Last week in P1b……..

P1b were very busy last week and enjoyed lots of different activities including a judo taster session!  There were some good judo moves and lots of perseverance to not allow their partner to win!

We also reinforced our days of the week in maths and are getting really good at this.  We made door hangers to help us track the day of the week at home!

Fun in the Sun!

Primary 1b have been working very hard over the past couple of weeks.  In maths, we have been practising counting in twos and are getting better at this.  Mrs Smail took us outside in small groups to practise jumping in twos along the number line.  She was very impressed with our counting!

On Wednesday this week we enjoyed our sports day.  The weather was very kind to us and we loved having all the parents there to watch us and cheer us on.

Now we are working hard on learning our lines for our assembly next week.  We look forward to presenting this to the nursery children who will be coming into P1 on Wednesday and also to our own parents on Friday.  We very much look forward to seeing you there!

Successful Learners in P1b

Another busy week in P1b where we have been practising our growth mindset and learning to persevere and not give up when things get a little bit tricky!

In our non-number maths we learned about weighing objects using balance scales and were good at predicting which items would be the heaviest.

As part of our topic and technology work, we used our findings from last weeks science lessons to work with a partner to design and build a raft to rescue Captain Blackbeard.  We are going to test these out in the water to see which ones will float and be able to save the pirate!

We have also been using our number lines to practise our addition and subtraction skills and enjoyed jumping along the numberline to work out the answers!

Hard Workers in P1b

Another fun-filled week in Primary 1!

This week started off with our interval training challenge where a Commonwealth gymnastic came in and spoke to us all and we took part in a sponsored fitness challenge.  We all tried hard and found it very tiring!

Maths work this week focussed on subtraction.  We remembered that the biggest number always has to go first in a subtraction sum and that number lines are good for helping us to jump back and work out the answers!

The sunshine has made us all happy this week and we voted for an outdoor story in the sun.  We read ‘The Night Pirates’ and enjoyed the story very much!

Out topic work this week involved us in designing pirate treasure maps.  To help us do this we looked at some examples before working in small teams across Primary 1 to try out some ideas with chalks in the playground.  It was really fun!

In our Reading Routes groups we explored fiction and non-fiction texts and sorted out books under these two headings.  We had to work together in our groups to do this and looked for clues in the books to help us decide which was which!

Finally, we enjoyed our structured play this time when we worked in carousel groups to role-play being pirates and to explore different materials to see if they float or sink.  We needed to do this as we have received a letter from Captain Blackbeard who is stuck on a desert island and he has asked us to help him build a raft to help him.  We are going to work with a partner next week to plan and build our rafts.  We wrote to Captain Blackbeard to let him know that we will help him.  We are going to contact him via a letter in a bottle!

Mathematicians in P1b

Today in maths P1b put their memories to the test and were revising lots of maths concepts that we have already learned about in P1.  We remembered the names of 2D and 3D shapes, we worked on sorting and identifying coins to £2 and we measured pictures of objects carefully using paper clips. We also revised our adding, time telling and pattern work on the iPads.  It was hard work!

As well as all that – we learned something new too!  We worked on the mathematical symbols for greater than > and less than < and compared different numbers to place the greater than and less than symbols correctly.  We are getting really good at it already!

Another Busy Week in P1b

This week started off with some group work in our reading routes groups.  The boys and girls had to work together to think of adjectives to describe different objects.  They thought hard to think of really interesting words then chose their best word to share with the class.  Lots of impressive WOW words were shared – well done everyone!

In maths this week we have been reinforcing our addition to 10 and have been working on improving our quick recall of pairs of numbers which add to make 10.  We played addition board games and used the iPads to help us practise this.  We have also been working on some addition colour by number pictures.  Mrs Lloyd thinks we are getting really good at this!

We have also been working on numbers up to 20 and have practised making and recording the numerals as well as counting out the right number of objects.

In the structured play area we had great fun using our imaginations and dressing up as pirates.  We also completed some pirate jigsaws, built pirate ships from lego and played with the small world pirate ships.  It was brilliant fun!

P1 Pirates

This week we have started our new topic – ‘Pirates’.  The boys and girls found a treasure chest in the playground last week and this week they also found a pirate hat and sword so now we know the treasure chest was definitely left by pirates.  We have started to think about what we know already and what we would like to find out about pirates.

P1b used their ICT skills in Clicker 6 this week to take their own photographs and to use the painting tools to make themselves look like pirates.  Be warned – some of these pirates look a bit scary!!!!

Lots of pirate fun was had in the structured play area too.  Some of the children enjoyed pirate jigsaws, others played with the pirate ships and a few people took on the maths challenge of ordering pirate pictures in size order.  Well done!

Mrs Smail has been working very hard on turning the role-play area into our pirate ship.  It looks fab and we can’t wait to use it next week.  Thank you so much.

P1 Superstars

Another busy week in Primary 1!  This week we have been revising our number stories to 10 in a variety of different ways.  We made paper chains, we coloured in ten frames and wrote down the different sums we made and we coloured in rainbows to help us link up the facts.  We are getting much better at pairing up numbers that add together to make 10.

We have also been practising our numbers to 20 and have been writing the numerals and counting objects accurately up to 20.

During our library time this week the boys and girls worked hard to use their reading skills to sound out some words in their books.

Olivia really impressed Mrs Lloyd when she found an Oxford Reading Tree book and sounded out almost all of the words perfectly.  She then even offered to help Nathan C when he had a go at reading it.  Nathan also did very well!  Thank you to Mrs Little who has very kindly displayed our Cat in the Hat rhyming art work in the library.  Doesn’t it look good?!

We have been working on becoming healthier and have started to walk a mile a couple of times a week.  Everyone has managed to walk the full distance and showed good stamina. Well done!

This morning we had a special visitor in class as Abi and her mum brought in baby Lawson.  He was so well behaved and the boys and girls were being very quiet and gentle with him.  Thank you for bringing him in to meet us all.  We all thought he was so cute.

P1b have been busy bees during Eco Week!

This week P1b have enjoyed working hard on all things eco!  We started off the week producing print outs of planet earth which we later decorated to make eco posters.

We also went on a wildlife hunt in the playground to get some ideas for the wildlife art competition.  We thought up lots of ideas and produced some super detailed drawings for the competition.

On Tuesday, we took part in another competition to design a new reusable bag for Asda.  We looked at some of Mrs Lloyd’s reusable bags to get some ideas and produced some fantastic designs.

On Wednesday ‘Bag Girl’ a recycling superhero visited Bankton to ask for some recycling help.  She taught the children all about the 3 R’s – reduce, reuse and recycle – and the boys and girls helped her to fight off a nasty garbage monster.  The children also successfully sorted a big pile of rubbish into metal, plastic and paper.  Well done boys and girls!

We also learned about different food groups this week and used this to help us design a healthy packed lunchbox.  We learned that protein helps us to grow, carbohydrates give us energy and vitamins and minerals from fruit and vegetables help us to fight off illnesses.

Well done boys and girls!
