Primary 1 23.11.20

Good morning
Primary 1 have been very busy the past few weeks. We have begun a new interdisciplinary topic learning all about toys. We started this topic with a virtual visit from the museum services. Maureen called us on the class laptop and spoke about some of the toys children played with in the olden days. The children were able to investigate the different materials toys used to be made from and saw the differences between toys now-a-days and toys in the past. This week we have turned our role play areas into toy shops. The children are enjoying creating toys to place on the shelves and are learning to use money in the cashiers area. We are using this topic to explore forces and have been learning about toys we push and toys we pull.
In phonics we have been learning the sounds g, l, f and o. This week we will be learning about b and u. Thank you for all the work you have been doing at home to practise writing these letters and thinking of words containing each sound.
In maths we have finished our work on addition and are now learning to subtract. We will be using lots of concrete materials to support learning in this.
Homework from now on will look a little different. We are going to be using Seesaw to post a variety of activities each week. Seesaw is a fantastic resource which allows your child to complete activities on a tablet or phone and send them back to us. Your child will come home today with a sheet explaining how to access their personal Seesaw account. Please let us know if you need any help with this. Reading books will continue to be given out weekly and should be brought to school every day to be read in class. Thank you for your continued support Miss Daun and Miss Christy

This week Primary 1 have been learning 2 new sounds: g and l. The children are becoming very good at thinking of words starting with these letters and are building confidence both reading and writing short words containing the sounds we have learnt so far. Thank you for all your help at home with this, the children are making great progress! We are also focusing this week on the common words go, got and get. Please practise these words with your children and try to think of some sentences with these words in them.
In maths we are working on addition. The children are beginning to move on from adding pictures of objects to using the written sums.
We are starting our new interdisciplinary topic on toys this week. The children spoke about what they already know about toys yesterday and we will use this knowledge to inform the learning throughout the term. Tomorrow we will be creating a toy shop in each of our classrooms.
Next week we will be giving some children lines to learn for our upcoming nativity. We will also be learning some new songs in class for this. It is getting very exciting!
Thank you for all your continued support

Primary 1 are now well into their toys topic. We have a toy shop up and running in the classroom and this week we will be learning about the different forces which make toys work. This term’s big homework task was given out last week. Your child is to create a model toy for our toy shop from recycled materials. This toy is due on Monday the 27th November.
We are also busy practising our nativity. We have now learnt all the songs and are busy practising the actions to accompany them. We have also started rehearsing lines and dancing with some of the children. If your child has words to learn please practise them at home. We are encouraging the children to speak loudly and slowly when they deliver their line.
There are some exciting dates for your diary coming up in the next few weeks…
This Friday is Children in Need. Your child can come to school dressed in their pyjamas. Badges, wrist bands and colouring sheets are on sale throughout this week. Please see the email sent out on Friday for details of prices or speak to us.
On Thursday 23rd November there is a ‘read, write, count’ evening from 6.30-7.30. Invitations were sent to all parents/ carers yesterday.
On Wednesday 29th November we will be having a day focused on reading books. Children are encouraged to come to school dressed as a character from a book.
Thank you for your support

Primary 1 30/10/17

Welcome back after the October holiday. We hope you all had a lovely break. This term our interdisciplinary topic will be ‘toys’. The children enjoyed bringing in their favourite toy last week and were all able to talk about it in front of the class and write about what they like to play with their toy in our writing lesson. This week we will be setting up our toy shop in the classroom role play area. So far we have made unicorns and this week we will make some teddy bears. This topic will teach the children about money, materials and forces.
In maths we are learning to add 2 sets of objects together. The children have made lots of progress recognising numbers and counting out sets which is aiding them as they move onto addition strategies.
We have also started learning the nativity songs in class this week. We will be practising these songs regularly in class and will give out speaking parts in the next week or so.
Reminders:
PE is on a Monday. Please ensure your child comes prepared with a PE kit.
Homework folders should be returned to school every day so that we can read with your child throughout the week and write in homework diaries when necessary.
