Alistair and Charlie both competed in a taekwondo competition at the weekend and were successful winners. Alistair won a bronze medal and Charlie won silver. Well done , we are all proud of you.

P5 Human Body topic – Community Involvement
P5’s current topic is the Human Body. We are hoping that some wonderful people in our community, whose work relates to biology or medicine, could join us to discuss their job and experience.
For example, in the past we have had a microbiologist educate us in their job and they brought in some fascinating, if a little disgusting, samples to help pupils learn more about their body’s defence system.
If you are able to spare your time please fill in the form attached and we will be in touch to find out more about your experience and how it could be incorporated into our topic.
Involving members of the community whose daily job is related to any of the STEM areas helps pupils understand the link between these subjects and the real world and may inspire future careers.

P5 need your help!
P5 will be participating in various STEM related activities this term. Next week’s challenge will require pupils to use a 500 ml plastic bottle that has a screw top lid. Since all the P5 classes are taking part we will need quite a lot so it would great if pupils could bring a bottle with them next week. We will also be helping the environment because we are re-using the bottles!

P5 and the Scottish Opera Perform!
Primary 5 will have the fantastic opportunity to work with Scottish Opera and put on a performance in May. The children will work with members of Scottish Opera on Friday 10th of May and then again on Friday 17th May.
On Friday 17th May families of P5 pupils are invited to come and watch the performance which starts sharp at 2.15pm in the assembly hall. Tea and coffee will be available from 1.45pm.
Primary 5 would love it if you could come see them perform.

P5E Decades show costume update
P5E had a run through of the show with their fellow P5 classes today and following this rehearsal we discussed costume ideas. As I posted before most pupils are playing children and therefore these pupils can wear casual clothes. Our scientists are going to wear a white polo shirt with dark trousers and the head scientist a red polo shirt.
There is a post on the Onthank P5 page that shows some clothing trends from the 2000s decade so if you are able to achieve any of these looks then that would be great but not essential.
There will be a dress rehearsal on Tuesday 30th April so pupils are to bring in their costumes for this day (in a bag and labelled). The costumes can then be left in the classroom ready for Wednesday (show day!).
In the meantime if your child has any lines please ensure they practise them to the point where they can say them without needing a script, unless they are a narrator.

P5E Decades show information
As parents/carers of P5E will know the class are performing short sketches relating to the changes in technology during the 2000s. In terms of costumes most pupils are playing children and therefore do not need anything special. However, I have posted some pictures of so called noughties clothing ‘trends’ on our Onthank P5 blog, please have a look and if you are able to provide these clothes or something similar that would be great. Anything you send in should be labelled with your child’s name and class.

P5E Christmas Fayre reminder
Just a wee reminder that all P5 classes will be visiting the fayre at 10.15am tomorrow. Pupils should bring money in a purse or money bag and a plastic carrier bag to hold the items they buy.
P5E have been working hard getting their clay pinch pots ready. They can be bought for £1 and decorated for free using sparkly gems at the stall.
Anna Ellis has also kindly donated some knitted items such as sparkly cushions £5, baby/lap blankets £4, retro ties/belts £2 and knitted balls: large £1, small 50p.

P5E 2D shape active maths -tiling and tangrams
Today P5E were continuing to explore 2D shapes. We took part in 3 stations. These 2 stations focused on tiling or tesselation using 2 D shapes:
This station focused on the Ancient Chinese tangram puzzles where the same 7 2D shapes are used to create different pictures:
The class really enjoyed these activities and said they would like to do them again.

P5 E have been exploring the properties of 2D shapes.
Pupils are being encouraged to look for right angles and tiling in the real world – please encourage your child to spot these at home and when you are out and about.
Pupils can share with the class what they have seen by talking about it (you could make a list), taking pictures to show us (you can bring in a pen drive, upload on to your own e-portfolio, print it out) or maybe even illustrate/draw it.

