The children at Minard Primary School have been using their grounds to enhance their learning. Recently they have been hard at work designing a trim trail round the playground using natural resources. The children do laps at least three times a week and then convert the metres into kms then into miles. Next, they mark their progress by plotting the joint distance travelled on a map of Scotland. They hope to reach John O’Groats by the summer holidays! (They’ve reached Cairndow so far.)

Colgrain Blitz
Primary 6/7 pupils at Colgrain are currently learning about the events of The Clydebank Blitz. They were shocked to return to their classroom after lunch to discover that the school had been hit by a stray bomb! To protect themselves from any more possible attacks they spent the afternoon working under their desks. The children worked together to produce ARP reports on the damage sustained and produced poetry based around their feelings of being caught up in the Blitz.
Kirn’s P6/5 are Leaders of Learning at the Science Centre
Primary 6/5 visited the Science Centre today – but not just as a fun and educational day trip. We were there as Leaders of Learning as part of our Children in Scotland project with other schools and educational groups and the Minister for Learning, Science and Scotland’s Languages Alasdair Allan (Primary 6/5 were the only Primary school children there!)

Tackling the Tour
Primary 6 pupils at Rhu took on a mighty challenge as they cycled their way around France, without even leaving the comfort of the classroom.
While Tour de France riders battle it out in the mountains for the much-coveted maillot jaune, the pedal-powered pupils each took a spin on a road bike, firmly secured to a turbo trainer, while scenes from last year’s race played on the whiteboard to bring the atmosphere to life. With a cycle computer attached to the rear wheel, the keen class were able to see how far they had travelled and how fast they were pedalling. Continue reading Tackling the Tour

Shake up your wake up
Primary 5/4 at St. Mun’s Primary School helped the whole school and Clyde Cottage nursery to ‘Shake Up Their Wake Up’ by taking part in The Big Farmhouse Breakfast week from 26th to 30th of January.
Pupils developed their organisational and communication skills by creating menus for each class; cooking different healthy breakfast options; carrying out surveys and devising a breakfast race to help everyone stay fit and healthy!

Happy Memories in P4 at Kirn
Recently we read a story called Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge by Mem Fox. The story told how a young boy (Wilfred), helped an elderly lady find the memories she thought she had lost by finding objects which help her remember her own childhood so long ago.
Cash for Clothes Appeal
Primary Two at Rhu Primary have recently been learning about Africa in Social Studies. They recently organised a Cash for Clothes Appeal to raise money for the charity Wateraid. Thanks to all the generous donations, they successfully raised £90 to help provide clean water and sanitation for those in need. What responsible citizens – well done!
Road Safety Calendar Competition
We are extremely pleased that 2 of our 4 pupils got recognition for the entries into the annual Road Safety Calendar Competition.
Connor Coombes won 1st place in his P4 category and Abi MacCorquodale received a Highly Commended in her P5 year group. June Graham, A&B Road Safety Officer popped in to hand over their pictures with certificates and a £25 voucher for Connor to spend at Amazon. Well done to both of you

Hermitage Primary and Parklands School Taste of St Andrew’s Event
Primary Five pupils at Hermitage Primary School and Parklands’ pupils have been having a great time. They were fortunate enough to secure funding from the Scottish Government’s ‘Food For Thought’ programme.
This enabled them to plan, prepare and deliver a ‘Taste of St Andrew’ dinner for their parents on the evening of Thursday 27th November in the Victoria Hall, Helensburgh
The planning started even before school broke up in summer as they had to plant potatoes which would be ready to harvest later in the year.

Primary 1 pupils at Rosneath Primary school couldn’t believe their eyes when a very special visitor arrived in their classroom…it was Ziggy!! The boys and girls have been learning about road safety and how to stay safe at night when out and about in their local area. The children were very excited to meet Ziggy and share their learning with him
Rich World, Poor World at Tobermory High School.
S1/2 spent the day considering the topic of”Rich World, Poor World” in their latest RME conference. Over the morning they looked at some of the issues facing those in the world today. They started by dividing the world’s wealth between them (some had a lot more than others) and considered some of the factors which determine whether or not you have enough to eat. The group explored human rights and made a quilt to illustrate them . Paper chains were created to show what barriers there are for some and how these could be broken.

St Andrew’s Primary School’s Third Green Flag!
St Andrew’s Eco Committee met with Paula Love, the Eco Schools Assessor, and informed her of all the hard work put in by the pupils, staff, parents and community members to maintain the Eco School status. After an initial meeting to discuss what has been happening in our school, from weekly litter picking duties to organised days like UNICEF’s Day of Change, the Eco Committee sang our Eco Code; complete with the newly choreographed actions.

Colgrain Senior Citizens’ Christmas Party
On Wednesday 3rd December the Primary 7 and Primary 6/7 pupils at Colgrain Primary hosted a Christmas party for the senior citizens of Helensburgh. The pupils and staff organised Ceilidh dancing, Christmas presents and teas and coffees for their invited grandparents and other senior citizens in the community.

World Aids Day
Pupils at Lochgilphead High School were exceptionally fortunate to welcome Katrina Mitchell from Waverley Care into school to provide HIV awareness sessions on December 1st, World Aids Day.
Katrina is a very experienced trainer and facilitator who has been involved in developing materials relating to Sexual Health and Awareness that are used across Argyll and Bute. Health Week at Rosneath
Last week, 24th – 28th November, Rosneath Primary School enjoyed an action packed Health Week. Pupils experienced a range of activities and workshops, including: Stramash, Heartstart, SOS Fitness, Community Police and Community Lollipop Lady. The health week coincided with the free school lunch pilot for P1-3 and we were delighted to see a large number of pupils tucking into healthy school lunches, yum yum! P1-7 parents were also invited to join their children for a school lunch.
DGS FUN RUN FUND TO BE USED TO HONOUR KARRA
On Thursday 25th September 2014, over 700 pupils and staff of Dunoon Grammar School participated in the Karra Downie charity fun run. Pupils across the school collected sponsors, Alana Scott, Claire Black, Caitie & Sam Esler and Lee Sharp all raised the most amount of money and will be receiving a medal for their efforts.
All the money raised was collected to make an exceptional total of over £9,500.

DGS Success at Inverclyde Cross Country Championships
Pupils at Dunoon Grammar School are celebrating success at the recent Inverclyde Cross Country Championships held earlier this month in Birkmyre Park, Kilmacolm.
Second year twins Nuala and Cliona McCheyne finished first and second in the S2 race, with Niamh Doherty winning the S1 girl’s race and Alan Mollins claiming second in the S1 boys race.
