Primary 1 News

What a fantastic start to the week! This week in primary 1 we are learning the sounds ‘r’ and ‘m’. The children explore these sounds through our Jolly Phonics program and are encouraged to think of words that begin with these sounds. It would be helpful if you could think of some words at home that begin with these sounds too. This week the children have been looking at picture clues to predict what is going to happen in their story. They are encouraged to read their common words at the beginning of each reading lesson for example ‘Biff, Chip, mum, a, and the’.  Please ensure that all reading books are brought into school each day in the reading polly pocket.

This week in maths the children are learning all about capacity. They were encouraged to estimate which container would hold the most water and used vocabulary such as ‘full’, ‘empty’ and ‘half full’. The children loved guessing and counting out how many cups of water would fit inside each container.

We continue to explore our topic of caring, kindness and sharing. Today we looked at the story ‘Sharing a Shell’ by Julia Donaldson and discussed the important messages in the story. The children were asked to give an example of a time where they shared something and then they created their own shells. They used mixed materials including gems, bobbles, lollipop sticks and pencils to create their artwork. We are so proud of their work!

A gentle reminder that PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. Please ensure that your child comes into school on these days with a PE kit and a school jumper.

Primary 1 w.b.28.9.20

Primary 1 have had another busy couple of weeks. We have taken a break from learning new sounds and instead are consolidating our learning of the letters learnt so far (a,t,s,i,p and n). The children have been practising finding the letters on a magnetic letter board, writing them neatly and thinking of words with each sound at the start.
In maths we have been learning the numbers 1-10, how to count out amounts and write them correctly. This week we are moving on to a short series of lessons on measure. We will be measuring how long different objects are using everyday objects, for example how many shoes long is the desk. You can practise doing this at home. We will also be using balance scales to explore the concept of weight, looking at the language of heavier and lighter. This week we are handing out homework for the first time. Attached to this blog is a grid with a few activities you can do at home to extend your child’s learning.   Homework 28.9.20 number formation (homework) There are 4 starred activities which must be completed, the other 2 ideas are optional. If you would like to share the learning your child has done at home, we recommend that you post a photo and short comment on their learning journal. We are also handing out reading books this week. They are to be brought in to school every day since we will be reading with the children throughout the week. At the moment our reading focus is on book skills (identifying the front page, title and author and talking about what is happening in each picture). The reading books will be collected in on a Friday and new books issued on a Monday after a 72 hour quarantine.
A reminder that PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. Your child can come to school these days in PE kit with a school jumper.
Thanks for all your support. Please contact us if you have any questions.

What another fantastic week in Primary 1! We learned how to read, write and recognise the sounds ‘s’ and ‘I’ and explored this through our Jolly Phonics programme. We had the opportunity to think of words and animals that begin with the letter sounds and practised our ‘i’ on our igloos.  We were introduced to more characters in our ORT reading books and looked at the picture clues in our book to help us comprehend the text. During writing we learned to write about a time we felt excited and used our picture plan to help us with our writing. We are now beginning to use some of the sounds we have learned so far in our writing. We have also been learning the common words; I, in and it.

In maths we were consolidating the numbers 1-5 and practised forming them correctly and making sets of these numbers. We loved using playdough in the class to make these numbers too!

In health we focused on being responsible and included. We explored this through circle time and we even made our own paper chains! We created a class ‘kindness’ box and made pictures of kind things that we are going to do this week. We will keep this going in our classroom every day to encourage kindness across Primary 1!

Thank you for all of your continued support at home,

Primary 1 8.9.20

Good Morning.
The Primary 1 children are continuing to do well in school. We are impressed by how quickly they have settled into school life and picked up our routines, well done! We are not giving out formal homework just now but appreciate that many parents would like to support their children at home with the work we do in class. Therefore we will be posting a few ideas of activities you can do at home on the blog each week. If you would like to share your child’s work with us you can post a photo of it on the learning journals. We will be issuing letters about how to access the learning journals in the coming days.
This week in phonics we are learning the sounds ‘s’ and ‘i’. The children are learning to write these letters neatly and to think of words with these sounds at the start. At home you could try going on a ‘sound hunt’ around your house or garden looking for objects with these sounds at the start (stick, scissors, insect etc). We will also be starting ‘reading lessons’ this week. At the moment we are reading wordless books focusing on the characters in the story and using the pictures to describe what is happening. We will not be sending any books home and so if you would like to practise these skills at home why don’t you find a book in your house for your child to talk through. Look for the front cover, the title of the book and discuss the characters, the setting and what is happening in each picture.
In maths we are working on numbers 0-5, how to form them correctly, order them and count out amounts. At home you can play https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/gingerbread-man-game. All 3 sections; counting, matching and ordering will be good learning opportunities for the Primary 1s. Please also practise writing these numbers neatly. Number 2 and 5 are particularly difficult for children.
Reminders:
PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. Your child can come to school dressed for PE these days, however, we ask that they wear a school jumper on top of their clothes.
Please ensure that your child has a named water bottle in school each day.
It is really helpful if you name all your child’s clothing so that lost items can be returned.
Thank you for all your support

