A recent visit to Rosneath Primary School by Chief Chebe from African Arts in Glasgow had the “joint jumpin'”. What a wonderful learning experience.
The day began with a whole school Assembly related to Black History Month as part of our school’s Global Citizenship journey. The children were amazed at just how far some children have to walk in African countries to collect clean drinking water.

Former SPL Star Visits DGS
It’s not every day that DGS pupils can boast of being part of a football training session with a national cup winning manager – but that is exactly what happened last week, when Dylan Kerr visited the school.
Dylan enjoyed a very long and distinguished playing career, including successful spells with Leeds United and Kilmarnock.

Recently, we had an amazing Eco Week – so much going on! From model making using recycled materials to Beach Cleaning to welcoming our “visitors” from Zoolab to sprucing up our school grounds to Teamwork(out) Day to whole school village walk to planting………………..the list is endless!
Scottish International Storytelling Festival 2014 at Rothesay Primary
Rothesay Primary had a fantastic start to the day today with an inspiring talk and production by Neil Adam and Judy Turner, visitors from Australia, as part of the 2014 Scottish International Storytelling Festival. Our visitors were organised by Patricia McArthur from Rothesay Library and they were a huge hit with Primary 6 and 7 pupils from RPS.

A BUSY FIRST TERM FOR DALNTOBER PRIMARY SCHOOL’S P7
Primary 7 of Dalintober Primary School have had a very busy start to session 2014-2015.
During September and October they have been involved in a “Smoke Free Me” presentation by Raenbow Productions, organised a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support which raised £286.73 and visited a First World War Exhibition in Campbeltown’s Heritage Centre.

Really Small Scientists Win Prizes
Following the Nano-Science workshop in September, Primary 3 and 4 pupils from Dunoon Primary School produced posters about Nano-Jelly. During the workshop, run by the Really Small Science Group from Strathclyde University, the pupils became ‘Really Small Scientists’ for the day and learned about the world of Nano-Science. They discovered how everyday items such as jelly and even their own bodies are made up of tiny nano-sized molecules.

Victorian’s trip
Primary Six pupils at Rhu Primary School journeyed back in time to find out what life was like for Victorian children.
The class visited New Lanark Heritage Centre, which was well-worth the slightly longer travel time. New Lanark is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and proved a perfect venue to stimulate interest in this 18th Century topic.

Port Ellen Success at the Mod
Port Ellen Primary School have again been very successful at the National Mod, which this year was held in Inverness. The schools gaelic Choir, Coisir Bun-Sgoil Port Ilein, won the choral unison rural primary, choral Puirt-a-beul and choral 2 part harmony learner. Their was success for individuals also, with Rebecca coming first and Rowan coming second in the solo singing 7-8, Eva coming first in the solo singing 9-10 and Abbie coming first in the solo singing 11-12 girls and Asher in the boys category. Marvellous Macmillan Coffee Morning at DGS
DGS Staff and invited visitors enjoyed a fantastic coffee morning organised by pupils from the school’s learning centre on Thursday, 2 October – all in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
What a load of rubbish!
As a conclusion to their IDL (Inter disciplinary Learning) of Eco, the children of Clachan and Skipness Primary Schools put on a show stopping performance. As part of their learning the children had completed either a beach clean or a litter walk around their village.
Dunoon Primary School Gardening Club – Harvest Update
In September, children in Dunoon Primary School’s Gardening Club harvested their first crop of potatoes. After throwing away the bad ones and cleaning the soil from the rest, the children piled the potatoes into the barrow and delivered them across the road to the local health food store, Eco Grain, to be sold. (They also kept a few behind for tasting and all agreed that they were very tasty!) Local shoppers had to be quick off the mark as already we’ve heard that the potatoes have sold out! We’ll need to start working on a bumper crop for next year …

Porridge Day in the Woods @ Kilmartin
Friday 10th October is National Porridge Day and to celebrate this, the children cooked and ate their own porridge in the woods during Forest School.
They kept a close look-out for that rascal Goldilocks so she couldn’t creep up and eat all of their porridge while they weren’t looking so to help, the children all brought their favourite bears to act as lookouts!

One Planet Picnic at Strath of Appin Primary School.
The One Planet Picnic initiative is part of the Keep Scotland Beautiful Eco-Schools programme and Clean and Green Legacy 2014. It is designed to raise awareness of where food comes from, and how it is produced.
Strath of Appin Primary School’s picnic took the form of a Harvest lunch where all the children and staff in the school were invited to enjoy fabulous foods that had been freshly prepared in the school kitchen.

News from Castlehill Primary School
Primary 5 Garden Project
Last week, Primary 5 wrote letters to staff at Springbank and Mr MacArthur at the Garden Shop asking if they could kindly help out with their garden project. Very quickly, we got barrels from Springbank Distillery and plants and flowers from the Garden shop.
Achahoish Art Exhibition
This term our art project has been about Our Identity and what we have in Common. During this learning we took lots of photographs of our favourite things at school – in the class room and the playground – and at home. We took photos of our families, our toys, our pets and our bedrooms.
Teacher locks P5 up in jail
P5s in Dunoon Primary School went to Inverary Jail on Wednesday as part of their Scotland topic. They got there by two mini buses. When they got to the jail the children got changed into prisoner’s outfits and went to the Court Room to listen to some cases. After the Court Room they went to the Airing Yard. The Airing Yard is where the prisoners did exercises like running and walking. Next they went to the Old Jail; it was sort of cold but it’s a lot different nowadays.
Skipness and Clachan Schools News
Wee Cup of Tea – Macmillan Coffee Afternoon
The children of Skipness Primary School had a wonderful time on Thursday 25th September. They spent the morning preparing delicious cupcakes with green icing which were to be sold in the afternoon to their many visitors. The school also received many delicious delights from the parents and residents of Skipness. Even though it was a drizzly day, this did not prevent people from joining the children for their “wee cup of tea”.
Charity Work at St. Joseph’s
Last week St. Joseph’s staff and children were delighted to welcome along to assembly Stacey Cameron of Mission Matters Scotland (Missio). The school has a long standing association with Missio as it is one of the foremost charities we support in any academic year. Stacey gave a very informative and colourful presentation to the children about how Missio’s money is spent to assist children throughout the world.
Red, White and Blue Day at Rosneath Primary School
On Friday 3rd October staff and pupils at Rosneath Primary School wore an array of red, white and blue to raise money for three main service charities: Royal Navy and Marines Charity; ABF The Soldier’s Charity and RAF Benevolent Fund.
Miss McLean would like to thank parents for generously donating on the day and helping the school to raise a fantastic £107.15 for these very worthy charities.

Dunstaffnage Castle Visit
This term Primary 2 and Primary 3 in Park Primary School are working co-operatively to learn about Life in a Local Castle. As part of this we visited Dunstaffnage Castle on Friday 12th September and had a great day exploring the remains of a real castle. We identified the main features of a castle and imagined what life would have been like for those living in the castle hundreds of years ago.
