P2/3 Happy Holidays!!!

In Maths we have been learning the Months of the Year. We really enjoy singing along to this song to help us remember the months of the year.

We read Katie Morag Delivers the Mail and Kayla brought in her dad’s mailbag to show the class. Some of the class thought it was made of soft leather and some others thought it made of plastic because it felt rough.

You have all worked very hard this term and I hope you have a restful October break. Mrs Sinclair

Holiday Week

This week P3 continued working on numbers to 100. Some groups have been adding numbers over 100!

Yesterday we enjoyed make shoreline pictures using tissue paper to great effect.

We are nearly at the end of our Katie Morag topic and this week we put speech from a story into speech bubbles and we also read Katie Morag and the Tiresome Ted. We shared things that make us angry and frustrated and spoke about ways of calming ourselves down.

Through our writing we were reminded of our adventure to Inchcolm Island last week.

We are all looking forward to our holidays next week.

P2/3’s weekly review

Some of our children have started writing very grown up reports on a subject they choose.  Mrs Horne is really looking forward to reading these when they are finished.  We have also started to look at the different ways animals can be sorted into groups.  We learned about fish, amphibians, mammals, reptiles, birds and insects.  We are really looking forward to our zoo visit where we will learn more about animals from these groups.  Some of the boys and girls have been learning that when two lines meet they form an angle.  They have had fun trying to find right angles all around us.  Miss Hao came in and helped us to remember the numbers 1- 10 in Mandarin and we even learnt a song in Mandarin.

Brooke, Laura, Darcy, Iain and Keigan had fun singing the song with Miss Hao, while Katie liked dancing to it.  Louise liked learning to count from 1- 10 in Chinese.

Zoe and Carlos enjoyed the activity to group animals.

Morgan and Erin had fun writing their reports.

We’re going to the zoo!

Primary 2/3 are very excited because on the 26th May, they are going to visit Edinburgh Zoo with Primary 2 to help them learn more about their topic, ‘Living and non-living things.’

For our topic, had to sort some pictures in to categories, but Mrs Horne didn’t tell us what these were.  After a while we worked out it was living and non-living things.  Then the next day we spent some time outside photographing examples of living and non-living things.

We have art work around the school to make the playground more interesting – these are non-living things.

Some children have been learning how to write a report and they are going to be writing their own report next week.

Last week we planted some seeds to grow for our class planters, and this week many of them have started to show tiny green shoots.  We have also worked some more on our planters and hope to have them ready to go on show soon.

We all think it is great to see Ms Barr starting back at Bankton and we had great fun in her lessons this week.

Primary 2/3 had fun with Science.

We tried some activities like – drawing circles on paper; taking a pencil from the pencil pot and putting it back; building a tower of five cubes, using the same colour; hopping and jumping and clapping.  These activities were all very easy but then we tried them again with our eyes tight shut.  Some of them suddenly became very tricky.

Brooke – building a tower of five cubes with your eyes shut was hard because you had to get the same colour.

Zoe – drawing the circle on the piece of paper with your eyes shut was difficult as you drew different shapes.

Darcy – taking the pencil out and putting it back was tricky with your eyes shut.

We discovered that for some activities we need our eyes and our hands to communicate with our brains to make them easy.  This is called hand-eye co-ordination.

What’s going on inside

This was a great activity, we had to draw round someone in our group, then we thought about what we know about our bodies, we looked closely at our bodies, we listened to our friends bodies to see if we could work out what parts are inside our bodies and draw them on the person on the paper.  We did really well, but we didn’t get everything correct.  Mrs Horne showed us pictures on the SMARTboard so we could see where the organs really were.

Shadows

We spent some time outside in the sunshine investigating our shadows; we checked they belonged to us by watching closely that they did everything we did.  We tried to make interesting shadow shapes and we also tried to jump on our friends’ shadow, but they had to stop us.  Finally we tried making ‘shadow monsters’ but the sun decided to go behind a cloud and spoiled our fun.

This week we have had a lot of fun activities too – the firs tone of these was on Wednesday.  We had a Judo taster session, we all had great fun.

