On Friday 19th June Park Primary 3 visited the Oban High School Home Economics department as part of our interdisciplinary learning project on Food Journeys. While there we made our own individual pizzas using ingredients sourced from different countries around the world and then measured which pizza had ‘travelled’ the furthest! The entire visit was extremely well organised and the children found it a very enjoyable and valuable experience. They also enjoyed eating their pizzas!

P5 Wonka Factory Opens at Dunoon Primary School
A few weeks ago the Primary 5s at Dunoon Primary School released 20 Golden Tickets into the community. The winners of these lucky tickets were invited to the Factory Opening on Thursday 4th June. At 2pm, the Primary 5s, dressed as characters from the novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” greeted the crowds of people and took them on a special tour.

Bowmore Celebrates V.E.Day!
Thanks to our wonderful kitchen ladies, Bowmore Primary enjoyed a lovely lunch which was reminiscent of the street parties, held in celebration of the Victory in Europe in 1945. This celebration was the brainchild of Mrs McHarrie, our kitchen lady! We had cheese, ham, egg and tinned salmon sandwiches, scones and pancakes, all washed down with lots of juice. We had to bring our own cup and plate as everyone did in 1945.
Glassary go on a farm to fork trail
P1-3 had a great time visiting Tesco in Oban as part of their Food and Farming topic. They began in the bakery and helped to make bread and see all the stages that bread goes through before it appears on the store shelves. Watching fresh pancakes be made and then eating them whilst still warm was a highlight of the visit! Another favourite activity was tasting and comparing cheeses made from cow’s, goat’s and sheep’s milk on the cheese counter.
A feast of Local Foods at Salen Primary Health Day
Primary 6 pupils from Salen, Lochdonhead and Ulva Primary schools treated all staff and pupils to a lunch of locally produced food as the highlight of Health Day where the theme was Healthy Eating. They took over the school kitchen for the morning and, under the guidance of sous chef Michael Shannon from the Western Isles Hotel, assisted by Iona, and Eilidh and Debbie from the school kitchen, they prepared and served a feast of wonderful Mull produce which had been kindly donated by local producers.

Pizza Perfection at Rhunahaorine
Children at Rhunahaorine have been exploring ways of creating healthy, tasty pizzas using fresh ingredients. We have been developing our skills for learning, life and work.
First we learned about basic food hygiene.
Next we baked and tasted several different pizza base recipes and judged them on the criteria of cost, healthiness, appearance and taste.
Parents Open Evening at Strone Primary School
Last Thursday, Parents of Strone Primary School were invited to attend our Open Learning Evening, where pupils had a chance to show off their learning this term. As a culmination of this term’s Tuesday Afternoon Skills Clubs, Parents were treated to delicious Rocky Road and Fruit Kebabs prepared by the Cooking Club, a guided tour of our Pop Art Gallery by the pupils involved in the Art Club, and they were also able to see examples of work displayed by the Science and Technology and Music Clubs.

Fairtrade Coffee Morning
On Friday the 6th of March we had a coffee morning to raise money for Fairtrade. All week, each class have been learning about Fairtrade so that we would know what Fairtrade is all about. P1/2 went down to the Co-op to hunt for Fairtrade products and P3/4 studied the journey of a banana. P5/6 wrote a persuasive piece text encouraging others for or against supporting Fairtrade and P6/7 made a Fairtrade cookbook. Every class also baked a cake using Fairtrade products.
Tackling the Tour
Primary 6 pupils at Rhu took on a mighty challenge as they cycled their way around France, without even leaving the comfort of the classroom.
While Tour de France riders battle it out in the mountains for the much-coveted maillot jaune, the pedal-powered pupils each took a spin on a road bike, firmly secured to a turbo trainer, while scenes from last year’s race played on the whiteboard to bring the atmosphere to life. With a cycle computer attached to the rear wheel, the keen class were able to see how far they had travelled and how fast they were pedalling. Continue reading Tackling the Tour
P3 The Big Bake Off at Dunoon Primary!
On Friday 20th February P3 held a Bake Sale in Dunoon Primary’s GP room. Having decided a few weeks previously that they wanted the opportunity to see a production of ”The Boy and the Bunnet’- a musical story they had studied last term, being held at the Queen’s Hall, funding the visit was a problem. £160 was needed to pay for the tickets. Hannah suggested we hold a Bake Sale and so the plan was hatched.

Shake up your wake up
Primary 5/4 at St. Mun’s Primary School helped the whole school and Clyde Cottage nursery to ‘Shake Up Their Wake Up’ by taking part in The Big Farmhouse Breakfast week from 26th to 30th of January.
Pupils developed their organisational and communication skills by creating menus for each class; cooking different healthy breakfast options; carrying out surveys and devising a breakfast race to help everyone stay fit and healthy!

Bake Sale @ Dunooon Primary School
Primary 6 Girls Erin & Olivia of Dunoon Primary School were delighted to raise the sum of £200 today at a bake sale they organised themselves! The girls raffled a cake for 50p a ticket and sold homebaking provided by their class at morning break. They put such a lot of hard work and effort into raising this amazing amount of money for The British Heart Foundation.
Such terrific initiative! Well Done!

Garelochhead’s P7 Class enjoyed baking delicious ‘Christmas Spiced Biscuits’ as part of their active learning in Maths. After budgeting money, planning the most economical recipes and then measuring out their ingredients, they produced fabulous biscuits to wrap and sell at our Christmas Fayre. Well Done. Christmas is a time of happiness and coming together. At Rosneath Primary School Staff and Pupils recently, courtesy of Mrs Johnson and the ladies in the kitchen, sat down to a delicious Christmas Lunch. Lots of festive cheer – background Christmas music, crackers being pulled, lots of happy smiling faces and…………………………clean trays and plates!

Colgrain Primary Christmas Fayre
The Primary 6 and 7 pupils at Colgrain Primary School held a very successful enterprise event on Friday 12th December. As part of their enterprise education they planned and ran a Christmas café and crafts morning in the school hall. Pupils in the school had been busy making a range of Christmas decorations and crafts which sold out on the day. As well as the crafts there was a table heaving with delicious home baking, a very popular tombola, competitions and a second hand book stall.

Hermitage Primary and Parklands School Taste of St Andrew’s Event
Primary Five pupils at Hermitage Primary School and Parklands’ pupils have been having a great time. They were fortunate enough to secure funding from the Scottish Government’s ‘Food For Thought’ programme.
This enabled them to plan, prepare and deliver a ‘Taste of St Andrew’ dinner for their parents on the evening of Thursday 27th November in the Victoria Hall, Helensburgh
The planning started even before school broke up in summer as they had to plant potatoes which would be ready to harvest later in the year.

‘Lots’ of News from St Andrew’s!
St Andrew’s Primary School’s Third Green Flag!
St Andrew’s Eco Committee met with Paula Love, the Eco Schools Assessor, and informed her of all the hard work put in by the pupils, staff, parents and community members to maintain the Eco School status. After an initial meeting to discuss what has been happening in our school, from weekly litter picking duties to organised days like UNICEF’s Day of Change, the Eco Committee sang our Eco Code; complete with the newly choreographed actions.