What another lovely week we’ve had in Primary 1. We’ve been continuing to focus on our emotions this week and we’ve been looking at our SHANARRI wellbeing indicators (safe, healthy, active, achieving, nurtured, respected, responsible and included). The children have enjoyed explaining their feelings during circle time activities and through drama experiences this week. They were also asked to create a picture plan of a time they felt sad and were encouraged to use some of the sounds they know in their writing. We started our North Lanarkshire Jolly Phonics programme this week and have been looking at the sounds ‘a’ and ‘t’. The children played games and were encouraged to read, write and think of words that begin with each sound. The children were introduced to the Oxford Reading Tree characters Kipper and Mum and will continue to explore this next week. In maths we have continued to work on counting from 0-20. We have been playing lots of counting games on the smart board in school and the children also learned how to form the numbers 2,3,4 and 5 correctly. This was explored by rainbow writing, painting, writing numbers on the whiteboard and in our new jotters. The children have been trying so hard with this. Well done everyone!

A reminder that we do outdoor PE on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Please send your child to school dressed for taking part in physical activity in the playground these days. It is also helpful to send a named water bottle in case your child get thirsty.
Thank you for all your support, please contact the office if we can be of any assistance.

Primary 1 are having a lovely week so far.
We are continuing our work on emotions and this week have learnt about feeling calm and love. The children have thought about different situations when they feel calm and some people and pets that they love. We will continue to discuss our feelings daily in class and will be encouraging children to find ways of managing them.
This week we are beginning our work on number. We will be learning how to count out and write neatly the numbers 0, 1 and 2. Please practise these numbers at home. Number 2 can be especially hard for children to write neatly.
We are also learning to hold a pencil correctly as we write letters and numbers. Please practise this at home, perhaps by writing your child’s name neatly a few times.
A reminder that we do outdoor PE on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Please send your child to school dressed for taking part in physical activity in the playground these days. It is also helpful to send a named water bottle in case your child get thirsty.

It has been lovely welcoming all the new Primary 1 children to school over the past week and seeing the Primary 2s return. The children are settling in well to school and are picking up routines quickly. At the moment we are encouraging the children to develop their friendships and social skills through lots of games and play activities. We are also learning about our feelings and emotions, using the story of ‘The Colour Monster’ by Anna Llenas. We are discussing different situations which make us feel different emotions and how we can manage our emotions well.
Tomorrow (Wednesday) will be the children’s first outdoor PE session with Mrs Ferguson. Please send your child to school dressed for PE. PE kit consists of a white T-shirt and black or navy shorts or trousers. Please make sure that your child has shoes they can run around in and a named water bottle to take outside with them. It is helpful if all clothes are named clearly.
Thank you for all your support so far. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns. We can be contacted through the school office.

Primary 1 – Farming SWAY

Good morning Primary 1!

We hope you’ve been enjoying taking part in some of the home learning activities this week. Can you believe that tomorrow is the last day of home learning before the summer holidays? We just wanted to say a huge big well done to all of the children in primary 1 for working so hard at home and sharing all of their excellent work with us. We have been so delighted to see how much you have all achieved and we are very proud of each and every one of you. We also wanted to thank all of the parents for the support you have given us over the last 12 weeks and we appreciate all you have done to support your child’s learning at home.

We would also like to share the SWAY we created for our farming topic this term. We have included lots of pictures and ideas from the children across primary 1 and have showcased lots of their hard work over the last few weeks. This is an excellent way to celebrate all of their achievements and show you their learning journey with this topic. We hope you enjoy! You can find a link to our SWAY below:

Hello everybody,

We hope you are well and are enjoying the last week of school before the summer holidays. Are you having fun with the virtual Disney trip activities on this week’s grids? What is your favourite activity that you have done so far?

Our focus for today’s blog is our Rights Respecting Schools Award. We are exploring Article 30. This article is all about minority or indigenous groups, culture, language and religion. In other words, every child has the right to learn and use the language, customs and religion of their family no matter where they live. Have a little look at the activities below and you could try to complete one of them over the next few days.

