English

Welcome to English!

English is an incredibly important subject in school. English will give you the tools to communicate with and understand others, fight for yourself and others in a way that will last forever, and enjoy the creative works of millions upon millions of people. Studies show that reading or listening to emotional stories makes you a better person (specifically more observant, compassionate, and emotionally responsive), but only if you understand the stories.

S1 – S3

In the BGE courses (S1-S3), we cover a variety of texts mediums like books, plays, and films. Students will often have the option of choosing which book, play or film we study. In addition to analysing and understanding written and visual texts, we will also be learning how to create some texts ourselves. Students will create autobiographies, critical essays, short stories, poems, and personal narrative essays throughout their first three years.

S4

In their fourth year, students will focus on skills and content that will enable them to pass their National 4 or National 5 course. Some aspects for this course change from year to year, so I recommend checking Teams (Files à Class Materials à Course Outline) for specifics. That said, a general outline is below:

National 5: RUAE, Critical Essay (on a text of their choice), Critical Reading (poetry questions), a written Portfolio piece, and speaking/listening literacy

National 4: Creation and Production, Analysis and Evaluation, Literacy (reading, writing, listening, speaking), and an Added Value Unit
