Curriculum

Broad General Education

In S1 you will study chemistry within the context of our Universe’s past, present and future as part of our S1 Science course. Alongside investigating key concepts in chemistry, you will explore current issues and developments and develop important scientific literacy and numeracy skills.

In S2, you will continue to explore chemistry as a discrete science. You will be taught by a subject specialist and will delve deeper into important areas of chemistry. You will learn about The Magic of Mendeleev whilst exploring the periodic table, the atom, and elements and compounds. You will also investigate the properties and reactivity of Acids and Alkalis.

In S3,  you will have chosen to specialise in chemistry. You will continue to develop an understanding of key concepts in chemistry including Rates of Reactions, Bonding in Compounds, Metals, and Acids and Bases.

Senior Phase

In S4, you will study the following areas of Chemistry under various topics at National 3, National 4 or National 5 level.

  • Chemical changes and Structure
  • Nature’s Chemistry
  • Chemistry in Society

The Higher Chemistry Course develops learners’ curiosity, interest and enthusiasm for chemistry in a range of contexts. The skills of scientific inquiry and investigation are developed throughout the Course, and the relevance of Chemistry is highlighted by the study of the applications of Chemistry in everyday contexts.
