What a week in Primary 1…

Literacy

This week in literacy we learned about the capital letter ‘W’, recapped some sounds we learned earlier and wrote about what we did on the weekend. The friendly Dragon received some nice letters from us, explaining what the fairy-tale “The three little pigs” is about – we are sure he loved them. Throughout the whole week, we have been covering our topic of fairy tales! Our teachers were very impressed with our book reports about our favourite fairy tale.

Numeracy

We have spent the week practising counting up and down from any number from 100, counting in 2’s,3’s, 5’s and 10’s and recognising numbers above 100. As well as that, we revised telling the time using an analogue and a digital clock and a little bit about sharing things equally.

Health and Wellbeing

This week is Health and Wellbeing week, and on Thursday it was outdoor classroom day. We spent the whole day learning outside – it was great fun! Also, on Tuesday, we had a Judo session in school! As well as that, we did some mindfulness and drawing.

Topic

As we mentioned above, our topic is Fairyland. Together, we discussed our ideas on how we think the castle in fairyland would look like and drew a picture along with it. We listened to the story “The three little pigs” and talked about how each character could have felt.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

P1 Teachers

Another busy week in P1- please read what we have learnt recently.

Literacy

Just like every Monday, we wrote our weekend news, beginning it with: At the weekend I… We tried to remember what we were doing over the weekend and we remembered about all the success criteria: capital letters when needed, finger spaces, full stops and of course a connective ‘and’ – easy peasy :-). We also recapped our knowledge about the sound ‘igh’ by writing some words with it: e.g. right, light, night etc. We have made more posters persuading about the dangerous litter in the sea and practised writing sentences that our teachers dictated to us.

Numeracy

We were counting forwards and backwards from a given number. We were practising to work out the number before/after/between and we were counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s and recalled double facts up to 20. We were learning about big, small, bigger, smaller, biggest, smallest. It was good fun! We learnt how to use non-standard units to measure objects.

Topic – Under the Sea

More sea creatures- a ‘Star Fish’ this week. We know many facts about starfish and how to draw this beautiful animal.

RERC

We learnt about the Last Supper – which was the day before Jesus Christ died on the cross. We know now that the Last Supper was a feast that Jesus had with his disciples and one of them (called Judas Iscariot) betrayed Jesus. Yesterday, we learnt about St Patrick who is a very famous and great saint as well as the patron saint of Ireland.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Primary 1’s Week of Learning-10.02.22

We have had a super week!

In Literacy, we have been revising our sounds and balloon words and using them to write short sentences. Our teachers are very impressed that we can do this, as well as remembering to use finger spaces and full stops. Wow! We have been reading our new books at home and in school, and we are noticing our sight words in the stories. We were learning about capital letters, so we know now when to use them correctly. We also wrote an imaginative story about: ‘A visit to the vet’. We were happy to write a few sentences, using our success criteria and tried to use the connective ‘and’ – it was not very tricky for us at all!

In Numeracy, we have been learning to count forwards and backwards to 30 in 2s and up to 100 in 5s and 10s. We were practising number bonds for 10 and 20. We also continued to practise addition and subtraction using Rekenreks and Numicon, 10 frames, number tracks and, also number lines. Some of us can now do this independently. We are successful and confident learners! We started to learn about data using pictograms, which we found a ‘piece of cake’ (get it?).

We have also enjoyed some STEM as we became inventors! We were learning about Scottish inventors e.g. Alexander Graham Bell ( who invented the telephone), Charles Macintosh( who invented the raincoat) or John Logie Baird ( who invented the television). We designed our own rockets, flying cars, shelters, phones and teddies. We had lots of fun doing this all out of recycled materials!

HWB- In PE we were practising our gymnastic skills! We found it very fun and sometimes tricky! This week is called Children’s Mental Health Week, so today we had a chance to ‘dress to express’ – and we loved it! This could happen every Friday! We were learning how to be a good friend and what we need to do to improve our ‘ good friendship skills’. We now know what to do.

In RE we were learning about Jesus and his 12 disciples, we know that most of them were very good friends to Jesus!

