Primary 2 love dinosaurs!

P2 were very excited to find out that our term 3 topic is dinosaurs! We wrote down all of the facts that we already knew about dinosaurs and then decided what we would like to find out about dinosaurs throughout the topic. We created a new dinosaur called Barney on the laptop and started to explore facts about dinosaurs in different parts of the world.

What did we learn this week?

Kiernan: ‘Dinosaurs run very fast’.

Niamh: ‘Some dinosaurs walk on 4 legs and some can walk on 2 legs’.

Tiegan: ‘Some dinosaurs have massive tails’.

Daniel T: ‘I learnt that a verb is a doing word’

Kieran: ‘I learnt to spell ‘ea’ words like ‘tea’, ‘pea’ and ‘scream’.

Maya: ‘I learnt that 5-2=3. Subtracting is fun.’

Leo: ‘I learnt that when you subtract you need to work out the difference between the two numbers’.

Well done to Matthew Watkins who is the P2 star of the week.

Well done to the class dojo champion Kieran Mackie.

Busy start to 2016

P2 had a very relaxing Christmas holiday and are glad to be back at school.

  • We wrote our New Year’s resolutions and made sure we all had the capital letters and full stops in the right place.
  • In maths, we learnt how to take away small numbers from bigger numbers using cubes and sweets.
  • Sachin and Jack learnt how to draw facial features by carefully considering the proportions.
  • Ryan learnt that one type of dinosaur had a head that was the size of a modern car!
  • Daniel learnt to spell ‘beavers’ when writing about his beavers club.

This week in P2, we began making our Christmas enterprise products. We had a lot of fun working together in our learning teams. We each have a different elf job in our team.

In class we wrote a description of how to make a christmas mouse. We were learning to use the words ‘first, next, then and finally’ to carefully explain each step.

Niamh enjoyed learning to count to 10 in Mandarin and Ayla learnt the hand signals for Mandarin numbers.

Sachin enjoyed playing cat and mouse in P.E.

Sandee enjoyed making the scrabble craft for our enterprise project.

A lot of children in P2 have tried really hard to be kind friends in the playground this week. Keep up the good work!

Well done to the class dojo champion, Andrew Meechan!

P2’s busy week

We started our new Christmas Enterprise topic this week. We voted on which products we would like to make and chose a name for our workshop.

We went outside for P.E with P2/3 and had a great time practising our jumping and balancing skills.

A lady from the SSPCA spoke to us about animals and let us try on some safety clothes. We got to test the equipment that is used to help rescue animals.

Kieran: ‘I liked trying on the climbing suit’.

Sarah: ‘I liked when the lady got the puppet out and Cole used the equipment to catch the badger puppet’.

Matthew: ‘ I liked when the lady was talking about different kinds of snakes’.

What have I learned this week?….

Cameron A: ‘ This week I learned how to spell ‘wh’ words like ‘whale’ and ‘wheel’.

Daniel T: ‘I learned how to paint a cherry blossom tree’.

Ayla: ‘I learned about the 4 different seasons: summer, winter, spring and autumn’.

Our week in P2

This week we have been learning about 3D shapes and went on a 3D shape hunt around the school playground.

Niamh: ‘I learnt what a pyramid is.’

Jack: ‘ I found a stone in the shape of a cone.’

Kiernan: ‘ I found a cone on top of the pencil bin.’

Ask your child to spot 3D shapes when they are out and about this weekend.

For bonfire night we wrote a fireworks poem, designed our own fireworks and learned how to keep ourselves safe at a firework display.

Ayla: ‘We learnt to stay away from fires when wearing a baggy jumper’.

We used super wow words to describe fireworks such as: whizzing, brightly coloured, popping and exploding.

Well done to Ryan Brodie who won the class prize today!

A busy week in P2

This week P2 learned how to say hello and goodbye in mandarin. We also looked at chinese paper art and got to try on chinese masks.

We enjoyed the Robin Hood pantomime on Thursday and wrote about our favourite part:

Matthew: ‘My favourite part was when Robin Hood and Maid Marion kissed’.

Daniel T: ‘My favourite song in the panto was “Cheerleader” and “Bills”.

Cameron A: ‘I liked when the minion popped up’.

Many of the children enjoyed the Halloween party last night and I saw a lot of amazing costumes! The highlights for P2 were the decorations, flashing lights and the 4 corners game.

In maths we have been using our bunny ears with numbers to 10. The children enjoyed playing around the world and some of them managed to travel as far as 13 spaces in the game! Ask your child how to play the game at home with number bonds to 10 and 20.

This week Corey Smith was awarded the star of the week from P2 for his super writing about Robin Hood. Image result for star

The class dojo champion is Ayla who earned 116 dojos this week. Well done!

P2’s adventure

On Thursday P2, P2/3 and P3 went on a very exciting trip to Inchcolm Island. We went on a bus and a ferry to get there.

We discovered a secret trap door on the floor of the ferry. This morning the P2s imagined what was beneath the trap door:

Sachin: ‘I think that there was a pirate behind the door guarding a treasure chest’.

Jack: ‘I think that it was a door to a mega shark tank’.

Aiyasha: ‘I think that it was a magic door. Inside the magic door there is a magic box with a magic wand in it.

Baillie: ‘I think that it was a door to SpongeBob’s house’.

Maya: ‘I think that it was a secret entrance’.

After climbing off the ferry, we went on an adventure walk around the island and explored the abbey. We had fun watching two seals playing in the water together while we ate our lunch on the beach. The children enjoyed collecting shells and Kieran even found a crab’s claw!

Leo: ‘My favourite part was finding the trap door’.

Jodie: ‘My favourite part was going on the boat’.

Daniel C: ‘I liked being at the seaside and eating lunch on the beach’.

Matthew: ‘I learned how waves work. If the boat goes fast, it makes bigger waves’.

Ayla: ‘I learned that a baby seal is called a pup’.

Our learning in class:

In P2, we have been learning about nouns. We know that nouns are naming words and we wrote a list of all of the nouns we could think of. We are beginning to understand the difference between proper and common nouns.

In maths, we have been adding numbers together and learning about odd and even numbers.

Alex: ‘I learned how to make another number by adding two numbers together’.

Maya: ‘I learned that 4+4 makes 8 on the fish tank game’.

Niamh: ‘I worked with the 10 frame to add numbers to 10’.

Ryan: ‘I learned to add and take away numbers to 6 and 7’.

Well done to Sarah Foster who won the class prize for excellent behaviour this week!

Lots of learning in P2

This week P2 have been learning how to spell ‘qu’ words. Some of the words that we have learned are:

  • quick
  • quiet
  • queen
  • quit
  • quack

Matthew: ‘I learned how to do the Jolly Grammar action for qu‘ (which is to make a beak with your hands like a duck quacking).

Ayla: ‘I liked helping Geraldine the Giraffe find lots of qu words’.

Kiernan: ‘I learned how to spell the word queen’.

Andrew: ‘I really liked watching the qu video on alphablocks’.

During science the children learned all about day and night through a torch and globe experiment. We looked at different nocturnal animals and wondered if there were any of these animals living in our own gardens!

Today P2 worked very hard and had lots of fun during our maths open morning. The children were developing their ordering, counting and adding skills within numeracy through practical activities.

Izaak: ‘I learned how to put all of the numbers in order on the computer game’.

Nicole: ‘I learned how to make a black and white pattern’.

Kieran: ‘I have been learning how to count t0 100 all week’.

Thank you to everyone who came to P2 during the open morning. It was great to see so many of you there to support your child.

This week Kiernan Hunter won the class prize for earning so many dojo points this week. Well done Kiernan!
