P2 love to read!

This week in P2, we were really excited to send home our reading teddies Charlie and Paddington. Lena and Joshua took them home this week and have been reading them lots of stories. Soon, the bears will be going home with someone new!

We also visited the library and Diane, the librarian, was very impressed with how sensible we are and what super readers we are.

Aroush- I like reading ‘The Big Bunny Surprise!’

Lena P- I like reading my school books.

Owen- I read the Titanic on my Kindle.

Elias- I read this as well on my Kindle too!

Danyal- My daddy reads a newspaper!

Daniel- I’ve got a new book and I’m excited to read it. It is called ‘The Train To Impossible Places!’

David- I like reading ‘The Bug In The Rug’.

Weronika- I like reading Biff, Chip and Kipper books using the netbooks.

Ethan- My favourite thing to read is my football comics! Sometimes I look at the football scores in the newspaper.

Chloe- My favourite books to read are books that teach you all about the world. My favourite one is about China. These are non-fiction.

Primary 2, School News, Wider Achievement

P2 busy back at school!

Primary 2 have had a very busy first week back!

Jacob- We were looking at the sound ‘qu’ and going over all of the sounds we already know.

Jessica-Lily- We wrote a ‘Recount’ of the Easter story. Jesus has now risen from the dead!

Ethan- A recount is when you are retelling a story you already know.

Wiktoria- In literacy, we were text explorers and we did a new activity called ‘Blankety Blank!’

Sophie- We have been giving people directions in maths this week! You tell them which places to go by using lots of different words.

Rory- Like forwards, backwards, left, right, clockwise and anti-clockwise.

Joshua- We did the ‘cha cha slide!’ because it gives you lots of different directions and movements to go in!

Lena- We also learned about symmetry. Asymmetric means the shape is different on both sides and symmetrical means its the same on both sides. We used mirrors on our symmetry hunt.

Leylan- We learned how to wash our hands properly for health and wellbeing. You always have to use soap and water and you don’t rush, you take your  time!

Maisie- Mrs Alexander sprayed us with a water bottle to show us how far germs travel when we don’t cover our mouths. Everyone thought it was really funny because we got soaked!

Logan M- Rory had talcum powder on his hands and we pretended that it was germs. He spread the ‘germs’ to other people and around the classroom and the talc went everywhere!

Jack- This shows us how far germs can go if you don’t wash your hands and cover your mouth when coughing and sneezing.

Primary 2, School News

P2 have been busy!

Sadie- We had a craft afternoon yesterday and we made something special which we are keeping a secret until Sunday.

Chloe- We had visitors from a school in Stirling who came to see our Rekenrek lesson. We did really well and the visitors were impressed!

Tinashe- We were using prediction in literacy. The book was called ‘The Storm’ and we had to predict what happened in the story.

Lena P- Our topic is called Forces and this week we did the ‘Car and Ramp’ experiment.

Joshua- We found out that building a big structure for a ramp, making it higher, made the car go faster and further.

Jacob- Friction stopped our car on the big ramp because it bumped into the carpet.

Orla- We have been working on subtraction and addition together.

Daniel- 18+2=20, 2+18=20         Sara 20-2=18, 20-18=2

Ethan- We have been learning all about the Stations of the Cross. There are 14.

Primary 2, School News

P2 Weekly Round up!

We have had a fantastic week in Primary 2. Here are our highlights:

Rebecca- I liked learning about tally marks! We made a tally chart of P2’s favourite pets.

We also started to use tally marks to record our group points. We are enjoying our ‘information handling’ maths focus.

Daniel- We learnt a new skill in literacy. It’s called note taking! A note is writing something short, we used bullet points. You don’t write a big long sentence.

Jacob- We were learning the sound ‘ph‘. Like elephants, dolphin, phone, phonics and alphabet. This is a quiet, lip sound.

Sophie- We starting singing songs to get ready for our assembly.

Our assembly is on the 1st of March at 11.15am. All P2 parents are very welcome! 

