Primary 5 Garden Project
Last week, Primary 5 wrote letters to staff at Springbank and Mr MacArthur at the Garden Shop asking if they could kindly help out with their garden project. Very quickly, we got barrels from Springbank Distillery and plants and flowers from the Garden shop.

Achahoish Art Exhibition
This term our art project has been about Our Identity and what we have in Common. During this learning we took lots of photographs of our favourite things at school – in the class room and the playground – and at home. We took photos of our families, our toys, our pets and our bedrooms.
Essay Success – What does ‘sustainable living’ mean to you?
Each year the Trust for Sustainable Living organises a global essay competition, which this year invited schoolchildren to outline their ideas for sustainable living and the steps needed for societies to achieve them. This year 73 countries participated and essays were received from 1,094 children. We had several finalists from Port Ellen and in July Asher travelled down to Oxford to attend the international schools debate, which was attended by children from 23 countries.

Auchindrain / Achadh an Droigheann
On the last week of term, June 2014, the pupils of Sandbank Gaelic Medium Unit visited Auchindrain as part of their local history project and Crofting Connections work. They had brainstormed a set of questions that they wanted to ask the curator, Mr Bob Clarke, which would help us to understand the forces of change in the lives of local people through the last couple of centuries. Mr Clarke took us on a tour of the houses, telling us about some of the inhabitants and their way of life. We learned so much that we would not be able to write it all down in one report!

Bunessan War Memorial
The P5,6,7 class in Bunessan Primary have worked hard to raise money to refurbish the War Memorial which stands just outside their playground. The children have been completely overwhelmed by the support they received for this project and last week stage one of the refurbishment was completed when Oban Memorials were able to clean the stone and repaint the letters. Ross Kirsop kindly donated the scaffolding and the Fire Brigade made sure that there was enough water for the pressure washer.
Roots of Empathy at Dunoon Primary
This session, Primary 3 have been involved in an exciting new initiative called Roots of Empathy. Throughout the year there have been weekly visits from the instructor Ailsa Dominic, Early Years & Family Support Worker and every three weeks a visit from a mother and baby, Kym and Harris Byron.

Victorians in Rothesay
P5/6 have been studying the Victorians this term and we have found that Rothesay was very much developed by the Victorians. We worked with Paul Duffy from Brandanii Archaeology and Heritage to explore the town. We studied maps from as early as the 1350s to see the changes in Rothesay. We all went out for a walk around town with Paul to see all the Victorian influences. Continue reading Victorians in Rothesay
News from Furnace and Minard
Joint sports day at Minard
The children at Minard and Furnace Primaries enjoyed a lovely afternoon of sporting activities at Minard Primary school on Wednesday the 18th. Organised by our PE teacher, Mrs Floyd, the children were split into four teams and took part in a variety of events including ‘Jimmygymnastics’ ‘water archery’ and the space hopper relay!
Small Isles Primary win Community Archives and Heritage Group award
On March 26th Small Isles Primary heard that the school had been nominated (as part of the Jura Lives project) for the Community Archive and Heritage Group Inspiration Award. On 12th June, it was announced at the annual conference of the Community Archive and Heritage Group that Jura Lives has been named Community Archives and Heritage Group Overall Winner 2014, and that Small Isles Primary’s Community Cafes received the ‘inspiration’ award.

Exciting News from St. Muns!
St. Mun’s Pupils Awarded Blue Peter Green Badge
The Rolls Royce Science Project, ‘If You Go Down In The Woods Today’, has definitely inspired a number of children in the school. None more so than 3 Primary 7s, Leonie Cuddahy, Ewan McIntosh and Scott Stewart, who decided to write to Blue Peter and tell them what they had been up to over the course of the last year.
Oban High and the Digital Commonwealth 2014
The nationwide Digital Commonwealth project run by UWS, focuses on lowering the threshold for involvement for individuals and groups so that they can be empowered to exploit creative tools and technologies to tell their stories, digitally. The project aim is to involve every Local Authority in Scotland in the digital reporting of the Commonwealth themes in the run up to the Queen’s Baton Relay. Hedgehog House at Garelochhead Primary School
P1 in Garelochhead Primary School have been extending the accommodation in the Anniversary Garden to include a Hedgehog House. Some distance from the newly opened hotel, in a corner so as not to upset the guests, they constructed a home for Hedgehogs. Using materials found in the garden and some recycled waterproof resources the children set to work enthusiastically, so much so that we now have two houses.
Look out birds, you will be next.

SCIENCE IN ACTION
Kilchrenan Primary pupils have been learning about the science of plant with Mrs Love, and now it is time to put their new knowledge into action and develop some practical science skills. They selected a range of vegetables and fruit for their new mini greenhouse: two types of tomato, strawberry, garlic, beetroot, mini cucumbers, cabbage and more. They took time to reassess the state of planters around the school. Some have been thrown out and new ones purchased and planted with differing types of plants to attract different types of insects, all to increase biodiversity in the school grounds. PORT ELLEN HOLDS FINANCE WEEK FAIR
This week was finance week at Port Ellen and all the classes have been involved in learning about money, finishing in a finance fair on Friday Morning. Primary 1&2 have been learning about banks and spreadsheets, and have even started saving their money up for the summer holidays. They ran a bank at the exhibition and showed they could count change, and had even made their own piggy banks. Primary 2&3 had made commonwealth animal banks, which included a wonderful anteater and Kiwi bank.
Bowmore Primary 2/3’s Learning Festival
On Friday 25th April, a very excited P2/3 hosted a Learning Festival for their families. This was a fantastic opportunity for the children to share their learning about Homecoming Scotland. They proudly presented their personal projects, teaching their visitors about the island’s many distilleries, Scottish wildlife, dancing, musical instruments and food. There was even an opportunity to taste some shortbread which a couple of girls had baked! It was a very successful afternoon which our parents very much enjoyed.

Young Art Talent Emerging in DGS
Corrie MacDonald, S2 pupil at Dunoon Grammar School proudly presents Head Teacher Mr. Mitchell with a piece of original artwork to hang outside his office. Corrie finds some aspects of the curriculum very challenging and does a lot of his learning in the learning centre. But, amongst other things, Corrie has a real talent for art.
Bunessan Easter Fun Run
Children in the P5,6,7 class of Bunessan Primary School have been busy raising money to restore the local war memorial which stands just outside the playground. They decided to take part in the local Easter Fun Run and raised money by collecting from spectators. The children have been quite overwhelmed by the support they have received for this project and are well on the way to eventually exceeding their target. Their hard work and dedication will ensure that the memorial survives into the next century.
Kilmartin Tie-Dye Enterprise Project
The children at Kilmartin P.S. showed off their new tie-dyed t-shirts at the recent Mid Argyll Music Festival. Who wants to perform in boring navy school sweatshirts when you can brighten everyone’s day with a touch of the Caribbean? As part of the Cloth Uncut project, the children have screen printed patterns after looking at a variety of fabrics from African countries, woven their own tartan with lace and ribbon to represent Cyprus and finally learned how to tie-dye after looking at Caribbean fabrics.
Southend goes back in time
Pupils in the P5-7 class have been studying the Highland Clearances and Scottish Emigration through the novel, The Desperate Journey by Kathleen Fiddler. This inter-disciplinary project has brought together drama, art, music and literacy as well as learning about the lives of the Highland people 150 – 200 years ago. Model crofts were made of clay then thatched using dried grass and rashes from the fields.
