Shape Sort

Over the past few weeks, Room 6 have been learning to recognise 2D shapes and their properties. We have completed a variety of different activities and games to develop our knowledge of different shapes and ways in which we can identify these. We discussed where these shapes can be seen in everyday items and objects before going on a shape hunt around the school to see if we could spot any. We also played a game where shapes would be removed from the board, and we had to guess which ones were missing.

On Friday, we had fun working in teams to complete a shape sorting challenge. We had to organise the shapes into two different hoops depending on what properties they had. For example, we started by sorting the shapes into ‘four sides and less’ or ‘more than four sides’. We then did a similar challenge identifying if there were ‘four corners or less’ or ‘more than four corners’. Lastly, we took on an extra challenge involving sorting the shapes into ‘sides the same length’ and ‘sides different lengths’. We enjoyed working collaboratively to try and organise these shapes correctly.

As mentioned previously on the blog, we had a fantastic time creating items for our post office role play area before the September break as part of our topic. We worked together to paint a post box, post office sign, post van and post man to decorate our post office. We also started to collect items for this area to be used properly, such as stamps, string, envelopes and paper. We can’t wait to get started and have really been enjoying our ‘Katie Morag’ topic so far.

We will keep you updated with how our post office is coming along soon!
