P1/2 Performed last week!!

Last week P1/2 worked hard in all areas of the curriculum.  In maths we continued to work on our addition and subtraction and on looking carefully at the signs in sums!  We practised taking away zero and trying not to let the sums confuse us!

In literacy we learned some new sounds wh, j and y.  We listened carefully to words and tried to build them on our vecro boards and also practised reading words using our blending skills to sound them out!

As part of our emotion works, we watched the ‘very’ advert where the little girl gives out gifts to people who are sad or lonely.  We watched the advert and thought about how some of the people in it might be feeling and then made some boxes of happiness to give to our families when they are feeling a bit sad. We drew pictures of things that would cheer them up and came up with lots of great ideas including photos, love hearts, teddies, cameras, flowers, chocolates, puppies and books!

Finally a big well done to all the classes involved in the nativity.  Everyone sang their socks off (especially the P3 choir!) and the P2 narrators spoke very clearly into the microphones which helped the primary ones know when they had to come onto the stage and when they had to say their lines.  A big thank you to the support staff who helped out with the costumes and with the backdrop – your help is much appreciated.  Well done primary one for your super nativity performance and a big thank you to all the parents and family members who were able to come along and be a super audience.  Looking good!

Super Nativity !!!!

Well done Primary One for your super nativity performance! You all sang so nicely and remembered lots of your words!  Your    costumes looked super !

Thank you to all the parents and family that came to watch!

We have also been working hard learning our wh, j and y sounds. We have also been continuing to work on our blending skills. In writing, we wrote some super letters to Santa. Miss Rodford thinks that Santa will be very busy!

In maths we have been learning how to take away 0 and have been using cubes to help us!

Brilliant Book Week!

This week in maths, Primary 1/2 have been practising their adding skills independently whilst learning about subtraction at the teach table.  The boys and girls know that subtract means to take away and have even learned another word for subtract – minus.  We made minus monsters out of the subtract sign and are trying not to get muddled up between add, subtract and equals signs!  We have been using cubes to help us to take away and are getting quite good at it!

In sounds, we have been learning the ‘oa’, ‘ng’ and ‘w’ sounds – ‘oa’ lives in the vowel house and you need a tunnel mouth to say it properly, ‘ng’ is an orange sound made at the back of your mouth and ‘w’ is a loud red sound made with your lips.  We have been working on our blending skills by playing bingo and sounding out words using the racing car tracks and stretchy snake to help us blend the sounds together and read the words.

In topic work we looked at some different toys and thought about what materials they were made of.  We felt the toys and discussed how they felt and what we thought they were made of.  We spotted these materials – wood, plastic, metal, foam and fabric.  100_8145Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who were able to make it along on Friday to receive their Book Bug Bags and to see the children working on different literacy and numeracy activities related to the books for Scottish book week.  We really enjoyed having you there to help and to be able to share our favourite stories from the bags with you.  I hope you all enjoy reading the stories and using your magnetic numbers at home.

Looking forward to more fun next week Primary 1/2.  Well done everyone!

Wonderful Work in Primary 1/2

P1/2 have worked very hard this week on counting groups of objects and then adding them together.  We can recognise the add and equals sign and have been learning how to write addition sums.  We have been practising locking the big number in our head to help us count on to quickly find the answer e.g. 5+3 – we lock the 5 in our heads and then count on 6,7,8.  We are getting better at this!

In literacy, we have been busy learning the r, l and ai sounds!  Here is a little clip of us singing along to the ai song.  We hope that you enjoy it!

To help us with blending our sounds to read words we have played some fun games at the teach table this week.  We played a fun game called ‘Win it or Bin it!’ where we rolled three dice to make a word.  We then sounded out our word and decided if it was not a real word we would bin it and if it was a real word we would win it!  It was fun and we made up some funny nonsense words!  We also played BOOM where we picked words out of a bag and used our blending skills to try and read the word.  If someone picked out a BOOM card the game blew up and was over.  The winner was the person or persons with the most cards.  We have also been working on forming all of our letters correctly.

On Thursday, we all dressed up in yellow or something spotty and made a donation to help raise money for Children in Need.  Well done!

Superstars in P1/2

Another busy week in P1/2.  In literacy this week we learned some new sounds – z, ee and oo.  We worked on reading and writing these sounds and on forming our sounds correctly in handwriting.  We are getting better at blending the sounds to read and make words and will continue to work on this next week.

We have been practising transferring our phonics skills to our writing work and have produced some super stories related to the story ‘Shark in the Park’.  We imagined that we were in the park with a telescope and wrote about what we could see.  We have been trying hard to include a capital letter, full stop and clear finger spaces and we managed lots of sounding out on our own this week.  Get ready to be impressed!

Last week the children learned the sound ‘g’.  To help us remember the sound all of the children designed their own pair of glasses and modelled them as they left school today.  Looking good P1/2!!

In maths we have been practising counting groups carefully so that we can work out how many there are all together.  We have also been trying very very hard to form our numbers correctly and the right way round.

We also took part in some outdoor maths where we collected and then recorded how many different coloured leaves we found in the playground.  We were able to lay out the leaves in a graph and talk about the most popular and least popular leaf colour.  We found that there were fewest red leaves and that the brown leaves were very popular!

In our topic work we have had some in-depth conversations about toys.  We sorted a basket of items under the headings toys and not toys and we disagreed politely over the iPad as some people thought it was a toy because you can play games on it, while others thought it was not a toy because you had to pay for apps and type in a password to use it.  Great ideas and discussion which we have recorded in our class floorbook.

Finally, thank you to all the parents who have already been working hard to help the children learn their lines for the nativity.  We were so impressed this afternoon to hear quite a few children say their words without any help!  Keep up the good work boys and girls and parents – please leave us some feedback!  We would love to hear what you think about our work!

Super work in Primary 1

Miss Rodford has been very impressed this week with Primary One’s adding and blending skills!

In maths, we have been busy learning about the addition and equals symbol. We have been using dice to create our own addition sums! On Thursday, we enjoying going outdoors for a maths lesson on data handling. We created a super pictogram using colours of leaves. We discovered that the playground has mostly brown leaves in it!

In Literacy, we have been working hard on our blending and spelling of three letter words. Miss Rodford thinks we are getting much better!  In writing we read the story called ‘ Shark in the Park and we had to pretend that we were Timothy Pope and say what we could see in the park.  We thought of and wrote some super sentences using  captial letters, full stops and finger spaces!

We have started to practise for our Nativity performance and songs! If you have any words please remember to practise them at home! Well done Primary One!

If you have any comments about our learning please feel free to leave one!
