Woweee! The Solar Eclipse Sure Came To Bankton!

What an exciting morning we had across the school. After learning the science behind the solar eclipse and fully understanding the risks involved P3, P3/4, P4, P5, P5/6, P6, P6/7 and P7 all gathered together with their pinhole viewer at the ready!

To begin with the clouds spoiled our view, but as if by magic, as the eclipse happened, the clouds cleared a small patch, almost especially for us in the Bankton team!

We certainly won’t forget where we were on 20th March 2015! The next eclipse isn’t for around another 19 years!

Rehearsals are in full flow!

Rehearsals for our school show ‘Olivia’ are in full flow! Today it was great to see everything beginning to come together. Well done to all the characters with speaking parts who are furiously trying to learn their lines. We’ll keep you updated on how we’re doing over the next couple of weeks.

One thing’s for sure… keep the evenings of Tuesday 31st March and Wednesday 1st April free – you won’t want to miss it!!!

A Fun Week

Last week we did sports day and fun day.  It was exciting.  Sports day was brilliant, the races were amazing and tiring.  It was funny watching the teachers, mums, dads and little kids race.  Scott enjoyed the skipping races, Stewart enjoyed the football dribble because he was good at it.  On Thursday we had our fun day.  The super soaker assault course got us super wet, Mrs Sutherland and Miss Henderson had lots of fun!  Kai enjoyed getting soaked by the teachers on the assault course.  “It was fun when the teachers were having fun with us,” Kai.  “Watching the movie was great because it had lots of funny bits in it,” Katie.  This week we are all looking forward to taking part in the show, The Pirates of the Curry Bean, we hope to see you there!

Science

This week we enjoyed a visit form Mr Bethune, a science teacher from JYHS. He taught us about light and reflection.  We got to take part in a couple of experiments.  The first one was shining a light onto a mirror and tracing the reflection to see where it went.  The second one was using convex and concave lenses, we shone a light through each lens and traced what happened to it. Here are diagrams showing what we learned.

This is what the class thought:

Cassie – I enjoyed it because I learned something new about convex and concave lenses.

Ewan – I thought it was cool when Mr Bethune was reflecting the laser pointer on to the smartboard using a mirror.

Alexander – I liked it when Mr Bethune put coloured filters in front of the projector. It made the colours on the screen look different.

Rebecca – I enjoyed Mr Bethune’s visit because we learned about ray boxes.

Health and Eco Week

Last week we did street dance, hand ball, gymnastics plus fencing.  The reason we did all of these activities is that it was Health Week.  We created health diaries to show us how much healthy food we eat, how much exercise we get and long we sleep.  Next week we are going to bring our diaries in to show the class.  The most popular activity was fencing.  Lewis thought it was exciting getting to fight using the swords.  Alexander thought it was great fun because he hadn’t tried it before.

As well as learning about health we did some Eco activities.  It was fun to make paper from scratch.  Robbie enjoyed making the paper because it was messy!  Aaron enjoyed making the paper because the pulp looked horrible and he liked putting his hands in it!  Amber loved the paper making activity because she also likes to get very messy!

P5’s Spectacular Day Out

P5swent to Edinburgh to visit Holyrood Palace and The National Museum of Scotland.  We all enjoyed the day.  When we arrived we spotted bullet marks on the old tower, they might be there because the English tried to kidnap Mary Stewart, Queen of Scots from the Palace.  Holyrood Palace is very fancy, the Great Staircase is outstandingly regal.  We also saw a 500 year old crime scene.  In the corner of Mary’s bed chamber we observed the secret staircase that Lord Darnley used in the murder of Riccio.  In the next room and on the staircase we discovered the blood stains from the murder, some people think it is fake!!!  A short time later we entered the dining room which contained about 3000 pieces of silver.  In the gallery, on the pictures, we saw evidence of sword damage to the pictures.  The slash marks were cause by English soldiers who were angry that they did not beat Scotland in a battle.  By P5B.

After Holyrood Palace we went to the museum.  Here is what the children enjoyed.

“I enjoyed looking at the technical section of the museum.”  Jamie.

“I liked putting all of the Tudor clothes on!”  Robbie.

“I enjoyed looking for the information to answer the questions in my workbook, at the museum.”  Rachel.

“I enjoyed looking at the animals, my favourite was the tiger!”  Emma K.

“I liked visiting the space area.  My favourite thing was the meteor.”  Kai.

“At the animal section there was an activity to find out which animal we weighed the same as, I was the Boa Constrictor.”  Alexander.

“I liked looking at the old coins from the time of Mary Queen of Scots.”  Lewis.

World Book Day

World Book Day

Thursday was World Book Day and we all dressed up as our favourite book characters.  We enjoyed pretending to be the characters and it was fun to see who everyone else dressed up as.  We enjoyed seeing all of the costumes and hearing about books we didn’t know.  Can you guess the characters in the picture?

We have been enjoying learning about Mary Queen of Scots and have been designing Tudor style outfits to attend the marriage of Mary Queen of Scots to Lord Darnley. Kai enjoyed writing his story and Miss Henderson is looking forward to reading everyone’s stories. Emma enjoyed writing in German about her family. We have been writing diary entries for Mary Queen of Scots and Eilidh enjoyed using teabags to stain the paper. We welcome Sean back to Bankton.

P5a Update

P5 are enjoying learning about Mary Queen of Scots and we have been writing about what we would do if we were King or Queen. Carrie suggested she would ban cars and have horses and carriages instead. Steven would like to increase the age for playing certain computer games. We have designed our own emblems uniting Scotland and France.
We love learning about electricity and are enjoying making our own circuits.
We have also looked at different creation stories and have mixed ideas about which one is true.