P5 trip to Dick Institute
Reminder that all of P5 will be visiting the Dick Institute for the Imprint book festival on Wednesday 21st November.
Update on information- the workshop involves meeting an author, David MacPhail, who will discuss his work and how he develops his ideas.
P5I and P5E – coach leaves at 10.30 am and arrives back around 12.30 ish (pupils will have an early playtime in school)
P5M and P5B – coach leaves 1pm and arrives back before 3pm (pupils will have an early lunch at 12noon in school). This workshop is run by the Dick Institute but will take place in the Palace Theatre due to a clash in bookings.
There is no cost for the trip. No new consent forms were given out for this trip as it was covered in the annual consent form (a blue colour) given out and returned at the beginning of term 1.

All primary 5 classes will be visiting the Dick Institute on Wednesday 21st November. It is part of the Imprint book festival and pupils will be attending a workshop in the library:

Pupils will be travelling by coach. There is no cost for this trip. Pupils will be in school as normal for their break and lunch.

Remembrance Medals P5E
P5E were learning about the importance of Remembrance Day 2018 and designed medals in honour of those who fought in the war. They all made a super effort and created lovely designs. Miss Ellis was delighted with their hard work and creativity.
Dramatic drama in P5E
Mr McIlwraith and Steven Swan led a drama activity with our class today. Pupils were acting out a scene from the film Snow White. They had to think about using their voices, facial expressions, body movement and props effectively. The pupils had a great time. There were some Oscar winning performances!

P5E made a super effort with their topic homework this term and brought in a variety of work that showed their knowledge of Knights and Castles. Thank you to anyone at home who helped and it would seem the children enjoyed the experience. More pictures will be added if any pupils have yet to bring in their work.
P5 E Trip to Dundonald Castle
P5E visited Dundonald Castle today to further their knowledge of medieval times.
We got to see and try different types of armour, experience the skill of falconry and tour the castle. Our day ended with a pretend battle involving foam swords.
It was great.

Primary 5 school trip
As part of our Knights and Castles topic Primary 5 classes will be visiting Dundonald Castle. Each class will be going on a different day:
P5E Tuesday 2nd October

P5M Thursday 11th October
The cost of the trip is £5 per pupil. Parent Pay for this trip will be set up on Tuesday 25th September.
Pupils will need a packed lunch (free school meals will be entitled to a free packed lunch).
Please consider the weather – pupils may need to wrap up as part of the day requires being outside.
If you can help out on the trip please let your class teacher know as we may require helpers.

Primary 5 – Homework Information
As part of Maths Week all Primary 5 pupils have been assigned some Active Maths games. These games aim to reinforce pupils’ knowledge of whole numbers and rounding to 10 and 100. Please use your Bug Club login details to access these games.
For spelling pupils have once again been given a sheet where the focus is 3 phonemes that we have been exploring in class. New this week – Chilli Challenge! Pick the follow up task you think you can handle. Complete this challenge in your new homework jotter.
All work is to be completed and handed in on Friday.

P5E scavenger hunt
Primary 5 are exploring the features of non-fiction texts this term.
P5E were showing that they could identify these features during a fun scavenger hunt. They were to choose a non-fiction book and stick a post it note next to the feature they found. Some groups were very quick demonstrating excellent knowledge of non-fiction text features.
P5E World Cup Countries Research
This term Primary 5E have been using their ICT skills to research information on countries participating in the World Cup.
They had to find out lots of facts, locate their country on a world map and accurately copy down the country’s flag.
Then pupils were asked to create a bigger design of their flag using paint.
Miss Ellis was so impressed with their fantastic art work that she asked pupils if the flags could be used on the Girl Guiding float that was entering the Stewarton Bonnet Guild gala day parade last weekend. This meant hundreds of people got to see their excellent work.
All the Stewarton Brownie and Guide leaders would like to thank P5E for allowing us to use their flags.
