World of Work

Primary 1b worked really hard during our World of Work Week and enjoyed dressing up as different jobs.  Can you guess the jobs we do?!

We were also very lucky to have Mrs Whiteman come in to tell us all about her job of Support Worker.  She told us all about what she does in her job and shared some of the skills that she needs to use.  We asked lots of good questions and thoroughly enjoyed her visit.  Thank you for coming into speak to us.

What’s the Time P1b?!

In maths, we practised matching number names to pictures and numerals – our sounding out skills are helping us to do this.  We have also been working hard to form our numbers neatly and correctly and have been using our number lines to help us do this.  We worked on our number stories to 5 and used our screening cards to hide some cubes so that we could use different strategies to work out how many were hidden.

We have also began learning to read o’clock times on both digital and analogue clocks.  We made our own clocks to help us with this.

In topic work we received another letter from the dragon and he even bought us one of Cinderella’s glass slippers.  We had a challenge to make another shoe for Cinderella and had to work with a partner and follow a design brief to do this.  Our shoes had to measure 10 cubes long, have a strap and they had to include some sort of pattern.  They look fantastic!

Out in structured play we used the construction to build a castle for the dragon and enjoyed playing snakes and ladders and dressing up in the role play area.  We also got very creative and enjoyed using a variety of media to create our own masterpieces.

Finally, we enjoyed using our skills in the gym hall to work together with P1a to complete a variety of Fairytale circuits.  We were doing step ups on the bench and pretending to climb the beanstalk, we were jumping the hurdles and pretending that we were on our horses, we balanced quoits on our heads for our crown training, we threw beanbags in the hoops and pretended these were Jack’s magic beans being planted, we balanced and walked across the bench pretending that this was the bridge from the three billy goats gruff.  It was soooooooo much fun!

Successful Learners in P1b

In maths this week we have been working hard to work out all the stories of 5 using lots of different concrete materials including cubes and magnets.  We made our own number stories of 5 craft and used paper fish to help us!  We have also measured using non-standard units such as lollisticks, cubes, paperclips and match sticks.

In literacy we have been spelling words, generating rhyming words and working hard to slide our sounds together to help us to read simple words.

Well done to everyone for working hard to learn and recite their Scottish poems.  Francesca was selected to recite her poem at our Scottish assembly and represented P1b really well.

Finally, great fun was had in the structured play area.  We had construction which we used to build beanstalks, we had dressing up, we practised our turn taking skills when playing snakes and ladders and enjoyed getting very creative at the art table.

Snow much fun in P1b!

What an exciting week we have had in P1b.  It all started on Monday when we arrived in school to find glittery footprints and a letter which was left by a friendly dragon.  He was asking if we could rebuild Fairyland in our classroom as it is disappearing and as lots of people are not reading Fairytales anymore no-one is believing in Fairyland.  We were so shocked that a dragon had been in our class but are excited to read lots of fairytales and rebuild Fairyland to help him.

In maths this week we practised our number stories of 4 and learned about measuring.  We spoke about all the different things that you can measure and had a go at measuring using cubes.  We learned that you have to use all the same size of cubes when measuring and have to make sure that the cubes are touching with no gaps.  We worked with a partner to draw around each others feet and measured the length of these using cubes.

We worked together in groups during reading routes and looked at different types of text.  We learned about bold and italic text and are looking out for these in our books.

In structured play we enjoyed dressing up in the fairyland castle, used construction materials to build beanstalks, practised spelling words and our names using the letters and made some stars to practise our ‘ar’ sound.

Finally, we got a lovely surprise when Badger the Mystical Mutt visited us on Thursday afternoon and delivered replies to the letters we wrote to him before Christmas.  We were very excited to see him and some of us enjoyed having pizza and listening to some of his stories after school with our grown-ups!

A busy start to the year in P1a

Happy New Year!

P1a have settled back in to school well after the holidays and have worked hard this week.

We have enjoyed starting using the reading books this week and are looking forward to developing our skills this term.

In maths we have been looking at the stories of 2 and 3 and really impressed Mrs Thomson with how well we worked on these.

We also created days of the week boards that we will bring home next week.

The highlight of the week was getting to use the Beebots and watch them follow our direction instructions!  We look forward to using them again soon!

Can ‘t wait to see what adventures we will have next week!!

Happy New Year from P1b

P1b have settled back into things really well and have had a very busy week.  In maths we have been learning all about the number stories of 2 and 3 and have enjoyed using concrete materials to try to find all the number stories.  We have also been learning about the months of the year and have been busy sequencing the days of the week.

In literacy, we have enjoyed learning about the characters in our reading books and are loving taking them home to share with our families.

We have enjoyed learning about directions this week and had to use our listening skills in the hall to follow directions like 4 steps forward, 1 step backwards, 2 steps left and face the opposite direction.  We were so good at these that we used our direction skills to programme the Bee-bots to move in different directions.  It was so much fun!

In structured play on Thursday we enjoyed designing our days of the week boards, playing with the construction and the animals, programming Bee-bots, making and serving food in the restaurant and making pictures with the shape and peg boards.

Looking forward to next week already!

Successful Learners Impressing in P1b

This week we have been learning our new sounds sh, ch and th.  We have been practising reading and writing the sounds and our tricky words.  We have also been working hard using the coathangers and the velcro mats to spell different words and to make sentences.

In maths, we have been practising our addition and have been learning all about subtraction.  We know that this means the same as take away or minus.  We made some minus monsters and have been using the cubes and counters to help us take away.  We have also been working on our number talks and have been sharing how we worked out or answers with others.

In structured play, we enjoyed playing with the lego and using the tools to build.  We also enjoyed working in small teams to run the Bankton Restaurant.  It was very busy today with lots of phonecalls to reserve tables.  The children even had to deal with some unhappy customers who were complaining!

Keep up the good work next week!

P1b Update……..

Over the past couple of weeks we have been continuing to work hard to learn lots of new sounds.  We have been talking about where in the mouth they are made and what colours they are.  We have also been learning how to form them correctly and have been making some things at the craft table that begin with these sounds.

We are also working on sliding our sounds together to help us read and spell words.  We are getting really good at this!  We are continuing to work on reading and writing our tricky words too.

In maths, we have worked on estimating and have been practising writing our numbers to ten correctly.  We have also been adding two groups together, sequencing numbers to 20 and jumping on the number line to add one or two more.

Last week, we enjoyed our ‘spotty walk’ for children in need.  It was great fun walking with our buddies.

Our day was finished off today when Badger the Mystical Mutt made a special appearance during our assembly.  We listened to chapter 1 from one of his books this morning and enjoyed drawing pictures of him and acting out some parts of the story.  We were so surprised to see him at assembly today!  We can’t wait to read more of his chapter book next week!

Shape Experts in P1b

Yesterday in P1 we learned all about 2D and 3D shapes.  We looked at how many sides, corners and faces the shapes have and we enjoyed making shape patterns, using stencils to draw the shapes, playing a shape matching game, building with the 3D shapes and the feely bag game where we had to put our hand in to feel the shape and guess which shape it was!

Out in the structured play area we used the construction to build our own 3D shapes.  Some of us worked on our own, or with a partner and even in a team!  It was so much fun!

We also had fun in the newly opened restaurant in the structured play area.  We served customers, made reservations and cooked up some tasty cuisine!
