Home Learning Activities – Week 2

Hi everyone!

This week in the Beech class, our mini-topic is based on the Julia Donaldson book ‘The Smeds and the Smoos’. Here is a link to the story if you would like to listen! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKjjFh7dQsg I have thought of some space and alien themed activities for you to take part in at home that link nicely to our story – remember to only do what you can  😊

Literacy

We sometimes remember the names and order of the planets in our solar system with a helpful mnemonic such as: ‘My Very Evil Monster Just Scared Us Nuts’ The first letter of each word reminds us of each planet name.  Your challenge is to order the planets using objects you can find around the house that begin with the same letter sound.  (You can include dwarf planet, Pluto, if you wish!)

Find something that begins with M, V, E, M, J, U, N and P.  Can you put them in that order?

Numeracy

Twinkl have a wide variety of free games.  I have linked 3 Space-themed  interactive number games

Type the following into your web browser: Twinkl.co.uk/share

Use the code LW4518 to access the games in the ‘lesson 18.1.21’ section.

Health and Wellbeing

Practise cutting skills and healthy eating with this interesting activity.  Use different sized fruits to identify and compare the sizes of each planet!  If you can get to a supermarket, try using fruits you may not always have at home and experiment with different flavours.  With any left over pieces, why not create a fruit rocket?

Science, Engineering and Technology

Have fun with any boxes, recycled cartons or bottles, toilet roll holders, Tupperware and tables or  chairs – anything you can find – to see if you can build your very own rocket ship!

Here is an example:

Explore the moon with this animated story by Eric Carle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGqAw7UM6qo

Why does the moon have craters on it?  Craters on the Moon are caused by asteroids and meteorites colliding with the moon’s surface over millions of years.  Explore this concept using a mixture of cornflour and baby oil to represent the moon surface and pebbles/stones to represent the meteors.  Here are the instructions for you to follow: Science Experiment

Addition activities and resources available

Home Learning Activities – Week 2

Good Morning Sunflowers!

Below are four activities which you can try at home this week.

Literacy – Dinosaur Roar!

I know how much you love dinosaur’s in class. Listen to the Makaton story below.  Can you copy the sign for dinosaur and can you make the same sounds as the dinosaur in the story? When you are all done, I want you to try and think of other words that begin with the sound ‘d’. Can you spot them around the house?

Numeracy – Shapes

This week on Vscene, we have been practicing making shapes in the air with our fingers.  Listen to the shape song below by the Singing Walrus and join in by guessing the shapes and tracing them with your finger. Name the shapes if you can.

Health and Wellbeing –  Star Jump Challenge

At school, we love to dance to actions song and we also do a lot of exercise in the playground.  Join in with the star jump dance and see how many star jumps you can do.

Science – Rainbow Experiment

Using Skittles and warm water, can you make a rainbow?  Place the skittles around the plate to make a multicoloured circle.  Add the water to the centre and watch as the colours form a rainbow.  Can you name and point to the colours that you see?

Sungazers Home Learning Week 2

Hello! We hope you all enjoyed the activities provided for week 1 of home learning and managed to try some of them out.

This week, we have some new activities for you to try based on our new class theme ‘The Glasgow Gruffalo’.  We are very familiar with both ‘The Gruffalo’ story and also ‘The Grufflo’s Child’ in the Sungazers class, so thought it would be good to explore the Scottish version for our Scottish theme.  Hope you enjoy it!

Literacy – Here is Elaine C Smith reading ‘The Glasgow Gruffalo’ story for you to enjoy.  Can you hear that some of the animal names and words sound different in this story? A mouse is a moose and a house is a hoose.  Have a listen and enjoy.

Numeracy – One More or One Less.  Use your number line in your maths activity pack or pause this video, find the number and add on more more or take one away (one less).  Can you find the correct answer?

Science – Experimenting with Ice

We have previously enjoyed experimenting with ice in the Sungazers Class.  We know we can make ice by freezing water. One of our favourite activities was filling up plastic gloves or balloons with water and small plastic toys.  We then put them in the freezer.   You could try this again at home! How long did it take to melt and free the toys?

New activity – Can you build an ice cube tower? Using ice cubes try and see if you can stack them on top of one another.  Does it work or is it too slippery? Now try adding some salt between each ice cube – the salt works as a kind of glue.  How many can you stack now?

Health and Wellbeing – Hope you enjoy this song about washing our hands

Snowdrops’ Home Learning Activities

Good morning Snowdrops!

Mrs Smith and Mrs Brown hope you are safe and well.

Parents/carers: as before, there are 4 areas of learning activities for you to do. Please do what you can and if you’d like to take a photo of what you have been doing, feel free but definitely not a requirement. You can send your photos to kathleen.smith2@eastayrshire.org.uk

Literacy

Fine motor and writing activities:

• Some of the Snowdrops are learning to write their own names. Here’s a fun writing activity to do on a tablet. Which letters do you need for your name? Can you write them on your tablet?

Squiggling letters game (handheld device only)-
https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/games/get-squiggling-letters-mobile

•Play dough activity: You might have shop bought dough at home, but if not you and your parent/carer could make some together. Kneading the dough will be great for hand and finger strength. Please see the recipe below if you decide to make your own.
Roll out dough and cut different shapes with cookie cutters or play dough shapes you might already have. You could also make long worm shapes and then cut them up into smaller pieces. You can also squeeze and roll the dough and make marks with your fingertips. Hand over hand from a parent/carer can help too.

Recipe suggestion: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/playdough-recipe

Numeracy

The Snowdrops love Numberblocks.  Here’s a wee activity to help recognise and count numbers to 5. If you want to try the activities to 10, feel free. Parents/carers can help if need be with hand over hand.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/games/numberblocks-make-and-play

Can you say or point to the numbers as they appear on screen?

Health & Wellbeing

This week, I encourage you to go for a local walk with someone from home. Before you go on your walk decide on an object/animal you are going to spot. For example: Can you spot a bird? Can you point to the bird? Can you hear it tweet or see it fly? Can you count all the birds you spot?

Or you might decide that you are going to try and spot objects that are blue. How many do you see? What kind of objects did you spot?

Have fun and remember to look and listen too!

Science/Music

Let’s make some sound jars!

Throughout the week, you could collect containers and their lids from dinners e.g. jars, takeaway tubs, tins, plastic bottles, etc.

Fill each container with different items you have in the house: pasta, rice, lentils/pulses, buttons, beads, corks, money, etc. Encourage your child to help you decide which same items go in which containers and help you to fill the containers, so they use many of their senses in this activity.

For example, one jar could have buttons in it, another could have rice and another could have lego bricks.

Questions to ask:
Which items make the loudest sound?
Which one makes the softest/most quiet sound?
Did you think of any things that were too big for the containers?

Have a shake and make some music!

Have fun!