Have a good long weekend everyone!

We had a great week!

We had a great week! Our new topic is fantastic! ‘Scotland’. Read on to find out what else we have been up to.

Literacy

As well as revising lots of sounds previously taught, we learnt two new sounds this week: ‘oy’ e.g.(boy, toy, enjoy) and ‘ow’ e.g.(bow, row, show). Both of these sounds appear in lots of words, (as we found out)! Now that we have a bank of sounds in our heads, we are writing more and more each day and using our knowledge of these sounds to help us to sound out words when we are reading too. We are becoming more confident at writing independently and giving writing a go. Our teachers are VERY proud of us all ( like always)!

Numeracy

We have been practising how to tell the time using o’clock and half past, which we are becoming really good at. We also learn about digital clocks, we know that half-past finishes with -:30) and o clock finishes with-:00).  We have also been practising subtraction using the number line and the Rekenrek.

Health and Wellbeing

We continue to learn how to skip in P.E. and again, it was easier for some of us than others. Skipping is really good as it helps with balance, jumping and coordination and it is fun!

Topic

Scotland- Woohoo!!! ‘Rabbie’ Burn’s day was on the 25th of January of course; so on this day, we had a great time tasting Scottish foods (Shortbread, oatcakes, Irn-Bru). We learned some dance steps, sang songs, and designed our own tartan kilts and Scottish flags.

RE

We were learning that God invites us to show love to others. We know that God loves everybody and He wants us to love others. We know that we can show love by being kind and showing respect to our families and friends. It is good also to share our toys, help out at home, take care of other people’s property and have good manners.

Thank you for reading our blog, have a nice weekend.

Primary 1.

Learning in Primary 1 (week beginning 15th November 2021)

Literacy

This week we learned about the letter ‘W’ as well as practised the sounds that, we have learned beforehand through colouring, craft activities, and reading. We wrote our own books about Floppy and Kipper. In addition, as it is World Nursery Rhyme week, we learned about rhyming words and even made our own rhymes! Our teachers were so impressed!

Numeracy

We focused on using different concrete materials (Rekenrek, Numicons, Flashcards, 100 square, etc.) and explored different ways of making the number 10. Additionally, we were using the number line in our learning how to add two numbers together. We kept practising counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Learning across the Curriculum

As it is Catholic Education Week, we were learning about our Parish in Broxburn and all of us now know that Father Jeremy is our Parish Priest. We were surprised to find out that the church is called St John Cantius and St Nicholas – that is how our school is named! In addition, our teachers showed us pictures of our church and we coloured in a stained glass window templates. We also learned about St. Margaret, Queen of Scotland, as her feast was on the 16th of November. We found out that she was a very good person.

Have a lovely weekend,

P1 Teachers

Learning in Primary 1 (Week Beginning 8th November)

Literacy

This week, as well as recapping our previous sounds, we also learned some new ones. Our new sounds this week were: ‘ee’, ‘l’ and ‘r’ – and we had lots of fun learning these sounds through colouring, writing on whiteboards and arts and crafts! We also did big writing this week on Thursday – our teachers were very impressed with our sentence and describing skills. Also, we read our reading books everyday – we love reading!

Numeracy

We know that numbers are everywhere in the world – that is why we understand how important it is to know and recognise them. This week we learned (and revised!) about number sequences up to 20 as well as recognising all the numbers from 0 to 20. Our teachers were very proud of our progress – and we were very proud too:) Furthermore, we practised our addition skills using Rekenreks and recognising the number of objects.

Learning Across the Curriculum

On Thursday 11th of November, it was Remembrance Day. To honour everyone who died at war, we held a 2 – minute silence. We are very thankful to all those soldiers that had lost their lives to fight for us, so we made our own Poppies and Crosses.

Also, as Christmas is getting closer and closer, we have started preparing for our Nativity! We love such fun practising all the songs.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Kind Regards,

P1 teachers.