Sadie- Mrs Thompson, our dinner lady, came in to talk to us about what children ate for school dinners before we were born. She has been cooking school dinners for 27 years!

Sara- My dad came in. He spoke to us about when he was little and what it was like in school for him!

Joshua- He liked the team Hearts when he was a boy.

Lena- In Mr Sanderson’s school, f you were very healthy and always took the green tray, you got to win a prize! Like going bowling.

We have had a busy week learning lots of new things in primary 2.

 

‘We have learned all about Rabbie Burns. He was born in Alloway’ – Mara

‘We designed kilts for Robert Burns’ – Chloe

We have learned new Scot word, aye means yes, fitbaw means football and Auld Reekie is Edinburgh’– Joshua

‘I have learned that the long hand on a clock is the minute hand and the short hand is the hour hand.’- Lena S

‘We talked about our emotions and feelings. We have made a calm spot in the classrooms.’ – Jay

‘We were playing hopscotch, clapping games, knots and crosses and kick the can. People have been playing these games for a long time and that is what our topic is’– Olivia and Lena P

‘We have been learning ou/ ow words this week’ – Finn

‘We listen to Address tae a Haggis and To a Mouse. These are poems written by Robert Burns.’- Sophie

P2 have a new topic!

P2 are very excited to share their new topic with you. We are going to learn about ‘Schools Past and Present’. We worked on our plan together. We are going to learn about what it was like being a pupil in the past compared to being a pupil today. This includes subjects taught, games played, transport to school, school lunches, tools used in school and pupil voice.

We need help from our mums, dads, grans and grandads! Could you please send in a photograph of when you were in primary school? (Whether or not you were a St. Nicholas pupil!)

We are also looking for any parents who would like to come into school and talk to us about what it was like! The children will have lots of questions for you. If you can, please let us know.

We had lots of fun this week looking at old photographs of our school and of previous teachers and pupils.

Busy week back at school!

Primary 2 would like to share some of the things they have been doing and learning since Monday.

Olivia- We have been using our Rekenreks to switch numbers! A switch is when you change the order of the numbers in your sum.

Nina- We have made shadow pictures for art.

Daniel- We have been writing Winter Senses poems.

Rory- We read a book and wrote about the main thing that happened. Wilf and dad went to the ice rink.

Elias- We read ‘No Tricks Gran!’ and the main thing that happened was Gran made a ghost outside to scare the children.

We are really looking forward to telling you all about our new topic very soon.

Dentist visit!

We were so lucky to have a visit from a real dentist today- Louise’s mummy! We had a fantastic time learning how to take care of our teeth. Margarita even let us have a go at looking into Dinosaur Colin’s mouth with a special mirror.

We learned that it is important to brush your top teeth downwards,your bottom teeth upwards and your back teeth in little circles. We also sorted the food into ‘happy teeth’ and ‘sad teeth’ baskets. We learned that sweets, lollipops, fruitshoots and cakes are very tasty but they should be eaten as a little treat and not everyday.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Louise’s mummy for coming into our classroom and for giving us all a fantastic goody bag!

P6 request- raffle items

Hi there,

Primary 6 will be staging their performance of the musical “Oliver!” on the afternoon of Monday 19th June and the evening of Tuesday 20th June. Tickets will be offered to parents of classes other than Primary 6 next Tuesday. We are hoping to raise some money for school funds.

We would like to draw a raffle after our Oliver Twist Show on Tuesday 20th June. We will have a children’s hamper filled with sweets/chocolates and an adults’ hamper filled with pamper items, food items, wine, etc.

We would be grateful for any donations of these items. Please give these to your child so they can hand them to the P6 teachers. If you would like to donate any bottles, please hand these in in person to the school office (marked for P6 raffle).

“Stickman Production”

Primary 6a worked really hard to produce their “Stickman” puppet show to perform to the younger classes during book week. Every child had a part to play in this show whether it was narration, puppet mastery, lights or ICT. Primaries 1, 2 and 3 thoroughly enjoyed the show. Excellent work Primary 6, a great example of creative, independent work!

