Welcome back after the Christmas Holidays. We hope that you all had a lovely break.
We had a good first week back. The children began to learn about Dinosaurs, the interdisciplinary topic for this term. An egg was delivered to Primary 1 for the children to look after with a note from Professor Rex. We decided that it was a dinosaur egg and so the children have started learning about dinosaurs so they can look after the egg better.
In maths this week we will be learning about the months of the year and about clocks and how to read the o’clock time. Any help you can give your child in learning the months of the year and spotting clocks around the house would be greatly appreciated.
Reminders:
This term we will be doing outdoor PE on a Monday and indoor PE with Miss Inglis on a Thursday. Please remember to bring a named PE kit for these sessions.
Homework will resume again this week. The children will be getting 2 Scots poems home with them today. Please choose 1 poem to learn by Wednesday 18th January. Each child will recite their chosen poem in class on this day. One child will be selected from each class to perform in front of the school on the Friday.
Every child took home their inside gym rubbers for Christmas. Please remember to bring indoor shoes back into school as soon as possible.

Primary 1 have been settling in well to school routines over the past 2 weeks. The children are enjoying getting to know their new classroom and the wider school environment and are making lots of new friends in their class.
Last week primary 1 began learning phonic sounds s, a, t and p. The children have learnt how to say each sound and how to form each letter. Some pupils can also spot the sound within short words, very impressive! This week each child should receive sound cards for s, a, t and p home in their homework folder to practise at home.
In maths, primary 1 have been focusing on numbers 1, 2 and 3. The children’s counting is very good and so we are focusing on number formations. The homework task for maths this week is to practice writing 1, 2 and 3.
This week primary 1 will be continuing to learn more sounds and numbers. We will also be completing a display on how to be healthy to go up in the hall. This forms part of the government’s Getting It Right For Every Child initiative, and each stage is focusing on a different aspect of SHANARRI ( safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible and included) in the PSD fortnight.

Last week primary 3 learnt all about Poland as part of our ERASMUS project. Over the week the children had the opportunity to learn a Polish dance which we videoed to share with the partner schools. The children also tried a variety of Polish foods and created a Polish menu. We all liked the Polish biscuits and wafers but some children were not so keen on pickled gherkins, a famous Polish delicacy! Throughout the week the children created a lot of artwork which is now displayed in the classroom. We annotated maps, made Polish coat of arms, created Polish flags and drew famous Polish stories. The children all enjoyed learning about Poland and were very interested in exploring a different culture.
This week there will be no homework. PE will be as normal (Tuesday for both classes, Monday form Miss Rafferty’s class and Wednesday for Miss Christy’s class).
Thank you for your support
Miss Christy and Miss Rafferty.

Primary 3 have had a busy few weeks! Last Monday was our Knights and Castles Assembly. Thank you to all the parents who came to support the children. I’m sure you’ll agree that the children did a great job. The children with lines spoke loudly and clearly and all remembered their lines, and the actors and actresses did a great job representing life in different rooms in a castle.
The medieval banquet on Friday was a huge success. The children looked great in their costumes and behaved beautifully! Thank you to everyone who was able to come and support the children.
This week is assessment week in Primary 3. All work will be done in a special ‘assessment jotter’. The work done this week should provide a ‘snapshot’ of where your children are in their learning.
PE times have changed as of this week. Miss Rafferty’s class will have indoor PE on a Monday and outdoor on a Tuesday. Miss Christy’s class will have outdoor PE on a Tuesday and indoor PE on a Wednesday.

Primary 3 w.b. 1st February
Well done primary 3 for your performance of Katie Bairdie last Tuesday. Your singing was very loud and clear and the audience were very impressed. Well done also to Joe and Leila for your final recitation of ‘Snaw’ on the afternoon.
Primary 3 are really enjoying the knights and castles topic. Last week the children learnt about the clothes Kings and Queens used to wear. They created a self portrait as a King or Queen which will hang in our classroom Great Hall when it is finished. Primary 3 also learnt about the weapons knights would use when attacking or defending a castle. We’re glad we don’t live in medieval times!
In Maths, primary 3 are finishing off their work on times tables. So far the children have learnt the 2,3,4,5 and 10 times tables. This week we will finish off this work. Thank you for all the practice you are putting in at home.
This week primary 3 will be continuing their knights and castles topic by writing about an attack on a castle and by completing a challenge in small groups. We look forward to sharing these with you at parents’ consultations next week. If you have any junk we could use for our challenge, please bring it in on Tuesday.
Thanks for your support.

Well done to everyone who learnt their Scots poem last week. We were very impressed by the confident and clear delivery given by all the children which made it difficult to chose 2 winners from each class to go forward to the Burns Assembly on Friday. Well done to Leila, Sophia, Joe and Isla for being selected; you performed well and were great representatives of Primary 3. Joe and Leila were the winners from the competition for primary 3.
Primary 3 have been learning their times tables in Maths. So far the children have learnt and practised the 2,5,10 and 3 times tables and this week will be learning the 4 times table. Thank you for the practice you are putting in at home for this, it makes a lot of difference to the children’s confidence.
In our Knights and Castles topic, primary 3 have already learnt about the parts of a castle and the progression of becoming a knight. This week we will look at medieval weapons and will create a self portrait as a king or queen to hang in our great hall!
On Tuesday, primary 3 will be performing ‘Katie Bairdie’ at the Scots afternoon. All children must be in full school uniform for this.
