Last week, the whole school from nursery to primary, spent time developing their drawing skills. The teachers included drawing in different curriculum areas from maths to PE, and on Wednesday we had a ‘whole school drawing day’. The p1 – 7 children went to four workshops over the day where, in the morning, they drew things from nature like shells, branches, stones, driftwood etc. They used a variety of drawing tools like charcoal, oil pastels and pencils. Ulva School raises money for Children in Need
Last Friday we all paid £1 to come to school in our pyjamas…. even the teachers. It was good fun but we all seemed to feel tired all day! In the afternoon we decided we would invite parents and friends to a concert in the school and then sell them tea and cakes. Beccy, our music instructor, helped us to plan the concert. We played our violins and cellos and sang songs in Gaelic and English. Continue reading Ulva School raises money for Children in Need

Dunoon Primary create 3D Artwork in Bishop’s Glen
Two P7 boys from Dunoon Primary visited Bishop’s Glen on the final day of October 2012. They went to create artwork from natural materials gathered from the forest floor. They enjoyed creating 3D sculptures. While collecting their leaves, seeds, moss, twigs, stones and berries they discovered some felled trees and learned how to work out the age of a tree by counting the rings. They were between 24 and 28 years old. It was fantastic to be outdoors even on quite a wet day! Continue reading Dunoon Primary create 3D Artwork in Bishop’s Glen

S3 French Poetry
S3 French in Tobermory have been studying French poetry, mainly the works of Jacques Prévert. They took advantage of the sunshine and beautiful autumn colours to go to Aros Park and take photos to illustrate one of Préverts most famous poems “les feuilles mortes” as well as a couple of other autumnal poems. Two groups chose to take images to represent “les feuilles mortes” in which the sight of the dead leaves prompts memories of a time in a man’s (or a woman’s!)life when they were in a happy relationship which is now over. Other groups took photos of the autumn colours to represent the poem “les saisons”. The colours and scenery are stunning and the class have brought the poems to life with some images which demonstrate understanding of the poems and are now working on displaying their work as poetic posters. Kintyre Pupils & Scottish Opera……..COMING SOON!
In the midst of a city, in the midst of a war, an enduring friendship is formed between a young elephant named Sheila and her keeper. As the bombs begin to fall and the Head Zookeeper worries about the fate of the animals, the local children play and laugh and sing in the Belfast streets………..
The Elephant Angel is a heart-warming new opera for audiences of all ages by composer Gareth Williams and acclaimed novelist Bernard MacLaverty. SCOTA-LAND IN PORT ELLEN
On Wednesday morning Leigh from the Mull Theatre group came to a workshop for P6/7 on creating props for the theatre. The props will then be used for a performance on Islay of the groups latest play called Scota-land. We made a map of the Isle of Mickle for their play Scota-land and we also made artifacts that will go in the pretend museum. We made models of black houses, a beautiful crown from copper leaves, ancient runic writing, clay pots and a dinosaur model that all went on the island. The Island was made by everyone passing a crayon along and doing squiggly lines. Continue reading SCOTA-LAND IN PORT ELLEN

Keith Brumpton Visits Bowmore Primary School
Eventually, after much anticipation, Keith Brumpton, the amazing, famous author, appeared in our school on Friday 7th September 2012! Although he came to our school, he originally came over for The Islay Book Festival. For some odd reason Keith Brumpton came early but Joan Lennon and Linda Strachan (two other fantastic authors) were stranded on the mainland due to the unpredictable mist!
Firstly he told us that he writes scripts for brilliant television shows like 64 Zoo Lane, Balamory and MIHigh but after that he drew scenes from his interesting books. The pictures were amazing (I especially liked the picture of Dino FC). Then he told us his new ideas for books such as Space Bunnies and Meet the Robotsons (I definitely want to buy them!)

LOCAL MOD & FOREST PARTNERS
On Friday, 7th September Bunessan Primary went to Tobermory to the local mod. Some people sang a solo and some people were in the choir which came second. Byron came first in the chanter. Everyone got a certificate. We liked seeing other people singing and everyone had a good time.
At An Tobar we looked at leaves which we had made at school as part of the Forest Partners project. They were made from clay, glass and bronze. There was a film that the P5, 6, 7 class were in. We wrote our names on leaves and they were put on the floor of the exhibition. The whole exhibition looked really cool and amazing. There were lots of leaves hanging down with fairy lights shining. It looked like an enchanted forest. We had lots of fun and got goody bags. By Claire, Iain & Amy – P4