P6’s Busy Week! w.b. 27.09.21

Maths- In maths we have been learning about rounding to 5 digits. We enjoyed playing a game of ‘High 5’ to practise the rounding rule. We used our estimation skills to solve the answers to 3 digit multiplied by two digit numbers then used a calculator to solve the answer. We also played noughts and crosses and we worked in trios to round numbers. In Number Talks, we revised the doubles and near doubles strategy.

Literacy- We chose our Accelerated Reader books this week and enjoyed reading these when we completed our Literacy tasks. We completed a Reciprocal Reading task with our group based on our homework chapters. For Writing, we created our own imaginative stories about Moses and the Israelites travelling to the Promised Land.

HWB- In PE, we have begun our hockey skills block, we worked at different stations to practise our dribbling and really enjoyed this! We also worked on our basketball skills with Miss Melrose. We also completed our Learners’ Statement this week.

Topic- We began to look at our new Space topic. We watched some videos about planets, we learned the order of the planets and their sizes- we really enjoyed watching a video that compared the sizes of the planets and the stars.

RERC- We have been reflecting on why we sing hymns. We had to look up Bible passages and complete the missing sentences to help us see the links to singing and praising God throughout the Bible.

Art- We are beginning to prepare for our assembly and have created some artwork linked to the lives of Moses and the Israelites for this.

Spanish- We have been learning the vocabulary for our family. We then had a go at creating a family tree using our vocabulary that we have learned. We enjoyed this but it was a bit challenging to work out where to place some of our family members!

We had a great week in P2, see what we did below :)

We were doing some handwriting and later to see if our handwriting has improved, we wrote about our weekends and practised our spelling words. We wrote about our dream holiday and the one we liked best from the past as well as learning how to write info reports – it was really interesting! We also learned an important part of writing – similes and metaphors. We now know their meanings and how to use them (e.g. She is a star (metaphor) He is as tall as a tree (simile)).

We revised our division and taking away, tall things and smaller things. Shorter things and longer things etc.

In RE we were learning about Mary and the Holy Spirit as well as having a class discussion on the importance of prayers.

We were outside a lot since the weather was beautiful! Sports day was amazing too, we danced in class. We also did some posters about moving to P3 and we discovered that it is a great way of finding out how we feel about things.

Have a lovely weekend – one more week to go!

Kind regards,

Mrs Koziel

Great week in P2!

In maths, we have been reviewing some of the knowledge gained in P2 e.g. adding using a 100 square, multiplying, dividing, subtracting, positive and negative numbers on the number line and much more…

In literacy, we have been drawing and writing cards for Father’s day, and we know now a new sound ‘e-e’, for example : these, here, eve, Steve, complete, even. Like every week, we were practising our handwriting too! This time we were focusing on the letters Ee and Ff.

In Spanish, we were learning how to say and write the days of the week and months of the year, it was a little tricky but we did great.

During our HWB lesson and our topic ‘Healthy body- healthy mind,’ we were learning about how important it is to regularly exercise. We also had a dance competition – it was good fun!

In PE we had a wonderful time playing dodge ball, also we did our ‘mile a day’ almost every day as the weather was beautiful!

In science we were learning about some small creatures, we know that insects have 6 legs, female mosquitoes bite people as well as other animals, and we know that our world could not exist without bees!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Mrs Koziel

Lots of work in P2!

In maths, we were revising our knowledge about kilograms and grams and taking away whilst using a 100 square to help us. We were also doing number talks where we used 10 frames to help us and we practised the partitioning strategy.

In literacy, we did our spelling test! We were all a little bit nervous but we think that it went well 🙂         We also wrote our weekend news and we presented our stories with Scottish words.

We continued our mini-beast hunt! It was really fun! We also know that a food chain consists of producers, prey, predators and consumers.

In RE we were learning about Corpus Christi as you know, this Sunday is the feast of Corpus Christi.

Lastly, we took part in some races for sports day – we love to exercise!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Mrs Koziel

Yet another busy week in P2!

In maths, we were revising our knowledge about acute, obtuse and right angles. We also learned about greater than >, less than < and equal to =, signs and we used these to help us compare the sizes of different angles. As well as that, we were learning about kilograms and grams. We were using a scale to check how heavy various objects are. We were counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and to help us with number talks, we used ten frames.