Woweee! The Solar Eclipse Sure Came To Bankton!

What an exciting morning we had across the school. After learning the science behind the solar eclipse and fully understanding the risks involved P3, P3/4, P4, P5, P5/6, P6, P6/7 and P7 all gathered together with their pinhole viewer at the ready!

To begin with the clouds spoiled our view, but as if by magic, as the eclipse happened, the clouds cleared a small patch, almost especially for us in the Bankton team!

We certainly won’t forget where we were on 20th March 2015! The next eclipse isn’t for around another 19 years!

P.E.

Our teacher always put us through a fast pace warm up which means we are tired out before the main part of the lesson.  We were practising shooting into the basketball net and some of us managed to score a basket unfortunately Mrs Sinclair didn’t.

Our fun week! (or two) by P2/3

In Maths we have all been busy learning and practising working with numbers.  Some of us have been continuing with our 2, 5 and 10 times tables, whilst some others have developed this onto dividing too.  Still others were practising subtraction numbers stories for numbers to 20.

In Literacy, we have had some people learning all about verbs and how to make these past tense (like they have already happened).  Some verbs just need you to add –ed, for example whisper +ed = whispered.  Others which have an ‘e’ at the end need you to take off the ‘e’ before adding –ed, for example like becomes liked. There is still another way to make past tense verbs – this is more complicated, as you need to look at the letter before the last consonant.  If this letter is a vowel, which makes a short vowel sound then you need to double the end consonant and then add –ed.  Here are some of our examples –

Katie – hop becomes hopped, Darcy – bat becomes batted, Alex – jog becomes jogged, Kai – pat becomes patted.

Meanwhile other children were learning about words to show possession, for example –

Erin – their dance,  Zoe – her car, Brooke – my pencil, Keigan – his toy.

For our community topic we took a walk around some areas of Dedridge and we thought about what there is in the community to provide for our needs and wants.  Our needs are provided by – the health centre, the chemist, park for exercise, shops for food, houses for shelter.

Of course we needed to try out the park for providing for our need for exercise and our want for fun!

P3: Cody’s Patience Was Tested This Week!

p3 making roman armour 034The whole class were put into pairs to work together making their Roman Armour out of paper.  In order to do this they had to use lots of different skills such as problem solving, cutting, measuring and sticking as well listening and talking which is a challenge to such a ‘quiet’ class!!

Everyone produced super diary entries about ‘A Day in the Life of a Roman Slave’ especially Liam who nearly wore out his gym shoes as Mrs Sinclair kept sending him back  to up-level his diary entry.

Samantha liked doing the Roman Mosaic with Mrs Ferguson.  Mrs Sinclair looks forward to seeing these mosaics displayed around the school.

Paint Challenge

Can you paint from one side to the other using only two primary colours and white without repetition? I couldn’t!

The whole class enjoyed doing this challenge especially Isabel who worked very hard on her mixing skills to try and achieve this challenge. Please read this post next week to find out how she got on.

In maths we are learning our times tables.  Please spend a few minutes each day asking your child 2x & 3x table questions.

P2/3’s weekly review

In maths, some of us have been working on our addition and subtraction – including learning some other words which mean the same as add or subtract.  Meanwhile, some others have been learning times tables –  trying to learn to say our 2, 5, and 10 times tables.

Erin enjoyed the textbook exercise using her 10 times tables, while Carlos enjoyed learning more about his addition and subtraction, particularly the vocabulary used for add and subtract.

In Literacy, the Primary 3s were looking more at adjectives and trying to use them to create good descriptions.   Some of us have written stories about an alien.  We have also been thinking about our needs, what do we need to survive.

We also spent some time thinking about Miss Barr and we enjoyed making cards to send to her at this time, because we miss her so much and are hoping she makes it back to Bankton soon!

Learning Fact for Mrs Stewart:-

  • ‘subtract’ and ‘find the difference’ are both ways to say take away,
  • ‘total’ and ‘altogether’ are words used to tell you to add
