Understanding the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF)

What is the SCQF?

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) is a system used to compare the wide range of qualifications available in Scotland. It has 12 levels, which indicate the level of difficulty of a qualification, with Level 1 being the least challenging and Level 12 the most challenging

 How Does the SCQF Work?

  • Levels: Each qualification is assigned an SCQF level, which helps to understand its complexity and the skills required.
  • Credit Points: These indicate the amount of learning required to achieve the qualification. One SCQF credit point represents 10 hours of learning.

Benefits of the SCQF

  1. Clarity and Understanding: Helps parents, learners, and educators understand the value and level of different qualifications.
  1. Flexibility: Supports learners in planning their education and career paths by showing how different qualifications relate to each other.
  1. Recognition of Prior Learning: Allows for the recognition of skills and knowledge gained outside formal education, such as through work or life experiences
  1. Lifelong Learning: Encourages continuous learning and development by making it easier to see how different qualifications can build on each other.

How is the SCQF Helpful for Your Child?

  • Educational Pathways: Helps students and parents make informed decisions about subject choices and future qualifications.
  • Career Planning: Provides a clear framework for understanding how school qualifications can lead to further education and career opportunities.
  • Transferable Skills: Recognises a wide range of learning experiences, ensuring that all skills and knowledge are valued.