In literacy, we were writing our senses poem about spring and because we were learning about onomatopoeia (words that describe different sounds e.g. woof, bang, ping etc.), we included that in our poem too. Of course, we practised our handwriting too and practised the second hundred’s fry’s words. Some of our pupils presented the stories they wrote at home, those stories were special as they had to contain Scottish words.

In R.E., we were learning about the miracles performed by Jesus and we watched bible stories about that.

There are many living things around us, and not all of them are humans. For science, we went on a minibeast hunt! It was so fun! We used a magnifying glass to get a closer look at the little creatures and marked them off on our worksheets. We’ll continue the work next week. 🙂

For health and wellbeing, we were talking about good friendships, what they are made up of and what skills we need to possess to be a good friend.

We all know how important it is to have lots of exercises. For P.E. Mr Muldoon took us outside and we were throwing bean bags!

Kind Regards,

Mrs Koziel

Busy week in P2 :-)

This week in literacy, we wrote our weekend news, learned about different rhymes and practised our spelling with the well–known strategy, ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’. Also, we did our personal statements (What I am best at, what I am proud of and what I have improved on.)

This week, we were taught about angles. We know now that an acute angle is under 90 degrees, a right angle is exactly 90 degrees and an obtuse angle is over 90 degrees, but below 180. Additionally, we practised some division and we were making 26 with the most efficient strategy possible.

Our continuous topic is Health and Wellbeing, Resilience. We know that a resilient person is one, who never gives up, always tries best, knows that after a ‘down’ in life, there is always an ‘up’. We were VERY resilient too – when we were doing the ‘mile a day ’. Although it was quite hot and doing 6 whole laps around the field is quite tiresome, we managed it in the end 🙂

As you may know, Pope Francis has asked everyone to pray to the Virgin Mary to end the coronavirus pandemic, therefore, we were praying to Mary, too.

It’s fun learning another language! This week we were still revising our knowledge of how to say numbers, colours and simple greetings in Spanish.

Lastly, we painted our very own pictures of the Eiffel Tower painting by George Seurat using paint and cotton swabs. Our paintings were very good, not as good as his!

Have a lovely weekend – and remember; we have Monday off! 🙂

Kind Regards,

Anna Koziel

Busy week in P2….

This week we were learning about division – we used concrete materials, games and Number Talk strategies to help us consolidate knowledge better – we also revised our previous maths knowledge.

In literacy, we wrote special friendship recipes (e.g. add a pinch of compliments, a big dollop of smiles, one cup of understanding and 2 tablespoons of care and support. Mix them all together in your heart) and on Monday we wrote our weekend news. We loved learning some Scottish words! Here are some that we learned; auld – old, bonnie – beautiful, braw – good and wheesht – quiet – that’s Mrs Koziel’s favourite word because she uses it a lot.

To prepare for the challenges of P3, we have been working extra – hard on our handwriting.

Since yesterday was Ascension Day, we have learned all about it. Pope Francis has asked for all of us to pray for the end of the pandemic, so we were praying to our Lady using the prayer ‘Hail Mary’.

To help us improve our Spanish, we have learned to say ‘a Home–packed lunch, please’ it’s: ‘La tartera, por favor’, when we order our lunches at school. Of course, we still practise the days of the week and colours in Spanish, also.

Our Sunflower is growing beautifully too! Their growth was recorded in our ‘Sunflower diary’.

Have a great weekend everyone.

We decided to bring our water bottles as much as we can but if we forget, we are going to use just one plastic cup per day. The cups will have our names written on them so we will know who has which cup. We also decided to not moan when we have to wear clothes after siblings and that it is a good idea to give the clothes that are too small for us to charity. It will help our Earth definitely.

Snapshots of our week in P3!