  • Can you find out how to say ‘Hello, how are you?’ in 3 different languages.
  • Do you know any traditional dances? Research these safely online with an adult and practise the steps.
  • Find 10 characters from your favourite books. Do they come from a range of cultures or are they all just like you?
  • Culture means traditions that groups follow like food, dances, song and clothes. Draw or write about what is important in your culture. Then think of someone who comes from a different culture and share safely with them what is important about culture for each of you.
  • Watch ‘If the World were a Village of 100 People’ to find out about people around the world.
  • Keep a food and drink diary for the week. What cultures do your food and drink come from? Which are your favourites?

If you have any questions please feel free to get in touch. Thank you for everything you are doing at home. Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Good morning Primary 1
How are you all? Can you believe that it’s the last Tuesday you’ll ever have as a Primary 1? This week you will be getting a letter telling you who your new teacher will be and about what your school week should look like. Therefore, we thought this would be a good opportunity for you to talk to the adults at home about what you are looking forward to in Primary 2, what you are nervous about and how you think Primary 2 will be different from Primary 1.
Listen to the PowerPoint below which talks about how school will be different due to COVID19 and then talk through the discussion points below.

transition to p2

Questions to discuss:
– What differences do you expect to see in the Primary 2 classroom?
– Where do you think you will hang up your coat?
– Where will you come into school as a Primary 2?
– What would you like to learn in Primary 2?
– What are you most excited about in Primary 2?
– What are you most nervous about in Primary 2?
– Who are you excited to play and learn with again?

Have a lovely day.

Good morning Primary 1

I hope that you have had a great time this week taking part in our Sports Day at home. I can’t wait to find out which house has won! If you haven’t already, please remember to update the online form with your score from each event. Here is a link to the spreadsheet:

What was your favourite activity?

Are there any you want to try again?

Why don’t you create your own sports day activities for your family to try over the weekend? Think about fun sports you can do in your back garden or in your Living room. You might want to see who can balance on 1 leg the longest or see who can hop the fastest around the garden? Remember you will need to keep scores and create a prize for the winner.

You can also log your information on Get Set Tokyo. Well done Primary 1, we met our target last week!!!

https://www.getset.co.uk/travel-tokyo

Alternatively, why don’t you try some of these super exercise videos in your house? It is so important to exercise every day: it keeps our heart healthy, our bones strong and stops us getting sick.

Have a lovely day and a fantastic weekend.

Good morning Primary 1s!

How are you today? We hope you have managed to do some learning, playing and relaxing this week. We have loved looking at your pictures from your sports days. Well done to you all! Your house teams will be so proud.

Since we have been finding lots of fun things to do at home over the past few months we thought it would be nice to read ‘Winnie and Wilbur Stay at Home’ on the Oxford Owl website. You can read this book with an adult and try to read the words that you can on your own. Once you have read the book you can have a discussion about it with an adult. You can think about all the fun things that you have decided to do at home and see if they are the same as Winnie and Wilbur. I really enjoyed reading this book and I hope you do too.

If you want to do this extra activity you can also let us know what you think of the book by commenting on this blog. We love hearing from you!

Just a quick reminder on how to get access to the book, go to https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk. Then click on ‘My class login’ at the top of the page and enter your teacher’s name and the password: Carmondean1

We hope you all have a fantastic Thursday.

Primary 1 – Home Learning 17.06.20

Good morning Primary 1!

I hope you have managed to complete some of the learning activities this week and are still enjoying learning from home. We know how hard you have all been working and thank you again to all of you for sharing your work with us on the Learning Journals. It makes us so happy to see how well you are all getting on at home. Remember to make time for lots of playing, relaxing and spending quality time with your family too!

Did you know that today is World Day? The World Day is an initiative from the United Nations to raise awareness global environmental issues such as the destruction of eco-systems, pollution, conservation, desertification and drought. This day is all about protecting our planet, sustainably managing its natural resources and taking urgent action on climate change.

We would like you to watch the following video child friendly video on climate change and then discuss some of the steps you can take at home to reduce climate change: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sv7OHfpIRfU

World Population Day 2020 – National Awareness Days Events ...

We would like to encourage you to switch off today and unplug electrical resources you have in your house. Maybe you could go outside and have a picnic today instead of using the cooker? Maybe you could play a board game instead of watching the TV? There are lots of different ways you can conserve energy. We would love to see some examples of you doing your bit to save the planet today on the Learning Journals! We can’t wait to see all of your creative ideas!

