Numeracy and Maths

Key Teaching Information

Capacity is the maximum amount a container can hold. The volume of an object is the amount of three-dimensional space that it takes up. The capacity of a carton might be 1 litre but if some of the juice has been poured out it might actually contain only 500 ml. When a container is full the volume and capacity are the same. This learning outcome concerns the capacity.

Primary 5

Learning Intention: I can measure volume in millilitres (ml)  and litres (l)

Use the power-point to teach you more about reading scales.  Take your time and work through the examples on the power-point this will help you with the assessment activity below.

Hint: When reading scales it is important to work out what the interval is in the scale. The scales on measuring jugs change and intervals can be 10ml, 20ml, 30ml etc. Also remember from previous lessons last week there are 1000 ml in 1 litre!

When you have completed the power-point try the assessment ‘Vertical format- Measuring in Millilitres and Litres’ and Volume Activity Sheet

Health and Well Being

This week we are going to learn about the different types of breakfast people eat around the world. Mrs Manning had no idea what some of the foods were and had to google search so you could do the same! Click on the link below and complete the task I hope you enjoy it and learn a lot!

Learning Focus:

  • Know that it is important to eat breakfast every day.
  • Know that food and drinks provide energy.
  • Know that they need different amounts from each food group

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. This is because your body has been
fasted all night and needs food and drink to give it the energy it needs to function such as going to school, concentrating, working hard and playing at break time. Without breakfast the body can’t do all the things it needs to do as well as it would if you’d had breakfast. Click on link below to remind yourself of the eatwell guide.

Now click on the link below and complete the activity. You can show what your favourite healthy breakfast is by drawing it on a plate…you choose how you display the information!

Extension Task: Why not keep a diary for the week on what you eat and what you do? Click on link below .
