Strachur Primary ‘Walk to Rio’

Strachur Walk to Rio 1Strachur Primary and Pre-5 have started a challenge – to walk the 6000 miles to Rio, where this year’s Olympic Games will be held. We have been doing laps of the playground and have figured out that 7 laps is approximately one mile. Last week we managed to walk 250 miles! The children (and staff) enjoy the exercise and we have also been learning about Rio in the classroom.

Salen Primary Hosts Rugby World Cup

Salen Rugby World Cup 1Five countries battled for supremacy with Ireland achieving world domination when they scooped up the prestigious Rugby World Cup at Salen Primary School.

This event was made possible with the help of Mr Gus Whyte who kindly refereed and Mrs Babs Whyte, PE Teacher. The children of Salen Primary School were joined by children from Lochdonhead Primary and Ulva Primary Schools as part of their normal PE sessions. Cowal Schools Golf Tournament

Strone and Cowal Golf TournamentCowal Primary Schools Golf Tournament took place at Blairmore and Strone Golf Club as part of Strone Primary School’s Health Week. Teams from Innellan, Toward, Sandbank, Strachur, Strone and Tighnabruaich took part in a fantastic event, organised in partnership with the golf club, Mrs Daw from Strone Primary School and Active Schools Co-ordinator Mr Andy Trull.

Small Schools Football Festival

Strachur PS Football FestOn Thursday 5th November Active Schools in partnership with Strachur Primary School ran a football festival for P4 and P5 pupils from the smaller primary schools within Cowal, at Strachur Park. The event was well attended with teams from Strachur, Strone, Tighnabruaich, Lochgoilhead and Kilmodan Primary Schools. The competition was based on a round robin with all the teams playing each other. The pupils were all very excited as for many this would be their first competitive football playing against other schools.

On the Road to Rio!

Tarbert PS Road to Rio 1Pupils in Primary 7/6 at Tarbert Academy have taken up the Team GB challenge of running the distance to Rio de Janeiro (9450 km from Tarbert) before the Olympic Games there next summer. Running three mornings a week, counting distances run in PE lessons and they are nearly 5% of the way there! After four weeks of running pupils have noticed a definite improvement in their fitness and are enjoying running as a great start to their day.

DGS Learning Centre Sponsored Walk

dgslearningcentresponsoredwalk12On Thursday 3rd of September all the learning centre pupils from Dunoon Grammar went on a sponsored walk. Pupils and staff set of from School down Kirn Brae, along the front all the way to Bullwood Nature Trail, near Innellan. Some senior pupils supported the younger pupils, keeping them safe and happy as part of their youth Achievement Award.

Cowal Rugby Festival

Strone PS Rugby FestThe 2015 Rugby Festival for the Cowal primary schools was held on Thursday 3rd September at Dunoon Grammar School in glorious sunshine. The festival was extremely well attended with over 100 pupils taking part. All the schools had received a block of rugby coaching in the previous year through the partnership between Active Schools, the Rugby Development Officer Brendan McGroarty and Cowal Rugby Club. On the day a number of S6 students did an excellent job by helping to referee the games and coach the young players.

Kirn P6 go wild at Ardentinny

Kirn PS Ardentinny 1 Sept 15Back to school was even more exciting for Kirn Primary’s P6 pupils this year as they set off for four days of challenges at Ardentinny Outdoor Education Centre.

Children were treated to a programme of gorge walking, which was very challenging and involved walking up waterfalls, canoeing, and lots of team challenges. Health Week @ John Logie Baird

JLB Health Week 4 FunkyJohn Logie Baird Primary School children and staff took part in a variety of fun activities, to celebrate Health Week. The children’s activities included a presentation from SSPCA, Tae Kwon Do, Fruit demonstration and tasting by Waitrose, Big Pedal Cycling and Scooter event, the school sports day and nursery sports day, cardio tennis, rugby, mini kickers. Julie Smith of Funky Fitness put both children and staff through their paces with an energetic and fun filled day of fitness on the Friday to end the week in style.

John Logie Baird Touch Ruby Winners

JLB Rubgy WinnersPrimary 4 children across Helensburgh and Lomond have been taking part in a Touch Rugby training programme through Active Schools this term. All schools entered a competition within this programme to link the number of passes they could do without dropping the ball.

John Logie Baird Primary are delighted to have won this competetion with 25 passes. Here they are being presented with the winner’s cup by Adam from Active Schools.

Come and Try Sports Event for P2

Lochgilphead 4 PDA Sports day 1Lochgilphead High School 4 PDA organised and held a sports event for Lochgilphead Primary P2 classes. All pupils had a great afternoon. Cameron McCallum started the event off with a warm up for 38 pupils and then the pupils were split into small groups to take part in the different sports on offer.

Park PS Shinty MacKay Cup Winners 1‘On Monday 15th June, Park Primary Shinty Team travelled to Inveraray to meet Kyles in the semi finals of shinty’s most prestigious competition – The MacKay Cup. Park won 2-0 putting them through to the final which took place on Saturday…

Tesco Football Fanatics!

RPS Tesco FootballThe pupils in Primary 1, 2 and 3 at Rothesay Primary are football fanatics after six weeks of training and skills development through the SFA and the Tesco Bank Football Challenge. Martin Rae was very pleased with how the boys and girls worked across the sessions and the support he had from all the staff. Rothesay Primary thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and would like to thank Martin for organising a local Festival of Football for us as a finale to the whole experience. Six lucky players also had their footballing dreams come true when they got surprise tickets to the Scottish Cup Final!

Garelochhead PS, proud winners of the Golf Trophy!

Garelochhead Golf PresentationLast term, one of the Golf professionals from Helensburgh Golf Club, Matt Burt, gave golf lessons to P6/5 children at Garelochhead Primary School. This course was part of the Active Schools initiative using amenities in the area to get children more involved in sport. On Good Friday, five of the children who took part in the lessons went to Helensburgh Golf Club to participate in a fun golf competition against some other local schools. They had to show off the skills they had learned by scoring points while putting, chipping and hitting golf balls at targets.

Kirn’s P6 have “the BEST time EVER” at Ardentinny

Kirn Ardentiny 1Kirn Primary’s P6 children had an amazing time at Ardentinny Outdoor Centre and in just under four days managed to rock-hop, safari on the seashore, abseil, waterfall climb, forest walk, orienteer, eat great food, disco and have the Best Time EVER! Everyone had a fantastic time and lots of happy memories to bring home.

Rosneath Cross Country 1On Saturday 18th April in the grounds of Kirkcaldy High School, Fife, Team Rosneath joined 1,000 other P6 and P7 pupils for the 28th Annual Cross Country Championships. What a hard course, what a challenge but our athletes ALL crossed that all important Finish Line!
