Last week all pupils at Rothesay Primary wrote speeches for their Challenge Homework. The pupils then had to deliver their speeches in class and answer any questions their classmates might have. Topics ranged from holidays, to hobbies, to family pets – Mrs Shaw even met a little black puppy in the corridor after having been a ‘live’ prop! Pupils learned the skills of note making, using prompt cards, ways to use props, how to involve your audience and how to listen and think of questions to ask if you were in the audience.

Celebrating Shakespeare at Rothesay Primary Pupils at Rothesay Primary recently had a special assembly because Morven Gregor, the Education Officer at Mount Stuart had some very exciting news to tell us – an original set of 3 volumes of Shakespeare had been found on Bute! Morven told us that a curator had come from Oxford University to make sure the books were genuine – and they were!

Mad Science Fun
The children of Carradale and Drumlemble Primary Schools were unrecognisable on Friday 29th April. There was a sea of white coats to be seen. The children had transformed into mad scientists for the day.
Pedestrian Safety Skills at Rhu
As part of the Health & Wellbeing Experiences and Outcomes, Primary Three at Rhu, recently took part in a ‘Street Feet’ programme aimed to reinforce road safety rules. Children enjoyed several practical sessions in which they undertook role-play scenarios to avoid danger and ensure their safety as pedestrians.
Polarlands Performance at Rhu
Primary one, two and three pupils at Rhu recently performed their ‘Eddie The Penguin Saves the World’ show to peers and parents. The performance was the culmination of a collaborative topic exploring the Polarlands.
The topic had an underlying Eco theme and provided lots of opportunity for cross-curricular links, with children singing, acting, playing percussion and hosting weekly assemblies to reinforce important Eco messages.

Dalintober PS Retain Rotary Cup 2016
Dalintober PS Team 2 won the Kintyre Rotary Cup P7 Quiz for a fourth successive year, with the school’s Team 1 finishing a very close second. The winning team will now travel to Glasgow in June to compete in the National Finals. Well done to all!
Kilmartin Primary School’s Amazing Artists
Creativity is always a top priority at Kilmartin P.S. and this term, the children are very proud of the outcome of their portrait work, showing how rapidly their skills are developing. As part of their lessons, they have studied works by Picasso and have been learning to sketch with charcoal and how to use tone effectively. I’m sure the children would love to have your comments on their work.
Duchess Woods Cross Country
Speedy runners from Rhu scooped top prizes in the Duchess Woods Cross Country relays.
In the Primary 6 girls race Sasha Walker, Louisa Brown and Roisin Kavanagh all put in top class performances and galloped home in first place to take the gold medals. While the nippy boys team of Ross Carmichael, Max Brannan and William Harrison put up a strong performance against toug competition to secure third place. However, their combined times put them in the top spot for winning the overall Primary 6 shield.
ROCKET SEEDS FROM OUTER SPACE AT ACHAHOISH P.S.
This term we have planted some very special seeds as part of our science space topic. We received two packs of rocket seeds from the Royal Horticultural Society, one of which has been taken up to space to the ISS by the British astronaut, Tim Peake. We have planted both packs of seeds and we want to find out what effect being in space has had on the seeds. As we don’t know which of our packs went to space we will have to record their growth pattern and send off the information to RHS.

Wonderful ‘Chess’ success at Rockfield!
Billy Bratton, David Simpson and Stewart Martin represented Rockfield Primary Chess Club at the Delancey UK school’s chess challenge Megafinal 2016 in Airdrie on Saturday 24th April. The three primary 4 boys successfully gained some good wins and draws during the tournament as well as making some new friends.
Lots of fun was had by all.
Local Fairy Den!
At Rhu Primary School, Primary Two have been developing their pioneering skills in Ardenconnel Woods. They have learned to forage for natural materials and use them to build a den for the local fairies. They plan to use these skills to make a camp as part of their Viking topic.
Parklands school to grow seeds from space!
The Selkie Class at Parklands School are preparing to become space biologists and embark on a voyage of discovery by growing seeds that have been into space.
In September, 2kg of rocket seeds were flown to the International Space Station (ISS) on Soyuz 44S where they will spend several months in microgravity before returning to Earth in March 2016. The seeds have been sent as part of Rocket Science, an educational project launched by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and the UK Space Agency. Big Pedal at Taynuilt Nursery
Taynuilt Nursery children brought a variety of bikes and scooters to Nursery as part of the Big Pedal Week and also used the Nursery bikes and scooters on our Wednesday Gym session. This will be done again this week so hope the sun shines on us all again!
Islay Rock Map
The pupils of Port Charlotte Primary school have been learning about the fascinating geology of Islay. We were very lucky to have the help of local geologist David Webster for our project. David took us on field trips to every corner of the island and we learned lots of interesting facts about Islay’s geology and how the rocks which make up this amazing island were formed;
Tayvallich P4-7 – Action in an Emergency
Pupils at Tayvallich PS have been learning how to save a life. On Tuesday 19 April Mr. Andy Craven talked to the P4-7 children about the correct methods of dealing with cardiac arrest. He discussed protocols and the children were made aware of the physical signs of a person who was unwell and suffering cardiac arrest.
Tayvallich and Glassary Young Leaders
Primary 6 pupils from Glassary and Tayvallich joined together on a lovely sunny day to be trained as Young Leaders by Active Schools Co-ordinator, Eilidh MacPherson.
They brainstormed the personal qualities and skills that they would need to be effective sports leaders. Great fun was had by all when trying out the games and then planning how to deliver these games to groups of younger children.
At the end of the day the P6 pupils had a go at teaching some fun active games to Tayvallich’s P1-4 class.

DGS Autism Awareness
April 1st 2016 was Autism Awareness Day in Dunoon Grammar School. The Learning Centre pupils prepared a Power Point presentation to show at house time and made a whole army of gingerbread cookies to sell on the day. The whole school was invited to design jigsaw pieces which were joined together for display in the Forum, showing that DGS supports Autism awareness. The event was a great success so well done to everyone involved. A total of £120 was raised for our local autism support organisation: Autism Argyll.
Creative Days at Kilcreggan Primary School
The children, staff and parents of Kilcreggan Primary School had a great end to the Spring term trying out new skills. Using our skills as Confident individuals, we took creative risks! We were organised, managed our emotions and challenged ourselves to ‘Go for it, Finish it!’ Activities that were on offer included crochet, origami, cake decorating, K’nex challenge, yoga, fimo modelling, using ipads to create games, creative music and decoupage. The children worked in vertical groupings working and supporting each other.
Dunoon Primary School Health Week
This week the whole school have been involved in lots of physical activity including karate, shinty, orienteering, tennis, fitness dance and yoga. The older children also had presentations from Police Scotland, local Health Visitors and the assistant manager from the local Oxfam shop who all gave very interesting talks with very important messages regarding physical and emotional wellbeing.
Open Afternoon at Southend Primary School
On the 23rd of March Southend Primary School held an Open Afternoon to share their learning with parents and carers. There were five stations, and we were each in charge of one of these, using our knowledge to teach parents and carers. These stations included, Reciprocal Reading, Garageband, Origami bookmark making, screen printing and food and health. At the Reciprocal Reading station the parents were given the roles required for this and had to carry out that specific role when reading the text.