This week P3 and P3/2 have been very busy learning lots, keep reading to find out what we got up to:

  • Maths- We have continued our Money topic this week. We have been learning how to estimate the cost of things. We know that an estimate is a guess. We have also learned to partition using ten frames e.g. 10 is made of 9 +1.
  • Literacy- In Reading we have been answering Blooms Button questions about our stories. In Writing, we have continued to learn about Recounts and we wrote our own about tidying our rooms and we will use this to help us at home.
  • Health & Wellbeing- We have been learning all about our emotions. This week we listened to a story called ‘My Many Coloured Days’ by Dr Suess. We then matched up the colours with emotions e.g. blue represents sadness. We created new characters that would fit in to the book based on the emotion we were given.  In PE, we played Eliminator and we also did some fitness drills.
  • Topic- We continued our Sun, Moon & Stars topic. We learned the way that the Sun, Earth and Moon orbit each other. We now know that this is the reason we have day and night.
  • Art- We created a picture of the Sun, Moon and Earth showing their sizes and their positions. We used oil pastels and focused on light and shade to show day and night on Earth.
  • RERC- We learned all about Remembrance Day. We know this is a day where we think and pray for those who passed away in war.
  • Music & Drama- Miss Doolan helped us to learn all about rhythm, we went outdoors and created rhythms using outdoor objects like sticks and stones.

Have a look at what we have done.

  • This week we were practising our sentences and we remembered about capital letters, finger spaces, adjectives, and full stops. Also, we were learning about the sound ‘ee’, ‘oo’ and ‘ck’ as well as reviewing the previous sounds which we have learnt before. In our Big Writing, we wrote a ‘Friendship Recipe’ and that was a very interesting experience. We were learning about past tense (eg. adding ‘ed’ at the end of a word or changing  ‘go to went, see to saw, buy to bought’ etc.)
  • We also were learning about differences between a fact and opinion. We know that a fact must be proven and opinion is only our point of view.
  • At Maths we practised counting in 2s forward and backwards and we were looking for the most effective way to make a number using the Rekenrek.
  • We were working hard to learn how to analyse data using pictures and Bar Graphs and also Tally Charts.
  • In RE we were learning about All Saints and All Souls Day. We were praying for the people who died in our families.

Wow! What a week for Primary 2! Take a look at what we have been up to…

We have been talking about our trusted adults and we have chosen 2 from home and 3 from school.

Our teacher read us a book called ‘The Gruffalo’ (which was amazing!). Next, we played ‘Gruffalo Corners’ and ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf’. We revised common words and played fun outdoor word games too!

We have designed our class charter and we now know all our rights, also we have been drawing self-portraits to decorate our classroom doors.

We have been practising math sums with a missing number along with adding and later we had a bit of R.E., where we learned about Noah’s Ark and prayed to God for our families, friends and ourselves!

Our Health and Wellbeing is a very important part of us that is why we spent the time to learn about all the different emotions and SHANARRI. We know all the indicators: S- Safe, H- Healthy, A-Active, N- Nurtured, A-Achieving, R- Respected, R-Responsible, I- Included

Of course, we are still practising our handwashing skills since we all know, how important it is especially at this time.

Have a lovely weekend and see you on Monday, everyone!

Mrs Koziel

Short but very busy week for P2…

We have completed our first week in our school and already working hard to get our classroom set up for the year ahead. We had a lesson about hygiene practice, how to wash our hands properly and how to avoid Coronavirus as best as we can. We know that we need to wash our hands before entering the classroom, after changing shoes, before and after every meal, before and after playtime and of course after using the toilet. It means that we need to wash our hands as many times as we can.

On the first day, we had lovely time learning outside. The weather  was beautiful that day. We were learning some maths and practicing letter formation using chalks whilst having fun.

We had a chance to watch ‘The Story of Moses’ in the Bible for Beginners and we tried to draw a picture to reflect on what we have noticed in the story.

Today we had a wonderful time practising our number bonds up to 10 and we recapped some of the sounds. Later we had some free-choice time where we played outside.

We are excitedly looking forward to the next week of learning. There will be lots of hard work ahead but also lots of fun, we can’t wait!

Fitness Fortnight Week 2 (1)

Fitness Fortnight in P3- Let the Games Begin! (w.b. 15.06.20)

Primary 3 have had great fun this week completing challenges from the first week of our virtual fitness fortnight. So far we have made house banners for Sports day, completed a fruit and vegetable taste quiz and completed some maths and literacy activities that incorporate exercise such as spelling our names workout and estimating and measuring how far we can throw an object. We are also thinking about our mental health and completing mindfulness activities too.

