Tayvallich P4-7 – Action in an Emergency

Tayvallich First aid training 1Pupils at Tayvallich PS have been learning how to save a life. On Tuesday 19 April Mr. Andy Craven talked to the P4-7 children about the correct methods of dealing with cardiac arrest. He discussed protocols and the children were made aware of the physical signs of a person who was unwell and suffering cardiac arrest.

Tayvallich First aid training 2The importance of initially assessing any potential dangers at the scene was emphasised- so that they would not also become a casualty. By acting out the sequence of actions to assess if the casualty was breathing normally, pupils gained confidence in being a ‘first responder’. They learned how to place a person in the Recovery Position.

Tayvallich First aid training 3Tayvallich community now have two Defibrillators in place, one outside the village shop and one at Carsaig. Pupils were told why this life-saving technology is available to the public and all pupils experienced using the demonstration defibrillators on mannequins. CPR techniques were practised and the pupils realised after a short time how much effort is required when giving chest compressions.

Mr. Craven told the children that phoning for an ambulance should be done once the casualty has been put in a position to enable a clear airway for breathing. Children should always try to get adult help…but, if this is not possible, to do the best they can until help does arrive.

Mr. Craven also gave advice and the appropriate actions to take for a person who is choking.
