ trolley from LapSafe® Products, with her artwork displayed as a graphic on the doors. Abbie has also won us 5 brand-new iPad Air’s complete with cases and an iPad and case for herself to take home. The iPad cases also display the winning artwork.

Park P3 Visit OHS Home Econonmics Dept!

Park PS OHS Home Economics 1On Friday 19th June Park Primary 3 visited the Oban High School Home Economics department as part of our interdisciplinary learning project on Food Journeys. While there we made our own individual pizzas using ingredients sourced from different countries around the world and then measured which pizza had ‘travelled’ the furthest! The entire visit was extremely well organised and the children found it a very enjoyable and valuable experience. They also enjoyed eating their pizzas!

Learning Centre @ Rockfield: We are going mad for DUCKS!

Rockfield PS LC Duck 1We have waited a very long 28 days for our duck eggs to hatch. Now they are finally here; and we think they are adorable! We have had so many pupils and staff members come to visit us and our ducklings. This term we have learnt about life cycles by hatching our ducklings and growing wonderful vegetables. It has been a fun term!

St. Joseph’s STEM Engineers!

St Josephs S.T.E.M 002Engineering was big on the agenda at St. Joseph’s this year with Mrs McLean leading developments in Technologies throughout the school. The children loved the creative aspect of engineering and were enthralled by the visits of many parents who are engineers giving presentations to the children about their jobs. Mrs McLean then took on the challenge of affording every pupil in the school the opportunity to apply for the STEM leadership award.

The Sunshine Room Social Skills Group Go Troll Hunting

Parklands School Troll hunting 2The pupils from The Sunshine Room Social Skills Group had a fantastic expedition to Inchcailloch Island, Loch Lomond to hunt for trolls. The boys and girl met with Fiona, the park ranger to look for signs of trolls on the island, while searching for trolls Fiona told them lots about the other animals, birds, insects, plants and flowers that live on the island. The group also had time for some toasted marshmallows on a camp fire (a trolls favourite treat) before playing some magical games on the beach.

Butterflies….at Garelochhead Primary

Garelochhead Butterflies 1Primary 1 and Primary 3/2 at Garelochhead primary have been looking after butterflies. They watched them grow from very tiny caterpillars, to huge big ones, before they turned into chrysalises. The butterflies took their time turning into butterflies and then they were set free. Primary 3/2 collected lots of natural things from the garden to make the butterflies at home in their habitat. The classes were very excited to see that the butterflies liked to eat fruit. Both classes enjoyed exploring the life cycle through observations of the real thing.

Scientists in the Making!

DPS Glasgow Scientific Centre 4P7 pupils from Dunoon Primary School recently visited Glasgow Scientific Services as part of their Science Interdisciplinary Study. The pupils had been learning about radiation and the Chernobyl disaster. They recently had Mr Tom Henry, retired Environmental Health Officer, visit their classroom to talk about the radiation monitoring and sampling that he carried out as part of his job. All the samples that Mr Henry took were analysed in Glasgow Scientific Services and so he accompanied the class on their trip.