Primary 6b will be completing and performing their performance very soon. We are very excited to see it!

JRSO Update by Grace and Hana

On Wednesday we went to Broxburn and we took a survey of different vehicles we saw around us. Most people drove cars around and only two people were on their bikes. Now we are going to talk about how many different vehicles we saw. We saw over 100 cars and only 9 lorries, 6 buses, 20 vans, 7 motercycles, 2 bicycles, 1 emergency vehicles, 5 taxis and no farm vehicles. We are going to study our results and think of ways to minimise traffic around our school and make sure the public are slowing down near schools.

We have seen people wearing headphones while crossing the road twice! At Broxburn Primary school they have double yellow lines, which is good. We also seen a slowdown sign made by children at the entry of JHM dance!

Hello, the JRSO’s have been on a traffic survey around Broxburn and we tally marked every Car, Lorrie, Bus, Van, Motorcycle, Bicycle, Emergency Vehicle, Farm Vehicles and Other .We calculated the traffic. We would also thank everyone for not parking on the yellow zig zag lines. Here the traffic results. We are going to be studying these and finding ways of minimising traffic around our school.

We would like to say a huge CONGRATULATIONS to all the pupils of St.Nicholas! I am sure you will agree they were absolutely fantastic and put on an amazing concert.

Saoirse- “We were effective contributors because everyone joined in, sang out loud and were so happy to be performing for our community”.

Rosie- “We were successful learners because we worked so hard and we didn’t give up! We also learned so much about the 4 decades of our school!”

Fraser- “We were confident individuals because we were showing our talents and if we made a mistake, we continued to perform really well!”

Grace- “We were responsible citizens because we had the responsibility to learn different pieces of music really well, we had to help others, remember our parts and get ourselves organised!”

We would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to every single person who helped to make our concert so successful.

Our highlights:

  • The face paints and the songs! And the whole thing because I really liked other classes’ songs and costumes.   – Blake
  • I liked the P7’s Bring it all back to you because it was really loud and I liked the slideshow. Also, the P7 narrators were excellent and P7 really organised the whole thing!        -Alex
  • Being able to dress up as people from different decades and I thought it was really nice that some of the girls did highland dancing.  – Abbie
  • Everyone got to participate even though they might have been a wee bit shy, they still did really well!              -Natasha
  • I liked it when the parents started clapping, I think they really enjoyed it!                                                                -Karolina
  • The primary 1 and 2 children did so well especially since they are so little! The signing was really amazing.   -Shaelyn

Junior Road Safety Officer (JRSO) Blogpost

Hello, We are the Junior Road Safety Officers !!!  (JRSO).

We protect St. Nicholas children from not getting hurt from any kind of vehicles. We also hold completions.

We went to a meeting at Broxburn Primary school.

We got taught how to plan for assemblies. After that we learned how to not have nerves on the day of the assembly and also got sneaky tips.

We got a JRSO Safety book, Badge and a goodie bag to go with the job. The goodie bag contains a torch, Bookmark, Pencil, Pen and reflectors for crossing the road So vehicles can see you.

We have a Notice board at the school main entrance. It will also contain Posters, completions and news. The winner of the completions will be displayed on the board.

Hello we are here to say that we enjoyed ourselves at the JRSO(junior road safety officers) magic show and presentation.

We learnt the four special magic words which are STOP LOOK LISTEN and most special before you do anything THINK!

There was policemen all around some from Aberdeen,Broxburn and Linlithgow it was awesome!

Then the magic started a girl called Lois went up on the stage and there was a gray copy of stop look listen think and then she had to say the magic words then they turned colourful!

We will let you into a secret you only have to glue to big envelopes together and put a grey one in one and a colourful one in the other and secretly change the side.

Then Grace had to be a mind reader and choose one number out of 6 people and she got it right at the end all of them took there paper out of there envelope and the other 5 people had things that you should not do

and the one that I chose had the magic words on it!