Friday was our virtual sports day- we have had lots of fun throughout the week completing as many challenges as we can (and getting our families involved) to earn points for our house!

Keep up the hard work P3-not long to go until the holidays now!

P2’s Fitness Fortnight busy week…

  Fitness fortnight in P2

As you may know, fitness fortnight has started and now we have already gone through half of it! Have a look below and see how P2 got on…

When you think of sport you usually think of physical exercise and nothing more but, with the help of some pens and markers, we included literacy in our week by making incredible sports day banners! As well as that, we made an acrostic poem to the word HEALTHY and created mind-blowing posters about the importance of healthy eating.

Along with literacy comes maths and yes, you guessed it- we did an outstanding job with that too by doing activities like,  throwing bean bag (and other safe, soft objects) and estimating how far we threw them. Next -with a hand from an adult – we measured them exactly and checked how close we were with our estimation! Also, we set a timer and saw how long it takes us to do 20 squats then rounding the seconds from the timer to the nearest whole number (if we could). We made a circuit and timed how long it took us to get through it along with all the members of our family, later trying to beat our time!

What’s fitness fortnight without some plain old sport? With the help of YouTube, we have done a workout with ‘Jumpstart Jonny’ or ‘Joe Wick’s’ and ‘Just Dance’ too! Later we had a lesson to learn some martial arts! As well as spelling out our name by doing different types of exercises and taking a time to step back by taking part in the ‘Cosmic Zen Den’ video.

On top of all this, we did an exciting taste quiz to explore different foods and made activities or games to share with all the other boys and girls.

Phew! What a busy week!

P2 Home Learning

P2 have had another busy week. Here are some of the things we have been learning:

  • In literacy we have been learning to write setting descriptions. We had  to describe the picture given to us by using lots of adjectives.
  • We had to read a passage and spot the silly words. Then we had to think of more sensible words to replace them.
  • In maths we were learning about multiplication. We have been looking at repeated addition and arrays to help us work out multiplication questions.
  • We also looked at sharing things equally between different sized groups using concrete materials.
  • In Health and Wellbeing we looked at not giving up. We had to think of something we found hard then draw a picture and write down advice for yourself or to help someone else achieve this.
  • As part of our Living Things topic we created posters about our favourite animals and presented them to our families. We had to make sure we spoke clearly and loudly and looked at our audience.
  • In RE we watched a video about God speaking to Moses. We then wrote about what happened and drew a picture.
  • In Drama we watched a video and acted out the Three Billy Goats Gruff.
  • We we learned different body parts in Spanish to help us play along to the Harry Potter theme tune.

Home Learning week 10

Fantastic Learning in P3! (W.B. 1.06.20)

P3 have had another fantastic week of home learning. Keep reading to find out more.

  • Literacy– we have continued to learn new spelling patterns this week and have been practising our words through Active Spelling activities. We are continuing to develop our note taking skills using Newsround, we then discussed what we had watched with our families. To develop our comprehension skills we have completed some Reflective Reading tasks like ‘Spot the Silly Word’ and completed a Task Map on toy adverts. We are continuing to read books for enjoyment and we created mini flip books of our favourite stories. We used an Authors Live episode as a stimulus for writing this week, creating our own adventure stories.
  • Maths– We are continuing to use Sumdog and other games to develop our Numeracy skills. In Number Talks, we learned more about the ‘friendly numbers’ strategy and practised this at home. We have been learning about volume this week, we know that we measure volume in litres and millilitres. We enjoyed doing practical activities to develop our measurement skills such as making our own scales using bottles and filling jugs with different amounts of water.
  • Health & Wellbeing- We continued to learn about the importance of Growth Mindset this week. We listened to the story ‘I Can’t Do That…YET!’ and drew pictures of things we can do just now and something we would like to learn to do. Some of our boys and girls have completed some sports challenges while they’ve been at home-completing a charity run and a football skills challenge- well done!
  • Social Studies- In our Ancient Egyptians topic this week we have learned all about the Gods and Goddesses. We did some research on BBC Bitesize and played a game as well as using a table to answer questions.
  • Science- This week we have continued our Inheritence topic. This week we learned how animals are classified into families. We watched a video and then created posters for each animal family with details of characteristics and the animals in the family.
  • Art- we are continuing to learn about the visual elements. This week we created a sunset landscape and focused on the elements of line, pattern and colour.
  • RERC- This week we have been learning about Jesus’ Twelve Apostles. We watched a video which taught us the twelve special friends that Jesus had. We used our knowledge to create a picture and labelled each of the apostles. We also learned about Patron Saints, researching St Andrew (our national saint), St Nicholas (our school saint) and St John Cantius (our parish saint). We know Saints were people who committed their lives to serving God and helping others.
  • Technologies- Our technology challenge this week was to compare technology in the past and present. We asked our parents about the technology they had growing up and compared this to what we use now. We used Google Images with our parents help to find pictures of past technology.

