Dalintober PS & ELC were delighted to welcome Dr Andrew Dalziell as part of the school’s commitment to developing the acclaimed ‘Better Movers & Thinkers’ programme across the whole school and ELC. Dr Dalziell is highly regarded for his work and research in this area and worked with the staff and pupils on the theory and practice of BMT and the marriage of healthy, active bodies and healthy, active minds – we look forward to welcoming him back in March.

As part of our Food for Thought topic Primary 4/3 from Kirn Primary visited Benmore Cafe with Miss Campbell. We were allowed to go behind the counter and into the kitchens to see where all the delicious food is prepared. Then we sat in the cafe, looked at the menus and had our lunch. The lovely people at the Cafe gave us some tasters to experiment with different flavours.

Primary 1 & 2 pupils along with their teachers, enjoyed an afternoon of Scottish food tasting. They learned about the history of the dishes before trying them and discussed what they liked or disliked. The menu was: a piece and jam, haggis and an oatcake, followed by a piece of shortbread.
On Tuesday 6th December the Hermitage Primary School P7 Technology Challenge came to a close with the group presentations to an audience of invited judges and guests. Using skills in Technology, Maths, Language, Science and PSD, the pupils had to work in cooperative groups to plan and design a working electrical vehicle which was supported by a good business plan. They kept track of their progress in a booklet using the Book Creator Ipad app and delivered their presentations supported by a Keynote presentation

Some of the pupils in St Columba’s, have been awarded the title of Digital Leaders. The school works in partnership with iTeach, an education company who supports staff and pupils to embed the use of technology into their curriculum, who have helped to train some of the pupils to ensure that they can, amongst a wide range of things, troubleshoot and create video tutorials to support other pupils and staff. Every child in the school has their own iPad that is used to support them in all areas of the curriculum and to ensure that the children in St Columba’s have the very highest standard of digital skills possible.
Blast of a Day
Primary 6 pupils at Rhu had a morning of science that was simply out of this world, thanks to a visit from a space scientist.
Strachur Primary pupils (and a few of our pre-5!) were delighted to have visitors from Glasgow Science Centre on Tuesday to teach us about how our bodies use oxygen.
Primary 1-4 participated in a workshop called ‘Go, Oxygen, Go!’ and P5-7 had ‘Get Active’. We found out where oxygen comes from, how it enters our body, how the body transfers it to our blood and it’s journey to our muscles. We took part in lots if fun experiments and learned many interesting facts.

On Monday 3rd October the pupils from Luing Primary visited the Atlantic Island Centre on Luing to see the farming exhibition. Jane MacLachlan and Col MacDougall showed the children round and explained some of the exhibits and photographs. Col, who had worked on the farm for 55 years, answered lots of questions about how farming has changed. All of the children found it very interesting and they especially enjoyed seeing relatives and neighbours in a lot of the old photographs. North Bute Primary School had a roaring time when the Wild about Scotland Bus came to Port Bannatyne. The RZSS experts taught our pupils about the skull structure of our native wildlife. We all learnt about conservation that is happening here in Scotland and the children were able to have all of their scientific questions answered. Thanks to the bus we now have so much to investigate ourselves. The children have been inspired to be biologists. Our school quiz was amazing with everyone involved using their new knowledge to gain team points, and win the game. Well done Team Wolves, who won by a whisker!
On Sunday 25th September 2016 the pupils, parents and staff of Furnace Primary celebrated being awarded our 4th Eco-Schools Green Flag. Our celebration morning started early on Sunday with a garden taskforce made up of parents and pupils setting about clearing our wildlife garden and pond, cutting back bushes, making bottle sides for our plastic bottle greenhouse and generally tidying up our school grounds and gardens. We found some interesting marine life in our pond in the process. Our volunteers were rewarded for all their hard work with a picnic lunch and a fantastic “Green Flag” cake made by Mrs Baird. Pupils and staff are delighted that the school has won this award from Sportscotland for a second time. The award is recognition of our school’s achievements in putting physical education and sport at the heart of the school. We are committed to ensuring that there are opportunities for every pupil to engage in physical education, school sport and ultimately go on to enjoy life long participation in sport and physical activity.
Excitement was in the air at Lochdonhead Primary on Mull when the official opening took place of the school’s outdoor science laboratory by Michael Russell MSP. The laboratory was created using the £1,000 prize money that the school received as a result of winning last year’s “Our Environment” competition. Argyll and Bute Council’s Policy Lead for Education, Councillor Rory Colville said: “This is a wonderful initiative and the pupils of Lochdonhead Primary School are very worthy winners. Pupils at Minard and Furnace Primaries were very fortunate last week to have developed their coding skills through two mini-technology days led by Steven Simpson of Argyll & Bute Council. The technology days came about as a result of pupil feedback saying they were really keen to learn more about coding. Steven came along to both primaries armed with Raspberry Pi, Lego We Do 2.0 (programmable lego) and ‘Flying Spiders’ (drones). Steven also showed us how to make mini-film trailers using Ipads.

Primary 3/4/5 at St Andrew’s Rothesay, have had a very busy start to Autumn. Last week, they worked on the school allotment and were amazed at the range of vegetables that had grown over the summer months: carrots, potatoes, beetroot, parsnips and the most enormous cabbages they had ever seen!
John Logie Baird Primary School and Pre Five Unit have been celebrating their success at the Scottish Education Awards 2016. They were delighted to be a top 3 finalist in the Learning through Technologies category at this year’s event. Judges from Education Scotland visited the school back in April and spoke to pupils, staff, parents and members of the community who were involved in their hugely successful Oscars Night and their innovative new Improving and Achieving report –
On the 1st of June 2016, eleven pupils from Dunoon Grammar School took part in the Scottish Disability Sports National Junior Athletics tournament in Grangemouth. Competitors came from all over the country to race and take part in a great variety of sports. This is the sixth time that DGS pupils have participated.
During the week of 6th-10th June pupils and staff at Colgrain enjoyed an activity packed Eco Week. The Eco Committee have been working very hard this year to plan and implement a variety of Eco initiatives. During the Eco Week pupils took part in a variety of group sessions, including: making fruit kebabs, Judo, Sports Day, Litter/Recycling with Argyll and Bute Council, SSPCA workshop, a visit to Waitrose and iCycle.
