Good morning Primary 1!
Mr Shanks has posted a list of activities on the blog which can be completed today whilst the schools are closed. Here are a few alternative ideas. Please don’t feel like you need to do all of these, if you manage a couple that would be great.
1. Take a walk in the snow/ play in the garden. Talk to an adult about what you can see, smell, feel, hear in the snow.
2. Write a few sentences about what you are doing on your day off to bring into school when we return.
3. Practice taking away from numbers up to 10. Either make up your own sums or you can use this website https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?f=TakeAway (note: you will need flash to access it)
4. Practise writing your sounds in the snow.
5. Continue reading you reading book and non-fiction book from your homework pack.
6. Practise the days of the week and numbers 1-10 in French. Here are some videos we use in class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA5jSbKd5cM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsEz58BblMY
Please feel free to comment below if you have any questions and you can post photos of what you get up to on the online learners journals.
Most of all… keep safe and have fun 🙂

We hope that you all had a lovely few days off last week. The children came back with lots of stories about what they got up to and have enjoyed writing about their time in class.
We are nearing the end of our dinosaurs topic this week. We enjoyed learning all about pterodactyls yesterday and tomorrow will be finding out facts about the stegosaurus. The children have been creating super fact files all about the different dinosaurs we are learning about. Their favourite has definitely been the T-Rex!
In our Health and wellbeing lessons we have been following a programme called ‘Bounceback’. The children have been learning about how to ‘bounce back’ from mistakes and disappointments in life. On Monday we made bounce back people who remind us that we can bounce back from hard times.
In maths we are continuing our work on subtraction and telling the time. Today we learnt how to tell a half past time on analogue clocks. Thank you for your help consolidating this learning at home.
Reminders:
PE is on Thursdays. Please ensure your child comes to school with a named PE kit.
Water bottles should only contain water and should be named.
This week your child’s homework contained a purple jotter with a sheet entitled ‘Time your climb’. The children have been shown how to complete this sheet, but please ask if you need any more explanation.
Thank you
Miss Christy, Mrs Harris and Mrs Oliver

Primary 1 have been having another busy week. We are enjoying our Dinosaur topic so far. The children are playing well in the dinosaur areas in the classroom pretending to be paleontologists searching for dinosaur bones. This week we have also acted out different dinosaurs in drama and made a sound map of a dinosaur land. Today we will be investigating dinosaur footprints.
In phonics, we have come to the end of our single letter sounds. The children are growing in confidence reading and writing short words. We will continue to practise this in the coming weeks before moving onto reading diagraphs (sh, ch, th etc). Thank you for all your help supporting your children with this learning at home.
This week you will have noticed that your child brought a non-fiction book home with them. Please read this book with you child and talk about how a non-fiction book is different from fiction. We will be doing work on this in class in the coming weeks.
In maths we are learning how to take away from numbers up to 5 and how to tell the time on analogue clocks. Thank you for practising at home.
Reminders:
– Please send your child to school with a named water bottle. This should only contain water.
– Homework folders should come to school every day so that we can read throughout the week.
Thank you

Primary 1 were very excited to welcome Craig Matheson a Polar Explorer to Carmondean yesterday morning. The children heard about his adventures in the Arctic and Antarctic, tasted some of the dried food he eats when away and tried on some of the clothes worn nowadays in the cold climates and 100 years ago when Captain Scott first went to the South Pole. The children particularly enjoyed seeing pictures of the animals Craig has seen as he explores.
This week we are going to be completing Polar experiments each afternoon in class. We will learn about food chains in the arctic, how adding salt to water affects density and how to keep warm in the cold.
We are also continuing our phonics programme and this week will learn j and v. Thank you for your continued work practising these sounds at home.
Reminders:
PE is now on a Thursday with Mrs Ferguson. Please come prepared for this with a named PE kit.
Water bottles should be brought to school every day. These should contain only water.
This week in your homework folder you will have received 2 Scots poems. Please learn 1 of these at home ready to perform to the class on Wednesday 24th January.
Thank you

The children now know all the songs and are enjoying singing them with the actions. Some children have learnt short dances to some of the songs and the children with speaking parts are learning when to say their lines. Please continue to practise your child’s parts at home.
Today is our St Andrews Day assembly. The children have been busy learning a Scottish song ‘I sent aff for cheese’ and will perform it infront of the school this morning.
In maths we are moving on to reading, writing and counting numbers to 20. We will be thinking about how we can structure a number in different ways using lots of resources in class.

Primary 1 are now well into their toys topic. We have a toy shop up and running in the classroom and this week we will be learning about the different forces which make toys work. This term’s big homework task was given out last week. Your child is to create a model toy for our toy shop from recycled materials. This toy is due on Monday the 27th November.
We are also busy practising our nativity. We have now learnt all the songs and are busy practising the actions to accompany them. We have also started rehearsing lines and dancing with some of the children. If your child has words to learn please practise them at home. We are encouraging the children to speak loudly and slowly when they deliver their line.
There are some exciting dates for your diary coming up in the next few weeks…
This Friday is Children in Need. Your child can come to school dressed in their pyjamas. Badges, wrist bands and colouring sheets are on sale throughout this week. Please see the email sent out on Friday for details of prices or speak to us.

Welcome back after the October holiday. We hope you all had a lovely break. This term our interdisciplinary topic will be ‘toys’. The children enjoyed bringing in their favourite toy last week and were all able to talk about it in front of the class and write about what they like to play with their toy in our writing lesson. This week we will be setting up our toy shop in the classroom role play area. So far we have made unicorns and this week we will make some teddy bears. This topic will teach the children about money, materials and forces.
In maths we are learning to add 2 sets of objects together. The children have made lots of progress recognising numbers and counting out sets which is aiding them as they move onto addition strategies.
We have also started learning the nativity songs in class this week. We will be practising these songs regularly in class and will give out speaking parts in the next week or so.