Well done for all of your hard work P3- keep it up!

Another busy week in P2…

Primary 2 had a very busy week. Have a look at what we have done at home…

  • We were learning about the meaning of ‘non-fiction’, we wrote interesting facts in our jotters.
  • Rainbow writing is a fun strategy that we used to make us more confident in our spelling. We used the website ‘Doorway speller’ to practice our common words.
  • Learning to describe things in writing as well as speaking is very important. That is why we practised using adjectives to describe our favourite book characters.
  • Imagine you were asked to split a pizza in half for your other friend. You would have to know how to split things in half. Luckily we know how to do this because we were practising splitting things in half all week.
  • As well as that, we made sure that we will not forget all the things that we have learnt throughout the week by playing the ‘Sumdog’ challenge and filling out a worksheet about halves and quarters that our teachers have set for us.
  • ‘Lunes, Martes, Miercoles…’ these are some days of the week in Spanish. P2 already know what they mean since we practised this by listening to a video on YouTube.
  • An international language is a language that lots of people around the world can understand at least a bit. Through expressive arts, we can talk about our feelings in a way that is easy to understand. This is why we watched a video about ‘Jack and the beanstalk’ and joined in along with our families.
  • Staying fit is key to leading a healthy life. To help us, we did a Go Noodle activity which was found on YouTube.
  • We all have most likely seen an ant before, but – how much do we know about them? Lots now! This is because we have learned about Minibeasts for science and then watched a video to learn some facts about ants! Later, we also learned about what plants need to survive.
  • For RERC, we looked at Psalm 65: 9-13 and contemplated it, praying with our family. Also, we watched a video on YouTube about how God spoke to Moses and later talked about it with our family. Next, we drew a picture of what happened. Some of us even wrote a few sentences to go along with it!

Home Learning week 8

Super Learning in P3! (w.b.18.5.20)

Primary 3 have had a busy week completing lots of home learning tasks, read on to see what we have been up to this week.

  • In Literacy, we learned new spelling patterns and practised our words throughout the week with active spelling tasks. We wrote a diary entry about what we did with our day off. We have continued to read lots of stories while we are learning at home and we created our own comprehension task by choosing some Blooms questions. We have also created a play script for a well known story and had fun acting these out. We are beginning to work on our dictionary skills and continued to practise putting words into alphabetical order.
  • In Maths, we have been playing Sumdog to practise our numeracy skills- a special well done to P3b who managed to place in the top 20 for the West Lothian Sumdog competition. Miss McCormack is very proud of you! We continued our time topic, where we learned how to read and create timetables. We began to look at measurement, focusing on length. We thought about why it is important to use standard measurements, had a go at measuring objects in our homes and played some Topmarks games to test our knowledge.
  • In Health & Wellbeing, we researched healthy recipes using the internet and recipe books to create a healthy meal for our families.
  • In Social Studies, we continued to learn about the Ancient Egyptians, this week we learned all about Hieroglyphics, we know that this is the Ancient Egyptian alphabet and is made up of pictures and symbols. We wrote names, designed signs for rooms in our homes and even had a go at writing a letter using hieroglyphics for someone else to crack.
  • In Art, we learned all about the artist, James Rizzi. We looked at a piece of his art work and thought about what we liked and disliked about it. We then had a go at creating our own cityscapes based on his work. This helped us to learn about the visual elements of colour, line, form and tone.
  • In RERC, we created our own prayer of thanks to God as well. We know that the work Eucharist means Thanksgiving.
  • In Science, we learned about Inheritance. We know that this means characteristics that are passed on through our genes. We looked at pictures of our family that we had at home and tried to work out which characteristics were shared in our families like hair or eye colour.
  • Our Technology challenge this week was to think like an engineer. We know engineers design things that solve problems. Our task this week was to design an invention that could be used to solve a problem in our own homes. We drew labelled diagrams and some of us had a go at designing a prototype product.