At the end we got a goodie bag with all sorts of things in it and we also got a notebook as well .

**We have been having ICT problems but we seem to have resolved these issues!***

Last week our number talks strategy was place value and negative numbers. This strategy involved us breaking the numbers down, to subtract them. We didn’t find this strategy the most efficient because it involved many steps. We preferred using the number line strategy and the friendly number strategy to help us with subtraction problems!

We also made adverts for the tuck shop! We are now going to be responsible for the profit and loss made in the tuck shop this year. We looked at persuasive language and we realised how effective this could be in encouraging our pupils to buy the less popular items such as yogurt and kiwi!!

Hint 2: There are three of these over the Forth, one built in the 19th century, one built in the 20th century and one built in the 21st century….

Maths 

Last week we learned about BODMAS (Brackets Order Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction). It was important to do our problems in this order because otherwise we could all have different answers! In Number Talks this week our strategy was ‘Adding up in chunks’. When we break down our calculations, it makes it easier to solve difficult problems.

This week we also did rounding to the nearest ten, hundred and  thousand. We also challenged ourselves by rounding to the nearest ten thousand and hundred thousand. Furthermore, we took a look at decimals. This was tricky and it is something we will work on again in our next maths focus, which is money.

Language and literacy

In language and literacy we revised similes and metaphors. We also learnt about personification which is when you describe an object or thing with human characteristics. For example:

The wind whistled through the valley.

The trees whispered secrets.

Last week, we learned all about synonym and antonyms.

PSD

In PSD, we have been learning about gender inequality and we have made posters of what people think girls should like and another one that they think boys should like. We also wrote a traditional fairytale but we changed the gender! We are learning to respect each other and not to show discrimination.

Assembly

We have  recently been learning about the Victorians so we are doing an assembly to show you what we have been learning and we found out that we are doing a local show and it’s Oliver Twist!

Rudey reads the Nativity Story

Today, Primaries 2 and 2/1 had another surprise. They came into their classroom to discover Rudey reading the Nativity Story to the teddy bears and dolls!

He left us a letter asking us to teach him more about this story.

Zach- It was a little bit like when the teacher reads the story and we have milk.

Cerys- I want to teach Rudey that Christmas isn’t about getting presents, it is about Jesus’ birthday.

Connor G- Rudey needs to be taught that Christmas isn’t just about Santa, it is about the day Jesus was born in a barn!

The children are going to learn as much as they can about the Nativity story and teach Rudey the true meaning of Chrismas.

Double Trouble!

On Thursday, Primaries 2 and 2/1 made snowflakes, snowmen and robins to cheer Rudey up. He was very pleased and rewarded us with 10 minutes extra Golden Time!

Today we were shocked to find both Rudeys had been up to mischief! Mrs Dymock’s Rudey was holding a letter and Mrs Gibson’s Rudey was lying in the snow!

Primaries 2 and 2/1 get a special visitor!

Primaries 2 and 2/1 had a very special visitor from the North Pole! He is called Rudey and he is one of Santa’s elves. Santa wrote us a letter explaining that Rudey needs help. He is a very naughty elf and he needs to learn some good behaviour from the boys and girls.

On the 1st of December, Rudey left a terrible mess in our classrooms! We had to teach Rudey how to tidy up properly. We also made our own paper elves and painted a huge elf for our classroom doors.

On the 2nd of December, Rudey was very nice. He left us scissors, paper and glitter. He has written a letter thanking us for making him feel welcome and has rewarded us with craft materials to make snowflakes!

Justin- He is very cheeky!

Ciaran- He is magic.

Daniel- He is naughty.

Matthew M- He is kind and a little naughty sometimes.

Connor- I felt excited.

Anna- He is not tidying up properly.

Neve W- I was shocked!

Super 3D shape challenge!

