September 1958 – September 2018In September 1958 children first came to Onthank however our school wasn’t officially opened until 1959.
We started the celebrations at our McMillan coffee morning today. Thanks to Heather who made our cake and Mrs Findlay who displayed old photos. We are looking to create a website with photos and stories from the past 60 years. If you have any photos or stories to share please send them to

This week as part of our Knights and Castles topic P5B have been focussing on knights. Today we looked at what a knight wears. Lily, Alex, Sophie, Logan, Oliver and Callum trialled out wearing ‘armour’. The children had the opportunity to see what knights armour looks like through a woollen vest. As you can see the children who tried the vests on were very excited about this idea; particularly Logan and Callum!
Primary 6 will be working with two Dean Castle Rangers on Tuesday 2nd October and Tuesday 23rd October. In these sessions, the children will participate in tree identification and den building activities at the Foxes area near the school. These activities link into our John Muir Award and the Wilderness Wars novel that we are currently reading in class.
Parents, carers and grandparents are welcome to join us on these sessions. If you can come along then please complete the form below.
Children should wear outdoor clothing to school on these days but have their school uniform in their school bags to change into afterwards. Wellies/boots should be worn also. Spare socks are always a great idea!

Just to let you know, P2 pupils were (or will be) issued with a reading book for homework. They should read, discuss, hunt the word, sound out words etc over the week. This will be issued every Tuesday.
There are a few games and books under each child’s Bug Club account which hopefully they will be able to access too.
Reading books and any other homework issued should be returned each Monday.

This year’s performance will be on Tuesday the 9th of October at 10am. However, we would love to welcome you from 9:30 for refreshments as you anticipate the event of the year.

We will be supporting the STV Children’s Appeal this year.
The STV Children’s Appeal is committed to helping children and young people in Scotland affected by poverty.
The money raised by the appeal helps make a real difference by providing food, warm clothing, opportunity for employment and enabling support for those who need it most.
In partnership with ‘BlueStar Productions’ we will be having an ‘Onthank Danceathon’ on Friday 5th October 2018.
Pupils are invited to wear sporty clothes (no football colours), bring a donation and join in the dancing fun!

Primary 5 homework this week consists of ‘dge’ words. Children received a homework grid and should complete Task A – write out your words three times, followed by Task B – Consonants and Vowels.
This is the spelling grid children have received.
Children should also log into their Heinemann Active Maths account using their Bug Club log in and play the maths game allocated to them by their class teacher.
If you have any questions about this week’s homework then please let your Class Teacher know.

For P7 Athletics Team Members Only
The Athletics Final takes place at the Athletics Arena, Friday 28th September. The children have to arrive at the arena at 6pm sharp and the competition should run from 6.30-8.30pm.
The children should wear black or dark coloured shorts/leggings and their athletics t-shirt. The children should also bring water and healthy snack. Warm clothing is also encouraged as the arena can be cold at this time of year.
Parents are welcome to attend this event to cheer the team on! Seating is roughly calculated at one adult per child but if two adults attend or brothers and sisters need to come for childcare purposes I’m sure it’ll be ok.

Thank you to everyone for their effort put into our litter pick . Thankfully we did not collect a huge amount of litter. Thank you to Nutz, parents/carers and volunteers from Webhelp who came to help.
WOW! A whole school extravaganza in yellow. Children went NUTS for litter picking! Here are P5i with their P2S buddies doing their bit for the environment. Well done everyone and to P5i for being so supportive of the wee ones. Great examples of role models and responsible citizens.

Macmillan Coffee Morning – Friday 28 September
As part of our Enterprise topic P6s will be organising our coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer Support on Friday 28 September from 9.05 am – 12.05 pm in the main hall. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, juice and baking will be available for a donation. P4, P5, P6 and P7 pupils can attend for 60p. Please come along and support this worthwhile cause. All proceeds will go to Macmillan Cancer Support. On this occasion money can be brought to school. Timetable below if you want to visit when your child’s class is visiting/helping.

P4 are going to design and create an iconic American city. At home we would like to challenge the Primary 4 pupils to construct a building using junk materials such as Pringle tubes, cereal and shoe boxes. Once the models are completed and returned to school, on Friday 5th October, we will be assembling an authentic city skyline.

Parent Council held their AGM on Monday 17 September. Denise McMillan was elected as Chairperson and Mharai Mayes is the new Secretary.

Pupils in P3W enjoyed Roald Dahl Day 2018. Roald Dahl has been our “Author in the Spotlight” this term.
We have read ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ and we created our own magic medicine.
Pupils brought in their favourite Roald Dahl books, we participated in some mindfulness related to ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and Owen took on the role of Willy Wonka. We also answered Maths problems related to many of the characters in Roald Dahl’s famous books.
At the end of the day the pupils took home a bookmark to use in their own books when reading for enjoyment.
We will have a vote to see who our next “Author in the Spotlight” is.
