Mathematicians and Scientists in P1/2!

This week P1/2 have enjoyed revising their number stories of 6 and 7.  The boys and girls have been practising working independently and have been impressing Mrs Lloyd!

We also planned out a science experiment to explore seeds being grown in different conditions.  We planted five seeds and predicted which seeds will grow and which ones wont.  We have some of the seeds in the dark in the cupboard and some of the seeds are on the window ledge – some will be watered and some will not be watered.  We are going to keep an eye on these to see which of our predictions are correct.

Finally, thank you again to Chloe Snape’s gran who kindly gave up her time to come and read to some of the boys and girls in P1/2.  The children throughly enjoy hearing stories and learning new vocabulary from the stories and we really appreciate you coming in to work with us.

Wonderful World Book Day in P1/2

Another fun filled week in P1/2.  In maths this week we have been working on the number stories of 6 and 7 and have been using cubes and counters to help us to work out the missing numbers in sums.

We received a letter from Sir Helpalot who has asked us to build him a strong castle.  After discussion in the class, P1/2 came up with the idea of building castle models to help keep him safe.  He also left us a clue and after a while we managed to work out that he wanted us to read Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  We read the story and had lots of fun in the structured play area around the theme.

We had super fun on world book day and enjoyed dressing up as our favourite book characters as well as talking about why we like bedtime stories, voting on our favourite fairytale and reading books in the library.  We also had an extra special treat when P5/6 came down to read to us.  It was so much fun!

What’s the Time Mr Wolf?

P1/2 have been busy thinking about all the different Fairytales we know to help us plan a display in time for World Book Day.  We started work on some of the different parts of our display and had great fun making knights to guard the castle, designing our own gingerbread men, sketching the big bad wolf, making leaves for a beanstalk, making some of the different characters from the story and designing our own dragons.

While we were busy with our art work we were really lucky to have Olivia’s gran come in to read us stories in the library corner.  We enjoyed having you read to us and thank you very much for taking the time to come in and visit us.

In maths we have been learning to read o’clock times and to set the hands on a clock to show different o’clock times.  We even noticed some o’clock times on our classroom clock afterwards!

While we were learning about time, we were also revising our addition and missing number sums.  Lots of people are working really hard and producing good quality independent work.

Keep up the good work boys and girls.  I’m looking forward to seeing the finished fairytale display.

Measuring in Primary One

Primary One have been learning how to measure and they have been doing a brilliant job!!

We have been using different objects like cubes, paperclips and pennies to measure a variety of objects.

We have also enjoyed taking part in health week and thinking about why exercise is good for our bodies ! On Wednesday, we took part in gymnastics and on Thursday we learnt how to play handball! Handball was our favourite!

Well done P1!

Marvellous Measuring and Healthy Happenings in P1/2

This week in maths, P1/2 have been practising their measuring skills.  We have been estimating and measuring the size of different objects using dominoes, dice, paper clips and cubes.  We drew round our feet and estimated how many cubes long they were before we measured them.  We have also been ordering objects from smallest to tallest.  We are getting really good at it!

During health week we had fun in the hall playing games and improving our fitness.  We also enjoyed doing our daily mile with P1 and had the chance to be introduced to the sport of Handball.  It was really fun.

In literacy we worked in our groups to find bold and italic writing in a piece of text about Jack and the Beanstalk.  We all co-operated well together and took turns to share the highlighter to highlight the bold and italic writing.  We really impressed Mrs Lloyd.

We enjoyed some time in the structured play area this week and showed good sharing skills with our friends.  We enjoyed dressing up in the castle role-play area, building with lego, playing with the trains, getting creative in the art area, reading books in the library corner and making up our own puppet shows!

A short but busy week!  Well done boys and girls.  Keep up the good work!

Superheroes to the rescue…….

This week in maths, P1/2 have been working on addition within 5.  We have been practising using our fingers, cubes, number lines and even just our brains to add up within 5.  Miss Graham helped us practise our number stories to 5 with a game of skittles.  We rolled the bowling ball and looked at how many skittles were knocked over and how many were still standing to help us write some number stories.  We also tried screening numbers this week and looked at counting on from the biggest number rather than counting the 5 again that we already know we have e.g. 5 + 3 – we lock the number five in our heads and count on 5 –  6, 7, 8.

Last week we planted some magic beans to try to grow some beanstalks of our own.  We learned all about what plants need to survive and are checking to make sure our seeds have all these things so that they will grow!  Ask your child what plants need to survive.

As part of the ‘Day for Change’ we learned about the different food groups and sorted examples of foods from each group. We learned that carbohydrates give you energy, protein helps you grow strong, dairy products helps your bones and teeth stay healthy and strong and fruit and vegetables give you vitamins and minerals.  We also designed our own superheroes and thought about which super power we would like them to have in order for them to save the world.

