Last week the children of St Joseph’s were delighted to welcome to school Craig Munro, a member of the band ‘The Red Hot Chilli Pipers’. Craig was in fact taking part in a partnership programme which had been set up by Mrs McLean who specialises in Technology at St. Joseph’s. Mrs McLean had written to parents and family members to ask if any engineers would come into school and give the children a presentation on the life of an engineer.
We were inundated with responses from mums and dads and family members who were mechanical, chemical and structural engineers. As owner of Wallace Bagpipes Ltd., Craig gave an excellent presentation on the engineering involved in the making of bagpipes. An uncle of two of the children in school, Craig was delighted to come along.
Mrs McLean intends to present the children for the STEM leadership award which requires them to learn about engineering as a career first. This year Mrs McLean decided to get assistance from parents and family members ………and it turned out to be a great success! Partnership working at its best!
At the end of the morning Craig gave a performance on the bagpipes to the whole school – a Red Hot Chili Piper exclusive! It was a really fun way to involve family learning here at St. Joseph’s.
It was lovely to hear the sound of the bagpipes coming from the lunch hall!
Having engineers in the school has been a great way for children to see how their learning relates to real life and real careers.