Keep up the hard work Primary Three, we love seeing all of your pictures. You continue to make us proud every day!

Super Learning in P3! (w.b. 11.5.20)

Primary Three have been working very hard this week. We are very impressed by the positive attitude that you continue to show in your learning!

In Literacy, we learned new spelling patterns through active spelling tasks. In Reading, we have been digging deeper into texts by using our Blooms Buttons to answer questions but also to create comic strips of a plot.  We continued to watch Newsround to develop our note taking skills and we used our notes to create our own version of Newsround. In Writing, we watched David Walliams read some of his book, ‘Gangsta Granny’ which we used as inspiration to create our own adventure stories using a family member as the main character.

In Maths, we learned all about Time. We know how to read a clock and some of us have had a go at adding time. We created a flyer for a fair and had to timetable all of the different events. We revised our knowledge of the seasons looking at the months, weather and wildlife you might expect to see. We used exercise to develop our estimation skills, guessing how many we could do in a set time and then having another go using a timer. We used this information to complete a table. We created a time table of our daily routines.

In Health and Wellbeing, we thought about different occasions that people would eat together. We created a set of rules for our dinner hall based on what we know about table manners.

In Social Studies, we learned more about Ancient Egyptians. We researched the River Nile and why it was so important to the Egyptians. We learned about a tool they used called a Shaduf and researched how to create our own. We also researched everyday life in Ancient Egypt and compared it to our own. We used the information we had gathered to complete a table.

In Science, we have been learning about Water. This week we created our own diagram to show the Water Cycle and how rain is created. Some of us completed an experiment to create rain in a bowl.

In Art, we learned about the artist Heather Galler. We looked at one of her famous paintings and discussed what other paintings of flowers we know. We used materials we had at home to create our own versions of the painting. This helped us learn about colour, tone, line and pattern.

Our Technology challenge this week was to design and create a chair using materials we had at home. We sat a toy on it to check it worked and made adaptions if it was too weak or too small.

We know that May is the Month of Our Lady. In RERC this week we have been learning to pray a decade of the Rosary to Mary. We looked at icons and pictures of Our Lady from around the world and drew our own picture of her. We know that Mary has many different names. We listened to three different hymns about her and wrote down all of the names she was called. We wrote these around her picture.

P2 Home Learning Week 6

We were learning to write character descriptions. We completed a character description about a witch using lots of different    adjectives.

To develop our Spanish we used a video from YouTube to teach us how to say different greetings. Later we revised them with an adult.

We started a new topic this week called Living Things. We learned the difference between Living and Non-Living things. Living things are alive e.g. plants, people, animals and non-living things are objects/ items for example, door, table, TV, tablets.

We also learned about what Living things need to be able to survive. We know that living things need: Food, Water, Air, Shelter and Sunlight.

This month is the month of Mary. We have been practising saying the Hail Mary and are going to say it every day for the month of May. We also watched a video to learn more about Mary.

As part of our resilience topic, we were looking at respecting ourselves. With our families we discussed our strengths and qualities, if there were similarities and differences between us and why everyone can’t be good at everything. We then shared something that we would like to improve on.

This week we worked on our fitness by doing a ‘What’s your name?’ workout. We had to do a different exercise for every letter of our name.