Last week , Darren from the Lanthorn church came in to school to talk to us about perseverance.  He left lots of fun activities for us to have a go at to help us to practise perservering even when things get a bit tricky.  It was really fun and this week we recorded our favourite activity in our learning profiles.  Mrs Lloyd was very impressed with our detailed black line drawings.

P1/2 would like to say a big thank you to Nana Snape (Chloe’s gran) who came into school to read stories to the children.  The boys and girls thoroughly enjoyed listening to the stories and appreciate you taking time out to come and read to them.  They are looking forward to our other story reading volunteers who will be visiting over the coming weeks.

Finally, thanks to Darren and his team at the Lanthorn church for allowing us to come along for a visit and learn all about baptism.  The children enjoyed listening to a story before acting out what would happen at a baptism.  Darren also had a couple of friends there who showed us christening robes and shawls that are special to them and their families.  Thank you very much for having us.  The children enjoyed their visit and learned a lot.

Healthy Eating in Primary One

As part of the day for change activities, Primary One found out more about healthy eating and why we need to eat the right things. We made super healthy eating plates and designed our own superheros to help others.

In maths, we carried on working on our adding skills and have been talking about different adding strageties we knew e.g using a number line, counting on etc. We also started to learn about measuring different items using cubes !

On Thursday afternoon, we went for a walk to the Lanthorn Centre to visit Darren at the Church. We learnt all about what a Baptism is!

Have a lovely long weekend Primary One!!

Good Learners in P1/2

A big thank you to all the parents and families who were able to attend our I count PATPAL morning (Pupils as Teachers, Parents as Learners). P1/2 were delighted to have you there and enjoyed teaching you all about what we have been learning in maths.

During maths this week we have been practising identifying all the coins up to £1 and have been working on using money to buy different items and make different values.  We have been impressing Mrs Lloyd with our independent work and also with our pattern making!

In P.E. this week the boys and girls enjoyed gymnastics with Mr Muldoon.  Here are some action shots!  Mr Muldoon is very impressed with the gymnastic skills!

As part of our growth mindset work we have been discussing what makes a good learner.  Look at our great ideas!

In literacy this week we worked in groups to look for and highlight some different types of writing within a text.  The children worked very well together in groups and managed to find some different looking text which they later found out was called bold and italic writing.  We played a silly game to help us learn these words and are ready to look out for bold and italic text in our reading and library books.

Finally, after reading Jack and the Beanstalk, the boys and girls came up with the idea of growing their own beanstalks.  Here are some photos of them planting the seeds – we can’t wait to see if they grow!

Well done boys and girls and please help me to remember to water the seeds next week!

Number Story Naturals in P1/2!!

This week, P1/2 have been showing off their addition skills! The boys and girls have been working hard finding all the different number stories of 4 and 5.  We have used lots of different strategies to help us do this like using our fingers, cubes and magnets!  We have spotted a pattern with the number stories!  Can you spot it too?  There are 3 number stories of 2, 4 number stories of 3, 5 number stories of 4 and 6 number stories of 5!  We have also been practising our money skills and have been using different coins to pay for items.  Lots of fantastic independent work has been carried out this week and Mrs Lloyd is very proud of everyone!

Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend our bitesize reading sessions this week.  It was great to have you there and the children really enjoyed showing off their skills!

Well done to all the boys and girls who stood up in front of the class and managed to say their Scottish poem this week.  Mrs Lloyd had trouble narrowing it down to four finalists – well done to Chloe, Brooklyn, Olivia and Tobi.  It was a hard decision choosing the final two people who stood up in front of the whole school at assembly to recite their poems – well done to Olivia and Tobi – you represented P1/2 really well and made us all proud.

On Thursday, we listened to the story called ‘The Disgusting Sandwich’ and used this to help us make some disgusted faces in our art work.

Finally, Mr Wedlock and Mr Evans made an appearance during maths this week when they decided to have their own number talk during independent maths work time.  Great job boys!

Marvellous Maths in Primary One

This week, Primary One have been impressing Miss Rodford with their adding skills! We have been working hard finding different ways to make 4 and 5.  We have been using our fingers, cubes and singing number stories songs!

Did you know that there are 6 ways to make 5?

We have also been working using different coins to pay for items.

Well done to Hannah and Jamie Wilkie who were very brave a stood up in front of the whole school to recite the Scottish poems that we have been learning.

On Thursday, we listened to the story called ‘The disgusting Sandwich’ and thought about when we have felt the emotion disgusted!

‘I feel disgusting when I eat Mayo’ Kayla

We also made super disgusted faces out of paper!

Super work Primary One!!!!
