Very exciting day at Kilmartin P.S. Here’s what Rowan in P.7 says:
Today, 29th May, our class were invited through to the nursery by Mrs MacCallum to have a look at the amazing newborn chicks. Fortunately, we managed to go through just in time as we were able to watch the fourth chick hatch. The eggs have been in the incubator for 21 days, meaning that they were put in on the 9th of May.

New Arrivals at Sandbank Primary!
The pupils and parents of Sandbank Primary could hardly contain their excitement last week as four chicks hatched in the primary 1/2 class. For three weeks the children counted down the days eagerly awaiting their arrival. Finally on Sports Day, and to the delight of everyone, Sporty, Shelly and Fluffy hatched. The next morning the children arrived into class to find a crack appearing on another egg. Throughout the day regular updates were relayed around the school and at 3:15pm Skye finally hatched! JUNIOR SALTIRE AWARDS FINALISTS
Primary 6/7 at Port Ellen were learning about renewable energy and wave power and decided that we would make wave power devices for the Junior Saltire Awards. These awards are open to schools around Scotland who want to design and build their own wave powered electricity generating devices. As we already have lots of Marine renewables on Islay, with the Limpet in Portnahaven and the new tidal generator planned for the sound of Jura, we thought we should have a go.
Ulva School make Flowers in the Forest
The children and staff from Ulva Primary School had a brilliant time making big flowers and ‘planting’ them in the woodland at Calgary Art in Nature.
We were pleased to see the sun was shining on Friday as we headed off to Calgary with our waterproofs packed in our bags. When we arrived we met Symon and Kim from Vision Mechanics who were going to show us how to make the flowers. We had a lovely walk around the woodland looking at the Giant Heads and the other sculptures in the Forest.
Lismore Primary School: Healthy Body Week 13th to 17th May
The week started with a food themed day. The children found out about the different food groups that are necessary for a balanced diet. With the help of Hazel, each child made a healthy smoothie for their snack from a wide variety of different fruits including pineapple, mango raspberries and strawberries. Hazel also introduced a new salad bar at lunchtime where the children could try out different salad vegetables.

Disastrous Dining!
As part of our book study on ‘Billionaire Boy’ by David Walliams we had to organise, plan and help cook a themed lunch. We were making this lunch because in the book there is a character called Mrs Traffe. She is the school cook and makes horrid lunches like wasp soup, gerbils on toast, hair lasagne, brick cutlet, deep-fried cardboard and sweet cake.
The Beaver Academy
Ashfield Primary have been working alongside Oly Hemmings from the Scottish Beaver Trial to develop the links between the school and the beaver project. As the local school to the trial site, pupils, parents and staff were keen to make the most of this fantastic resource. The pupils have been guinea pigs for a new workshop being developed and have recently visited the trial site to view the beaver dam. The pupils are now the proud adoptive parents of Millie the beaver and will be following her progress as time goes on.
Islay and Jura Primary Schools Trip to Stirling
All the P6/7 children of Islay and Jura got together for a fantastic trip to Stirling last week! New friendships were made and old ones were resurrected as the children spent four days together learning about the history of Stirling Castle, the Wallace Monument as well as enjoying the engineering wonder of the Falkirk Wheel! The views over Stirling were magnificent.

St. Andrew’s Primary School had some very unusual visitors on Friday 10th May.
As part of our Eco School programme, we invited the Zoolab team to our school. Alannah from Zoolab introduced us to Justin the snake, Mercedes and Nibbler the rats, Fluffy the tarantula and many more interesting creatures. We enjoyed getting to know the animals and found out lots about mini-beasts, classifying animals, life-cycles and food webs.

HELP!
ELECTRONICS PROBLEM
Help! I am in desparate need of help. My name is Jason Baker and I am in Primary 7 at Port Ellen Primary School on Islay. My Endeavour project is to build from scratch and programme an electronic vehicle operated by remote control. I have the parts for a universal remote control and the rover vehicle. The rover has a switchboard kit. I need help making the remote control send a signal to the receiver on the rover so that it will pick up the signal and move according to the remotes commands.
Science Fun at Dervaig Primary School
Generation Science visit Luing Primary
Generation Science visited Luing Primary School, with their workshop Fizz, Boom, Bang! All of the children including pre 5; were to be scientists for the morning. After donning protective gear, the experiments began. The challenge was to make a cool, colourful reaction.
First of all the children had to discover whether liquids were acid, neutral or alkaline, matching up the colour on an indicator chart. After this they then mixed up liquids and powders, making fizzing and colourful potions. Continue reading Generation Science visit Luing Primary
Generation Science at Ashfield
Pupils at Ashfield Primary undertook a science mission yesterday to create a colourful chemical reaction with the help of the Rebecca and Laura from Generation Science and their Fizz, Boom, Bang workshop. The children were introduced to the properties of acids, alkalis and neutrals and witnessed a giant party popper going off in the classroom. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a hands on science experiment.
Fizz, Boom, Bang!
A big thank you to Generation Science who came into school this afternoon to deliver some stimulating science activities. The children thoroughly enjoyed their role as scientists carrying out exciting hands on science activities. Thanks to our potion explosion specialists, the children explored concoctions and mixtures covering colours, changes and solutions. This provided the children with a real world application of science which showed science can be fun!
Busy Bee Week – Lismore Primary School
Lismore Primary School held a very enjoyable “Busy Bee Week” from 22nd – 28th April.
The week began with a visit from Generation Science (Edinburgh International Science Festival’s Outreach programme) who performed their show – “Little Giants”. This was an interactive workshop where Buzzy, the giant honey bee and a bee keeper introduced the children to the amazing world of bees.

Magnet Workshop was a power to be reckoned with!
Achaleven’s P1/P4 and Dunbeg’s P1/P2 discovered the power of magnets today when Edinburgh International Science Festival’s Generation Science team brought their Marvellous Magnets workshop to Achaleven Primary.
We learnt all about magnetic attraction and repulsion, fields and poles and explored what effect magnetic forces have on the world around us.

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons
In spite of the weather and the cancelled boats our 3 intrepid travellers had a great time on their recent trip to the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons. They undertook keyhole surgery (I hope none of them actually have to operate on any of us in the future because they kept dropping things), watched a live operation online, attended a lecture on dentistry and learnt about the dangers of mosquitoes. They also enjoyed dining out, a little bit of shopping and a large hot chocolate.
