P2/3’s weekly review

Some of our children have started writing very grown up reports on a subject they choose.  Mrs Horne is really looking forward to reading these when they are finished.  We have also started to look at the different ways animals can be sorted into groups.  We learned about fish, amphibians, mammals, reptiles, birds and insects.  We are really looking forward to our zoo visit where we will learn more about animals from these groups.  Some of the boys and girls have been learning that when two lines meet they form an angle.  They have had fun trying to find right angles all around us.  Miss Hao came in and helped us to remember the numbers 1- 10 in Mandarin and we even learnt a song in Mandarin.

Brooke, Laura, Darcy, Iain and Keigan had fun singing the song with Miss Hao, while Katie liked dancing to it.  Louise liked learning to count from 1- 10 in Chinese.

Zoe and Carlos enjoyed the activity to group animals.

Morgan and Erin had fun writing their reports.

Animals, Animals, Animals !!!

P2 have been busy preparing for our trip to the zoo !!!

We are so excited !!!

P2 have been working on identifing different animal groups e.g. mammals, fish etc

We sorted lots of different pictures of animals and talked about how they were different!

Then, we did some research into these different animal groups. We took notes about the key features of animals from these groups.

Have a look at what we have been doing this week … . . . .

We’re going to the zoo!

Primary 2/3 are very excited because on the 26th May, they are going to visit Edinburgh Zoo with Primary 2 to help them learn more about their topic, ‘Living and non-living things.’

For our topic, had to sort some pictures in to categories, but Mrs Horne didn’t tell us what these were.  After a while we worked out it was living and non-living things.  Then the next day we spent some time outside photographing examples of living and non-living things.

The planter boxes have flowers in them – these are living things.

We have art work around the school to make the playground more interesting – these are non-living things.

Some children have been learning how to write a report and they are going to be writing their own report next week.

Last week we planted some seeds to grow for our class planters, and this week many of them have started to show tiny green shoots.  We have also worked some more on our planters and hope to have them ready to go on show soon.

We all think it is great to see Ms Barr starting back at Bankton and we had great fun in her lessons this week.

Primary 2/3 had fun with Science.

We tried some activities like – drawing circles on paper; taking a pencil from the pencil pot and putting it back; building a tower of five cubes, using the same colour; hopping and jumping and clapping.  These activities were all very easy but then we tried them again with our eyes tight shut.  Some of them suddenly became very tricky.

Brooke – building a tower of five cubes with your eyes shut was hard because you had to get the same colour.

Zoe – drawing the circle on the piece of paper with your eyes shut was difficult as you drew different shapes.

Darcy – taking the pencil out and putting it back was tricky with your eyes shut.

We discovered that for some activities we need our eyes and our hands to communicate with our brains to make them easy.  This is called hand-eye co-ordination.

What’s going on inside

This was a great activity, we had to draw round someone in our group, then we thought about what we know about our bodies, we looked closely at our bodies, we listened to our friends bodies to see if we could work out what parts are inside our bodies and draw them on the person on the paper.  We did really well, but we didn’t get everything correct.  Mrs Horne showed us pictures on the SMARTboard so we could see where the organs really were.

Shadows

We spent some time outside in the sunshine investigating our shadows; we checked they belonged to us by watching closely that they did everything we did.  We tried to make interesting shadow shapes and we also tried to jump on our friends’ shadow, but they had to stop us.  Finally we tried making ‘shadow monsters’ but the sun decided to go behind a cloud and spoiled our fun.

P2 and P2/3 have been responsible citizens by collecting food for the West Lothian food bank!

Marshall from the The Trussel Trust came to collect our food. He said we had collected enough for 33 days !!!

We are feeling very proud as we know that we can help others in West Lothian!!

Well done P2 and P2/3

Exciting experiments in P1/2

This week in P1/2 we have been predicting and experimenting with fruit.  We started with thinking about what fruits might sink or float and gave reasons for our answers.  Next we looked at all of the different fruit we were going to use and made predictions about whether they would float or sink.  Then came the exciting part!   We tried putting them all in the water to see what would happen.  We were particularly surprised to see that grapes didn’t float!

Ryan was our star of the week as he even took time at home to experiment with some of the fruit and brought them in for us to try too (we hadn’t thought about trying a plum!).  Jamie also enjoyed our experiment.

Niamh has enjoyed our reading work this week, particularly completing her comprehension work.  James and Andrew have enjoyed our handwriting this week (P1 were revising the differences between b and d and P2 were continuing practising the common words).

Arran has enjoyed revisiting addition and subtraction in maths this week.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend.

Lava Lamps!!!

P2 have been doing lots of science this week!

We made our own Lava Lamps!!

They looked amazing.

We made them by adding vegetable oil and water to a empty bottle, then we added a few drops of food colouring. Finally we added a fizzing tablet and by magic the gas created bubbles which rose to the surface !!!

Its so easy, you can even do it at home!!

Did you spot something special going on in the sky this morning?

P2 went out with special poin hole viewers to see if they could catch a glimpse of the eclipse.

We went very lucky to see it as the clouds decided to clear for a few minutes. Then we went in a watched it on the computer.IMG_2551 IMG_2552 IMG_2553 IMG_2554

Caiden thought it was amazing!

Charles said ‘the sun looked like it went dark’

Emma S said ‘It was amazing

P2 have also been busy making their model lorrys for our technology project!

We worked together really well to come up with a design and were excellent when it came to building time!