Primary 2/1 have been working very hard at home. We have made some super 3D models using lots of 3D shapes. To make these models we used:

tins

paper

cardboard

tubes

pens

paints

tin foil

Have a look at our pictures and see if you can spot any cuboids, spheres, cubes, cylinders, cones or pyramids.

1970’s Groovy Disco!

Today Primaries 2 and 2/1 had a 1970’s disco to mark the end of their topic! Even Mrs Brown joined in with our disco and showed us her moves. We were all dressed up and we looked FANTASTIC! 

Lucas- We used lots of different dancemoves from the 1970s.

Emily- We played the corners game with a disco ball, flares, platforms and a record.

Adam- We played 1970s musical statues.

Ciaran- We did interesting dance moves from the 1970s!

Connor C- We had party snacks and juice.

We would like to share everything we have learned about the 1970s:

Matthew- We learnt that the first video game ever invented was called Pong.

Justin- People wore platforms and flares.

Harry- The names of the ABBA members are Bjorn, Benny, Anni-Frid and Agnetha.

Zac- We know that Camberwick Green and The Wombles are 1970s children’s T.V programmes.

Neve W- We learnt the dance from Saturday Night Fever.

Kaylan- John Travolta is the star!

Aoibhe- You can change the record player to different speeds. You can set it very fast and the voices sound funny and squeaky. When you set it very slow, the voices slow time and it takes a long time for the record to finish.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Hesketh. She brought in lots of different things from the 1970s including a record player, 1970s toys, Camberwick Green discs, lots of records, a disco ball and books from the 1970s.

We also want to thank all the mums, dads, grannies and grandads for helping us look super for our disco and for handing in 1970s memorabilia.

International Languages Day 2015

Primaries 2 and 2/1 had a fantastic day on Friday. We celebrated International Languages Day, with a focus on Spanish, as we are learning this language in our school. We were lucky enough to have a visit from P5b, who taught us the ‘Hokey Cokey’ in Spanish! Primary 2 sang their Spanish number song to the nursery boys and girls and Primary 2/1 sang their number song to Primary 5b. We were FANTASTICO! 🙂

Meanwhile, the super Primary 1 boys and girls were taking part in their Macmillan coffee morning. A huge well done to boys, girls, mums and dads for raising money for this great cause.

Groovy Grandparents- Learning about life in the 1970s

Primaries 2 and 2/1 were very lucky today! Mrs Hesketh was born in 1970. She brought in a record player and all her favourite records from when she was a little girl. We learned lots of new facts about our topic.

Mirin- You have to hold the records really carefully or they will get scratched. If they get scratched, they jump all over the place and we can’t hear them properly.

Aoibhe- We learned that it’s not just music. We can listen to stories too. Mrs Hesketh brought in the Peter Pan story for us to listen to.

Matthew, Christy- We listened to the Carpenters.

Adam- When Mrs Hesketh set the record player to 78, it was really funny. The voices were very fast and squeaky.

Cerys and Mrs Hesketh both brought in a disco ball! We decided to put out the lights, switched these on and dance to the records. We tried to dance like they did in the 1970s, with lots of special moves!

The Anaconda’s Feast in Primary 2 and 2/1

Last week, Primaries 2 and 1 met a very sneaky snake! It was an Anaconda snake and we learnt some very interesting facts about this snake.

Christy- They live in South America.

Lucas- I reminded Mrs Dymock that the Anaconda swallows its feast whole.

Bella-Rose- It can grow as long as a school bus!

Harry- I’ve held an Anaconda round my neck when I was on holiday in Spain.

We decided to create our own Anacondas! We used different materials including coloured paper, cardboard, crayons, pencils, glue, glitter and scissors.

We have displayed our artwork on our classroom doors, ENTER IF YOU DARE!

Taking care of our plants

Primary 1 have been learning about living things and how to take care of them. Our ‘beanstalks’ were looking quite squashed in their small pots, their roots definitely needed more space. We decided to replant them into bigger pots before we take them home next week. Halfway through replanting, we ran out of soil! This was a great opportunity to get out in the sunshine and collect some more.
