Shinty Medal
Fergus Taylor came in showing off yet another medal!!
Fergus has recently joined the newly formed Shinty Team in Appin and last Sunday 22nd September he joined the rest of his team mates to participate in the Shinty Tournament at Mossfield Park in Oban.

Beaming Barcaldine Boys
Smiling faces all round this morning when three boys arrived with their medals to school this morning. Well done to Ewan MacPherson and Fergus and Callan Taylor for participating in The Dalriada Tournament on Sunday 29th September. The boys from Barcaldine Primary School travelled to the Isle of Mull yesterday as part of the Taynuilt’s Rugby team – Etive Vikings. The boys played very well and got 1st place.

ASHFIELD SCHOOL ENJOYS PICNIC
On Tuesday 24th September 2013 at Ashfield Primary we had a picnic called The One Planet Picnic. The One planet Picnic is an event that people all over Scotland have been taking part in to show that we could (and should) survive on food that has been grown/caught/harvested in Scotland. Hedgehog House
Easdale Primary’s Early Level Class have been learning about hedgehogs and Mr. Gordon McColl came into school to help us build a hedgehog house in our school grounds.
Luing Trip to the Falkirk wheel
The first and second level pupils from Luing Primary School had a fabulous trip to the Falkirk Wheel. They experienced going on the Wheel, learned how canals were built and had lots of fun in the play park and water park. My favourite part was on the wheel. We went on a huge canal boat that went extremely slowly. Once we were on the wheel it only took four minutes to go from the Forth and Clyde Canal to the Union Canal. Four pupils from Dunoon Grammar School recently attended a question and answer session with Dr Vinton G Cerf, an American computer scientist, who is recognised as one of only two “fathers of the Internet” and is currently employed as Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist.

Luss Presentation
P6&7 pupils from Luss Primary gave a presentation to the National Conference of the Rotary Club in Crieff Hydro Hotel on Saturday. The children were invited to speak to the Rotarians about their environmental work, saving the powan fish in Loch Lomond.
Powan are found only in Loch Lomond and Loch Eck.While their numbers are fine in Loch Eck, they have become almost extinct in Loch Lomond. This is because of a small fish,the Ruff, which was accidentally introduced into Loch Lomond in the 1980s and eats Powan eggs. Continue reading Luss Presentation
Small Isles visit Glasgow
As part of their work about Crofting Connections, the P5-7 at Small Isles Primary school had a very exciting day when they went to the Kelvingrove museum in Glasgow on Tuesday 17th September. They went to attend a party to open their exhibition which was about crofting in the past, present and future on Jura. Lots of people who had connections with Jura came to see it too. The P5-7s also took part in a Rainforest Explorers work shop which was great fun. They looked around the museum all day long and had a VIP guided tour around it. Tobermory P6/7, Renewable energies on Mull
Mr Finch from Mull and Iona Community Trust came to our class on 17th September to talk to us renewable energies on Mull and show us the Nissan Leaf.
Firstly Mr Finch judged our ‘car of the future’ competition. We had lots of ideas like solar powered, wind powered, hydro powered and biothermal cars. The winner was Finn’s Cow Pat Car. Mr Finch liked the idea of using the methane in cow pats to power a car and thought it would put cow pats to good use.
Strone Eco Reps visit the Scottish Parliament on Holyrood Apple Day
On Wednesday 18th October, 3 of our Eco Committee attended the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh for Holyrood Apple Day. We went with Merle from the Ardentinny Walled Garden Project to present apples picked from the garden. We had new varieties as well as apples from the old Victorian apple tree in the garden.

Community Planned Partnership at St Joseph’s!
Community planned partnership is alive and well at St Joseph’s in Helensburgh. Throughout the academic session all classes will be involved in planning their IDL studies in conjunction with a community partner. This term both P1 and P3 involved the partnership of the local Dog Groomer as they each approached the study of ‘Pets’ at a basic and more advance level respectively.

Felting at Benmore Gardens
On Thursday 5th September P5 and P7 spent an amazing day at Benmore Botanical Gardens with their teachers and support staff. On Friday 6th September P6/5 and P7/6 also enjoyed a fabulous day at Benmore. Cath and Katie from the Education Service in Edinburgh’s Botanical Gardens were the superb instructors during the visits. Each class got the fantastic opportunity to make felt, incorporating an image of a plant or greenery. These had been freshly picked from the gardens to provide inspiration for the felting project.
HARVEST SALE @ Kilmartin
Thanks to the help and generosity from parents, children and teachers, our Harvest Sale on Friday 13th September raised £86. We will put this money to good use, buying new resources for outdoor education to continue with our good work in the garden and the woods.
What a Buzz!
P7 pupils in Rhu are looking to achieve the John Muir award this term for discovering, exploring, conserving and sharing their work on bees and their local area. They made a great start to their project by visiting a local beekeeper. Fortunately, it was a lovely sunny day and the bees were out foraging for the last pollen and nectar of the season. What a good opportunity to spot the bees busy at work.
Kilcreggan Primary School
Last Friday our Primary 5/4 class gathered brambles from our School grounds and apples from fruit trees planted by pupils and parents earlier this year. They then came back into class and made apple and bramble crumble. There was enough for every class to try some! As you can see from the pictures it was delicious.
Achaleven Primary School Helping out Hope Kitchen
When we returned from the school holidays we discovered an abundance of crops in our school garden, from peas, giant cucumbers and carrots to a bumper crop of potatoes – which also won first prize in the Connel Flower Show last weekend!
What should we do with all these vegetables? We wanted to help others so we contacted Hope Kitchen in Oban to see if they could use them.

First day back at the Dalintober allotment!
Dalintober Eco Group were amazed when they visited their allotment for the first time this term. They discovered an abundance of fruit and vegetables had sprouted during the summer including: marrows, potatoes, tomatoes, rhubarb and even an apple!

News from Luing
The Early Level children at Luing have already been busy in the workshop making a buggy. They used an old storage box, the back of an old children’s settee and wheels from an old dilapidated bookcase They had lots of fun trying it out in the playground and are now working on improving on it.
Oban High School’s Loch Eil Adventure!
Ten members of Oban High School’s Senior Pupil Leadership Team attended Loch Eil Outdoor Centre recently completing a Teams and Leadership Development Course.
