In June 2013, a number of pupils from Dunoon Grammar School joined together to create a short film to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking. The film was called ‘The Last Cigarette’ and was made by passionate drama students along with the help of David Hayman’s film company, Shooters and NHS Highland. The film originally came about because the NHS had asked the Charity Spirit Aid, also operated by David Hayman, to come up with ideas for an anti-smoking video that would be aimed at young people and would encourage them to not only stop smoking but not to start in the first place. Barcaldine Pupils help fell the Oban Christmas Tree
Last week pupils from Barcaldine Primary School were in Sutherland’s Grove setting up their Sgoil na Coilltean (School in the Woods). While they were surveying the woodland with Rory MacLean (Forestry Commission Scotland) for trees that could be felled, they were invited to assist with the Health and Safety operations for the felling of the Oban Christmas tree with Rory and Argyll and Bute Council.

Strone Primary School Superheroes for a day!
From Wonder Woman to Superman, Batman to Super Gran, Strone Primary School pupils dressed up as Superheroes for Children in Need. From donations and sales of Pudsey merchandise £95.00 was raised for the charity.

Indian Food Tasting at Kirn Primary
Well done to Kirn Primary’s P2 class who tried a range of delicious Indian foods, prepared by our talented catering team. P2 have been studying India as part of their topic, and what better way to find out about Indian food than to come and taste some.
Children in Need
Primary 7s at Rothesay Primary organised a Bring and Buy Sale, held a Pudsey raffle, sold popcorn and Pudsey merchandise, raising a whopping £1060.50! This is the most money we have raised for Children in Need! Well done to the pupils of Primary 7 and all the adults who helped on the day. We also appreciate all the items that families donated to the sale, thank you!
Sushi for Afternoon Tea at Kirn Primary
Our Japan topic really came to life today as we went to the kitchens to make our own Sushi.
Sushi is a Japanese food made from sticky rice, which is rolled up in a seaweed sheet around vegetables or fish, then cut into short lengths. We also tasted some yellow and red Miso Soup, made from soya beans.

Remembrance Poppies at Toward Primary School
We were inspired at Toward Primary School by the Tower Bridge poppies to make our own clay poppies to commemorate the end of the WW1. We have also made a poppy wreath which we will lay at the Memorial at Innellan on Remembrance Day.

Dunoon Grammar School Numeracy News
On Wednesday 29th October a group of pupils from the S3 Numeracy project attended a Challenge Day at Clydeview Academy. The pupils spent the day working in teams, made up of both schools, trying to solve logic puzzles and problem solving questions. Pupils from both schools worked very hard to be part of the winning team but with only two unsolved puzzles and more than half of the problem solving puzzles correct the winning team included Briege Liddell and Evan Meyer-McDonagh from DGS. Breakthrough Bake Off at Port Charlotte!
Pictured are children at Port Charlotte school dressed in pink for our recent Breakthrough Breast Cancer Bake Sale. All the children in the school and pre5 unit had spent the week baking a variety of delicious goodies and on the Friday members of the local community were invited into the school for tea and a cake sale. Over forty visitors came and enjoyed our cakes and a display of individual project work by P3/4/5. We were delighted with the fantastic amount of £349 which we raised for Breakthrough and we’d like to thank everyone who helped with baking and donations
AFRICAN DRUMMING WORKSHOPS ARE AMAZING!
A recent visit to Rosneath Primary School by Chief Chebe from African Arts in Glasgow had the “joint jumpin'”. What a wonderful learning experience.
The day began with a whole school Assembly related to Black History Month as part of our school’s Global Citizenship journey. The children were amazed at just how far some children have to walk in African countries to collect clean drinking water.
Road Safety at Rothesay Joint Campus
The Eco Committee has been working with PC Heather Simpson on the 20 mph speed limit area outside the school. Heather told the pupils that when the lights flash it means that drivers are reminded to be aware of pupils traveling to or from school and to slow down.
Red Hot at St. Joseph’s!
Last week the children of St Joseph’s were delighted to welcome to school Craig Munro, a member of the band ‘The Red Hot Chilli Pipers’. Craig was in fact taking part in a partnership programme which had been set up by Mrs McLean who specialises in Technology at St. Joseph’s. Mrs McLean had written to parents and family members to ask if any engineers would come into school and give the children a presentation on the life of an engineer.

Primary 7 of Dalintober Primary School have had a very busy start to session 2014-2015.
During September and October they have been involved in a “Smoke Free Me” presentation by Raenbow Productions, organised a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support which raised £286.73 and visited a First World War Exhibition in Campbeltown’s Heritage Centre.

Really Small Scientists Win Prizes
Following the Nano-Science workshop in September, Primary 3 and 4 pupils from Dunoon Primary School produced posters about Nano-Jelly. During the workshop, run by the Really Small Science Group from Strathclyde University, the pupils became ‘Really Small Scientists’ for the day and learned about the world of Nano-Science. They discovered how everyday items such as jelly and even their own bodies are made up of tiny nano-sized molecules.

Victorian’s trip
Primary Six pupils at Rhu Primary School journeyed back in time to find out what life was like for Victorian children.
The class visited New Lanark Heritage Centre, which was well-worth the slightly longer travel time. New Lanark is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and proved a perfect venue to stimulate interest in this 18th Century topic.

Trip to Tesco
The children went on a trip to Tesco this week and this is some information about it.
The children of Clachan and Skipness Primary Schools have started their latest IDL of food and religion. They began with a WOW day which took them away from school. Tesco had invited them to spend the day in their Campbeltown shop. The children were very excited to discover that there was more the Tesco than they see when they go on their shopping trips with their parents.
Castlehill Primary visit Muneroy Tearooms
P7 pupils from Castlehill Primary recently visited Muneroy Tearooms as part of their work leading up to the Kintyre Fun Food Festival event which will take place in CGS on the evening of Wednesday 19th November. The class had read of Francis and Ian’s success at the Scottish Baking Awards. Fifteen pupils travelled down to Southend to present them with a “Congratulations” card and to interview Francis herself.

As a conclusion to their IDL (Inter disciplinary Learning) of Eco, the children of Clachan and Skipness Primary Schools put on a show stopping performance. As part of their learning the children had completed either a beach clean or a litter walk around their village.
Teacher locks P5 up in jail
P5s in Dunoon Primary School went to Inverary Jail on Wednesday as part of their Scotland topic. They got there by two mini buses. When they got to the jail the children got changed into prisoner’s outfits and went to the Court Room to listen to some cases. After the Court Room they went to the Airing Yard. The Airing Yard is where the prisoners did exercises like running and walking. Next they went to the Old Jail; it was sort of cold but it’s a lot different nowadays.
Skipness and Clachan Schools News
Wee Cup of Tea – Macmillan Coffee Afternoon
The children of Skipness Primary School had a wonderful time on Thursday 25th September. They spent the morning preparing delicious cupcakes with green icing which were to be sold in the afternoon to their many visitors. The school also received many delicious delights from the parents and residents of Skipness. Even though it was a drizzly day, this did not prevent people from joining the children for their “wee cup of tea”.