Stay safe,

Hello Primary 1.
How are you all? Are you keeping safe and healthy? Remember that this week is our sports day at home. We hope that you are managing to complete lots of the fun activities and are logging your efforts on the spreadsheet. I wonder which house will win?

This week we will be considering Article 2 for our Rights Respecting Schools Award. This article is all about discrimination. That is a big word which means that people are treated differently because of the way they look, speak, act or because of the place they live. That doesn’t seem fair, does it? We need to treat everyone kindly, the way that we would like to be treated. Have a little look at the slide below and try to complete one of these activities over the next few days.

There is a video linked on the slide. It tells the story of a flamingo who didn’t want to be pink anymore. By the end of the story she has learnt that everyone is beautiful in their own way and that we should celebrate our differences.

Thank you to everyone who is continuing to stay in contact with us through the Learning Journal, we love seeing all the fun things you are getting up to! If you have any questions about the activities or about your child’s learning then please get in touch, we are more than happy to help in whatever way we can.
Have a lovely day.

Good morning Primary 1!

Happy Friday! Well done for all of your hard work this week. We know you are all doing an amazing job at home and thank you again for continuing to share all of your fantastic work with us on the learning journals. It would be a great idea for you to finish off any of the activities on the home learning grids today as we will be posting new activities on Monday. If you have already completed the work and fancy an extra challenge then why not follow Rob Biddulph’s online art lesson? You can follow the link to Rob’s rainbow whale picture here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSUN5vR4QZY

He also has lots of other art videos on his channel that you can follow too! He has drawn aliens, dinosaurs, animals and lots of fun cartoon characters. His work is fantastic and easy to follow!

The Scottish Book Trust have also created a series of videos with authors live on demand. If you are interested in hearing some bedtime stories from your favourite authors then you can find some videos here:

Primary 1 11.6.20

Good morning
We hope that you are having a lovely week and are managing to complete some of the activities we set for you on Monday.
Each morning, Glasgow Science Centre are posting a live science lesson on their website. These lessons are great and cover a wide variety of topics. If you have time today, we would like you to watch the lesson from last Friday. In it, you will learn all about minibeasts and the differences between humans and invertebrates. After watching the lesson, why don’t you go outside either into a garden or a local green space and count the minibeasts you can see? Can you count them using tally marks?

GSC-At-Home-Bug-count (This is a bug count worksheet you can print out, alternatively, you could write 4 or 5 types of minibeast in your jotter and write the number you count beside it).

Mini beasts are important on a farm. They provide food for some animals, help to spread pollen to different plants and put nutrients back into the soil.
Bugs like to live in lots of different places and we can help to build them a safe home in our gardens. Here are some ways you can give bugs a helping hand…
– When clearing away dead plants in your garden, why don’t you keep some stems aside in a little bundle for minibeasts to live in?
– During your daily walk, can you find some dead woods or leaves for bugs to live in?
– If you are feeling very adventurous, you could make a bug hotel in your garden. Here are some photos of great examples you might want to copy.

As always, please don’t feel any pressure to do these additional tasks. They are only suggestions for if you are stuck for something to do! We hope that you are all keeping safe and healthy and that you are enjoying some family time after your school work is finished.
We are missing you lots

Primary 1 – Home Learning 10.06.20

Good morning Primary 1!

We would like to thank all of the boys and girls in Primary 1 that have completed some of the activities from UNICEF’s Rights Respecting Schools pack. We are using the photos you upload to the Learning Journals as evidence which we will put towards our re-accreditation later in the year. We would like you to have a look at this week’s Article, number 42 – Knowledge of Rights. What do you think is needed for every adult and every child to know about children’s rights? Choose one of the following activities to complete today:

  1. Article 42 says that all adults should know about rights. Why do you think this is important?
  2. Imagine that you didn’t know any rights and that all children everywhere have rights. How would you feel about that? Can you think of any problems children might face? Write a story called “Child with no Rights”.
  3. Do you know your ‘birthday right?’ This is a fun idea thought up by schools in the North East of England – look up, and remember if you can, the article with the same number as the day of the month you were born. Try to get all your family and friends to know their ‘Birthday Right’. Here are all the rights on one page.
  4. Watch the video on this Unicef page. Does it inspire you believe that the rights of children and young people are important? Having watched this, produce something creative (art, music, poetry…) entitled Children’s Rights Matter. Share your work with others.

Do you know children have rights? Have a look at the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. (With images) | Childrens rights, Children's rights, Child advocacy

We look forward to seeing all of your fantastic ideas on the learning journals.

Thank you for all of your support with this,
